  • Want a clone of your Nissan key but don’t want to pay the dealer a king’s ransom? Check out how I made a clone of my Nissan Micra’s key for less than the cost of one of those lame buttonless keys from a big box store. Warning: some filing required.

    This video speaks volumes.
30 years ago Nissan had a high reputation for reliability, ease of maintenance and good design and was much admired in the UK, where it had a couple of large factories.
With the introduction of "keyless entry" on the K12 Micra and other cars complications started to show up and the 'NATS' ant-theft system proved to be prone to intermittent malfunctions which frequently switched off the engine even though keys were genuine and owners could prove their ownership to main dealerships.
These issues first began around 20 years ago and many Nissan owners in Japan had their NATS disabled when warranty expiry was near. This happened far less in Europe and it tended to be Nissan Europe cars which had the most troubles. Nissan UK factories assembled the cars from Japanese parts with most models and chose to simplify NATS and so-called 'self diagnostics'.
Keyless entry and ambitious anti-theft electronics were disliked by British customers.
The tale of Carlos Ghosn is well known and he was lauded in the early 2000s for saving Nissan from technical bankruptcy by forming a developing alliance with Renault (which is semi-nationalized), closing down many Japanese large plants and laying off thousands of highly skilled workers and, bit by bit, Nissan products became more Renault than Nissan. Renault had pioneered keyless entry but was less over-sophisticated in engine management systems.
By the 2010s the old standards of Datsun/Nissan had all but disappeared yet Nissan sold more units worldwide than did Renault. Mitsubishi was also in the 'Alliance' and its uneasy fortunes in N.America eventually led to it making few sales in the USA in recent years.
Mr Ghosn is a convicted felon in several countries but appears to jet all over the world.
Nissan has not been Japanese Nissan for decades and parts for all models are centered on the Netherlands, making them expensive beyond merit.
I still own a fairly old Nissan but keep it more out of sentiment than utility. One might reasonably conclude that the words Nissan, reliability, and helpful dealerships do not belong in the same sentence, paragraph or whole page.
