I'm grateful for those who allow for use to railfan days gone by! I don't have the time to get out and watch the trains in my area these days and I hardly ever get stopped by a train during my work traveling from one area to another.
My favorite scene was on board the cab unit going into what I'd guess, was Columbus Union Station. Love stuff like that, but seems little of it was ever filmed. Part of the reason might be that film was expensive back then and the scenes underneath the big terminals at the sheds and platforms were always dark. Therefore, the cinematographer thought it'd be a waste of tape.
The Penn Central's locomotive paint scheme was simple and straightforward, yet bad-ass looking and a better black scheme than NS. A clean Penn Central engine looked nice.
Great E8's pacing scene. That six-car Penn Central passenger train was flyin', so track was in good shape during this period. Penn Central had such horrid track conditions, they lost lots of business to The Erie Lackawanna.
Tommy the Columbus Div, at least afa the mainlines, were generally in decent shape this early into PC. In fact, portions of the former Big Four would get welded rail installed in 1971.
@@tommythomason6187 They probably were. Believe it or not, the cleanest PC diesel I ever saw was a freshly shopped former PRR F unit! Most were a filthy brownish color.
@7:34 is former PRR, E7A number 4244. summer of 1979 I found her dead in New Jersey awaiting the torch. Also there was 4224 and 4233. They were in south amboy and Elizabeth Port. All 3 were still in pure PC paint.
The track the pacing sequences taken around South Charleston is now a trail. Otherwise, most of this track is still there. One more that's gone is the Pennsy passenger main into Indianapolis.

that's one interesting looking diamond..... more little treasures. Keep it comin' !!!!
A nice look back at some interesting Penn Central trains. Thanks for posting!
Thanks for posting this! I was looking for video of an early Penn Central mail train and that second clip is exactly what I was searching for.
At 7:32 is E7A no. 4244.
The last 3 E7s on CR property were 4224,4233 and 4244.
I saw 4244 in New Jersey deadline in 1979, still in PC paint.
Ah. Penn central with high speed trains ! And that cab ride, wow ! Thanks for a fine video !
Man its getting so I'm living for your next vintage upload! 😀
Very awesome video! Thanks for sharing. I liked and subbed to your channel!😃👍
It would've definitely been great to have heard the diesels and locomotives.

It almost seems with this footage that very early on the management thought that Penn Central would turn out alright

As simple as simple gets! Bland Black with basic white lettering.
Fantastic!
Good stuff!
How fast would those mail trains run?
Funny how Columbus, Ohio is just south of where I live

@@b3j8 And sparkling, jet black diesels, at that. Not a bad paint scheme when you see a clean Penn Central engine.

wrong. the Track was very good on the X Nyc side. i love to rail fan Erie Lackawanna but most their track was bad.
Is some of this track now gone?
