It came out in japan later because this movie was produced by 4Kids. It was their idea and that is also the main reason why the writting was so bad. They just wanted to make a cash grab before DM ends
4kids very much wanted to milk the original Yugioh for every drop so they made their own projects like Pyramid of Light and Capsule monsters. Original cast is the most involved in filler adventures. I mean it was *very* popular so i can see why but...the duel writing just had a lot of issues. The 2 big problems were Pegasus using ultimate offering when he didn't need to because the toons he uses can be special summoned. The second is the biggest because Blue eyes shining dragon for some reason did *not* gain 300 from Paladin of white dragon in the graveyard despite it being a dragon. That one is crucial because Yugi would have lost if it gained 300 more attack because he had 200 lp left after Shining dragon attacked Sorcerer of dark magic, meaning he would have actually have lost as his lp would have gone past 0. The rest of the movie basically shouldn't happen because Kaiba already won. the artstyle was also so iffy and you can tell 4kids was trying to imitate the series artstyle the best they could. Despite this I still enjoyed the movie.
I feel like I'm the sole person who actually just genuinely loves this movie alot, and for the life of me my brain just never picks up on the flaws anyone talks about with it. (The Anubis design and backstory critiques are 100% true though.) But the end stretch of Yami summoning Blue Eyes Shining Dragon to when they defeat Anubis is forever iconic to me and it never fails to get me excited. It's honestly a 7/10 movie for me personally.
Naw I'm with you! While it's not perfect and I like the other 2 yugioh movies better, it's still a fun watch with animation that holds up to this day and pretty funny humor! Doesn't help that one of the first cards I pulled from a booster box was blue eyes shining dragon
Nah, I think this movie is good and actually better than Toei movie and BBT overall. However, it is true that it still mostly appeals to fans and has some noticable weaknesses regarding Anubis as a villain.
@lpfan4491 There's actually these dudes I saw watched this movie for the first time, and they were so lost. 1 of them only had very early Yu-Gi-Oh knowledge, while the other 2 were clueless. It was hilarious to watch.
Since this is the love thread I will queue in. I fondly remember the theater experience as a kid. I remember playing the heck out of the soundtrack. If you wanted me to go back and rewatch a Yu-Gi-Oh! movie, I would pick this one just for the popcorn enjoying fun time it would be. DSOD is too long and for all of the praise Dylan gives BBT, Paradox makes me annoyed and it does not feel like the protagonists are given enough to feel interesting in that movie.
My fav thing about Pyramid of Light is a misunderstanding I had with it as a child. There’s a scene in the movie where Joey and Tristan got transported inside Yugi’s puzzle and Joey says “Tristan I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore” and I had no idea what the Wizard of Oz was at that point in time so I just assumed Yugi and co lived in the state of Kansas
That line was referenced in GX after Jaden defeats Viper. I knew about the Wizard of Oz, but not that line. Thus, I thought Duel Academy was actually in Kansas.
The problem is everyone’s comparing the movie to the newer movies but this was the FIRST theatrical release of yugioh. And as a KID when this movie CAME OUT it was a 10/10 one of the coolest experiences I had when I was a kid. But people grow up and turn into movie critics instead of enjoying a certified classic.
What bugs me is when all the people were swarming Yugi demanding a duel for the god cards, instead of fleeing into the museum, Yugi should've dueled them. It could've been a montage of him dueling several of them. It would show that he deserves the cards. Or they could do a smash cut to Yugi walking away with twenty new cards in his hand.
@shangothunder1055 This is after battle city, so this would've been character development. Yugi, not Atem, dueling them, showing them and us his skill. Also, running into the museum won't change anything. They're just going to look for him tomorrow and after that because they want the God cards. Although they have better respect for Joey's skill now.
91% of people liked it on google, so there's a positive. I thought this movie was great for letting Kaiba get revenge on Pegasus after his humiliating defeat in Duelist Kingdom. Showing just how much better his deck had gotten. He didn't rely so heavily on Blue-Eyes this time which is what turned on him then.
Can't say I'm super fond of the movie, but for better or worse it played a role in my entrance to the franchise. What *IS* worth remembering about it is that Kaiba's hate boner for Yugi was genuinely the strongest it ever was, and Pegasus' sass was on a different level.
Dude Pegasus in the Dub was HILARIOUS, the movie definitely was funny in the Dub. Certainly one of the more goofier pieces of Yu-Gi-Oh Media that we have gotten
@@YugiohEverythingthe whole line of kaiba saying “what do you take me for some kind of rookie” and he promptly responds “well now you’re not quite that good yet Kaiba” lmao
I agree with your take on this movie. I enjoyed it for what it is worth but fails in comparison to the other Yugioh movies. Having it as the worst movie of all time though is a bit of a stretch imo
Bonds Beyond Time is the best Yu-Gi-Oh movie, I said it. The primary duel isn't dragged out or too insane, at least by yugioh standards. The villain is interesting, the actual layout of the duel, every turn is interesting, and it relates back to the plot of the anime pretty well.
I actually do like Pyramid of Light Better then the Capsule Monsters TV show At least Pyramid of Light felt more like a real Yugioh piece of media rather than a Pokémon/Digimon rip-off. The Only thing that I liked in Capsule Monsters was the Villain Alexander the Great (even though that his backstory made no sense) and Yugi's armour that he used to fuse his monsters like the anime version of the millennium world arc.
For a 25th anniversary, I think they should’ve given Studio Gallop one last hurrah to make a movie with all of their protags. I want to see Yuma and Yuya meet. Same with Yusei and Yusaku
@ 5:20 The fact that Seto’s pride demands he actually defeats the Egyptian Gods instead of, you know, circumvent their summoning…? And then he plays Pyramid of Light the Trap and it literally does the job FOR him!
Like you know it’s a movie that was to celebrate an anniversary. I feel you get what you paid for (in theatres). A fun time if you shut off your brain and just enjoy some good old fashioned Yugioh action/dueling. Hard to argue it was ever intended to be more then an one off
I'm from Russia and this movie is the only piece of Yu-gi-oh franchise we ever get officially dubbed. I watched the Duel Monsters in fandub and the other series with english sub, but I feel something special about this movie, despite its imperfections
I don’t really care too much about the movie being good or bad. It might nostalgia talking, but this was one of the very first instances where I got into the Yugioh franchise as I kid. I just think comparing to BBT and DSOD is a bit unfair since those two movies were made as the franchise and game has been evolving, where as POL mostly came out when the game was still in it's early days. The only thing I don’t agree with this video is Dylan basically calling the movie a "cash grab" when BBT is literally and basically just a glorified Yugioh fan's wet dream/fanfiction of seeing multiple protagonists coming together to defeat a main villain. And DSOB also suffers a bit because Aigami kinda falls into the same category as Anubis where "this is basically a new and original character that somewhat ties into the main plot but was never alluded to before and completely disappears when the movie ends". I just think Dylan is constantly keeps putting DM, GX, and 5DS on this pedestal of greatness when those 3 series themselves have their own issues.
Aigami does kind of fit in that category to I will admit I do agree maybe Dylan was being a bit harsh but hey it's his opinion I do agree with some of his points
I wouldn't say this movie is the worst piece of Yu-Gi-Oh media... It's the second. The first is it's light novel counterpart that I have no idea why it exists. At least with the movie you can turn your brain off and just enjoy the spectacle but when you're reading the exact same script and it's events are described to you it's so much worse because now you're FORCED to think about it
The only reason the sub exists in my opinion besides the exclusive OST for DM Sound Duel 4 is a throwaway line to the Light of Destruction that Anubis mentions in his exposition dump.
Also I do think the movie was never intended to be “analyzed” on why characters act in a certain way or duel poorly. This is still a Yugioh franchise after all where characters frequently act in not so clever or rational ways when they duel (they do tend to flex a lot-cough Kaiba cough)
Shoot. When you were talking about how there could've been more duels or different duels and showed Joey for a bit of it, I realized this could've been a way of showing the post-Battle City Yugi vs Joey. Not sure what they would've done with it, but yeah, that's something they could've done instead of Yugi vs Kaiba.
I love Pyramid of Light but I have a personal nipick about the main villain anubis preventing kaiba from defeating the pharaoh. they could have let kaiba defeat the pharaoh then anubis knocks out kaiba and we get a second duel. all they had to do was make the movie longer.
This movie was just alright for me. Definitely the worst of the 3 Yu-Gi-Oh movies, but still just ok for me, even after all these years, IMO. Also I’m just a few months older than this movie - My birthday was in May; I definitely feel old. This movie is the epitome of why I dislike Seto Kaiba. I don’t hate him, but after everything he’s been through, he is still just the same bitter rival since the first episode. He’s so stubborn and stuck in his ways throughout the show and it really gets on my nerves whenever its mentioned. I still enjoy every other aspect of him, but this part of him really pisses me off!
Kaiba so you choose to fight me with a cream puff and an elf? Then it's your funeral Another note from kaiba If you still think you can win you might want to change your toon Talking to pegasiss of corse
if you think about it it’s really weird that something as popular as Yu-Gi-Oh only has four animated movies while Pokémon has 23 or Detective Conan has 27
Honestly, Dillon. When you think about it that way, this movie is pretty much a cash grab. But continuity issues and poor villain with Anubis aside, I thought this film is very cheesy but weirdly charming to watch. It’s pretty much the Yu-Gi-Oh! equivalent to Digimon: The Movie, where it’s very cheesy and all over the place, but it’s still a fun nostalgic time capsule film.
This movie was pretty cool, in my opinion. The only thing that I don't like about the movie is Anubis, the main antagonist of Pyramid of Light. He doesn't do much anything until he interrupted Yugi and Kaiba's duel as he takes over it
For what it's worth, my pick for worst yugioh movie is Bonds Beyond Time. The crossover aspect is cool, but the plot takes too long to set up that they don't really have time to really flesh out the interactions or give any character time to really shine the heroes each get all of one turn to actually show off their skills.
It was better than DSOD imo the duels were better and Anubis was really cool, I wish they did more with him. I despised the duel style and some of the over the top graphics with DSOD. The Sphinx monsters were cooler than Cubics too.
I saw this movie and it was actually one of one that watched it for my 10th birthday. It's special to me. This movie was filler. Again I saw it on Peacock and it was a guilty pleasure for a 2 decade film to me.
Continuity aside, and the fact that much of it makes no sense, such as why Anubis, the God of Death, would want to attack them like that, the movie is fun to watch.
The main thing I find interesting about this movie is the fact that they had animated all of the cards to look exactly like TCG cards, complete with full English names and text, the whole deal
This was the first time I learned of the series existing. I only remembered a couple monsters. The toons, two mouth dragon (slifer), the Heracross looking dude (obelisk), cute brown fluffy guy (kuriboh), XYZ dragon cannon, the funny voice guy (Joey), boring serious guy (Kaiba), fabulous boy (Pegasus), the magnet warriors, good lord I typed so much!
Personally I've always really liked this movie, animation style was pretty cool and I love a lot of the cards we got to see in it (I remember being so happy as a kid seeing Maju Garzett on screen because I use to love that card) and the continuity issues weren't much of an issue for me since most shonen anime movies are like that lol. While I wouldn't call it a masterpiece or anything I do think it's a fun watch, especially seeing an alternate take on Yugi's and Kaiba's deck post battle city(especially knowing Kaiba was going to pull out a win if it wasn't for his own ego). When I watched DSOD for the first time the one thing that kept popping in my head was how it basically felt like a retread of Pyramid of Light, several of the story beats are similar and if anything I felt that movie tried too hard connecting it's villain to Shadi and Bakura, especially with Bakura not remembering his first time with the Ring, I felt that was way too convenient. Also the duels in DSOD felt way too rushed for me, though it's probably because they happen one after the other in quick succession (and they even get to blue ball you like Pyramid of Light by not finishing the Yugi and Kaiba duel).
I guess I should add the reason I speak of DSOD so negatively is because while Pyramid is treated more as a side story or special event, DSOD is the new canon end to the manga along with transcend game, personally I liked the original ending as it was.
Very stupid to mention rotten tomatoe though because they’re corrupted and are awful critics who can’t ever be taken seriously. Their reviews don’t matter. That said, Pyramid of light was decent for the time. I enjoyed it and i’ve been a fan since the beginning.
I don’t think saying the Pyramid of Light being in a museum is too convenient was a valid point. Because that’s exactly what happened with Shadi’s introduction in the manga Anubis did have more backstory in the Japanese version involving Aknadin sacrificng Anubis in order to make sure the Priest of Light defeats Atem Aknadin wanted to just use Anubis as a pawn, but Anubis rebeled and wanted to kill the Priest of Light and Atem And yes, the cash grab was intended because Yugioh was in its prime in popularity. Pokémon got a movie, so of course Yugioh had to have one too Not even just a cash grab, but to give more attention to the brand itself. Everything that was popular back then got a movie I would say the movie is more junk food than bad. We all like junk food sometimes instead of a steak dinner like DSOD
Yeah, that bit about how the Pyramid(which is a bit random as an 8th Millenium Item in the original english) ties into Aknadin and Seto is a very cool bit of backstory that the japanese localization added through the novel adaptation. It also gave full decklists and profiles for the relevant duelists. They really, really wanted to get this thing to be a proper part of the Duel Monsters branding and that is why I am always giving it the benefit of the doubt in regards to the question of being canon. Nothing explicitly seems to contradict it, so why not?
@@lpfan4491 Yeah the anime canon is crazy enough as it is. I don’t think the movie adds or subtracts anything It’s just more Yugioh. Yugi vs Kaiba. More Blue Eyes vs DM, more Kaiba vs Egyptian gods Junk food. A little bit isn’t bad to supplement a proper diet
I see a lot of people asking for Anubis to be added into Duel Links so I feel like it's a lot more popular than the tomato score. I haven't watched it in a long time but I remember loving it myself. & yeah Dark Side Of Dimensions does have a lot more duels but they feel somewhat rushed in parts.
I loved this series since I was a teenager and I could only stand to ever watch this movie twice. I didn’t like it as a kid and I hate it as an adult (outside of blue eyes shining dragon that monster was a joy to finally summon in master duel) I think you gave it the most fair and balanced review it can ever hope to get personally
Honestly it makes sense that the movie happens right before season 5 even due to the fact that the beginning half of season 5 is really light-hearted compared to the second half Underwood actually explain why kaiba do not study the god cards before because he was preoccupied dealing with the fact that darts with stealing kaiba's company from right under him
Unpopular opinion but I really love this movie. I used to b able to quote every move from the yugi vs kaiba duel. The way the cards look with the fancy lettering look awesome. Anubis is a bit of a meh villain but I think the duels and story are pretty decent. A lot of really quotable lines. DSOD graphics and the way they can choose the power levels of their monsters really puts me off. The movie is ok and the scenes with the gang are great as it gives a great ending for them. Bringing the pharaoh back undoes Yugi's growth.
@@randomguy6230 not seen it. I’ve seen Vrains once and remember almost nothing. I tried watching it twice before then and quit halfway through the first season. It’s so boring, and takes way too long. The second it gets to the point, it rushes through the end of the show
i like this movie way more than DSoD as i personally don't give a crap about continuity i watch YGO to have a fun time and this movie is more fun than DSoD in my opinion
What i find most impressive is that this movie uses the original card layout and not the 4Kids one, even in its dubbed state. Other than that, the lighting was interesting to say the least.
I like how gruesome this movie is. By that they show a brutal stabbing once And there was a line similar to “my maggots shall dine on your flesh.” I think goes hard. The boss guy holding Kaiba by the head with a dog head was scary I don’t expect much of anything because this is 4kids. The movie has a fun theme of death but the characters don’t go anywhere and most of it is this single dual. I think the boss was trying some form of deck out strategy making it harder to play monsters
20 years! Wow just wow!. That means i was 9 when it came out. I still remember asking for a free pack to the lady of the theater hoping to get the Egyptian Gods. Good memories. I remember liking the movie, especially the gang interactions. Oh! and back then Marik losing and becoming a good guy was actually a spoiler for me at least.
Personally the Best Thing about this film is the Soundtrack. And the only other thing that I kind of like about this film is what Yugi said about Victories Meaning Nothing Unless you have Friends to Share It With. Or whatever it’s been a long time since I’ve watch Pyramid Of Light.
Pyramid of Light is to me just like some of the Dragon Ball movies from the 90s. With the franchise riding high I understand from a business standpoint of doing a half ass movie. As a kid growing up with the anime and card game I loved this movie because I couldn’t get enough of Yugioh. Looking back at it now, yeah it’s a mess of a film for sure. But still holds a lot of nostalgia for me
The only thing I remember about Pyramid of Light is that there is a counterpart to the Millennium Puzzle. That's it. Meanwhile, with the absence of Go Rush episodes, I took up an anime to watch but it looks like I will finish it before there is a new episode.
I still remember seeing this movie in theaters when I was 12 & remember loving it so much that I must've rewarded the DVD a dozen times after it released. However, the more I got older, the more I realized just how mediocre the movie really is. The Atem vs. Kaiba duel dragging too long, Anubis showing up near the end & dying 5 min. later, the final showdown against Anubis feeling more like the end of a Pokemon movie, etc. It's not the worst movie ever or a great one either, but we just wanted to see Yugi & Co. duel on the big screen & it even made us go buy a ton of Yugioh cards & food from McDonalds. Basically, what the Pokemon movies did, but without a Game Boy or hypocritical messages about fighting.
It may not be "the best" Yu-Gi-Oh movie but I still enjoy it from time to time. I remember being in 6th grade when this movie released. So it's kind of a nostalgic time capsule for me. I enjoy it for what it is. The story isn't the best, but I like seeing the characters doing stuff.
Yoooo I recently watched this movie on dvd from my local library. I checked it out and it was nice to use my dvd player again. Not a great movie but the soundtrack has some banging songs. “Step Up” is so fun
This movie... It was absolutely terrible. I actually don't really like the other movies but this movie is so much worse. I'd rather watch Zexal the whole way through on the dub without skipping anything than watch the dub and then the sub of this movie. It's so bad. I could not even sit through it the first time without wanting to just turn the movie of.
I dont like the pyramid of light movie neither but it shows us a different perspectiv of the millenium puzzle that wasnt shown until that moment. Also, the strategy of the duels was awesome. Kaiba sets a card and later we learnt, it was a piece of his puzzle and how Yugi knew which card it was and managed to use it to his advantage
I defintely think you were a liittle harsh here lol this movie was a cash grab yes but for when it came out (at least where i'm from), it had enough going for it for my 9 year old self to enjoy it. If I remember correctly in Australia the movie was released right after the Battle City arc finished airing so getting to see Yugi use all the egyption god cards together after watching a whole arc of him trying to collect them (even though they nerfed them early on which was dumb) had me pumped. I also liked the designs of the exclusive cards for Kaiba and Yugi. The Spynx monsters were boring though, they never grabbed me. The duels were pretty fun. You mentioned Kaiba vs Pegasaus - but Joey vs Injection Fairy Lily also comes to mind, as well as Kaiba using megamorph on Blue Eyes-Ultimate Dragon and then getting crushed by Obelisk in the simulation duel, that moment was iconic. Seeing Yugi build the millenium puzzle was also really nice. It had many great sequences like this - at the end of the day the movie feels like filler (in the same way a lot of the old Naruto movies did), but that doesn't make it bad. In some ways, DSOD feels like a perfected (obviously much better) version of this movie -redid the simulation duel, Kaiba's motivation wasn't dissimilar, and the main antagonists both having ancient artefacts that were adjacent to the Millemium Items (Quantam Cube/Pyramid of Light etc. Just my two cents. Love your videos Dylan.
The thing is, i don mind it when things happens so literally and lined up like this for ygo cus it matches into their theme of "everything happens for a reason/ fate" kind of thing u know? Like how pharoah is meant to be sealed away to meet yugi and things happens for him to get his name back anyways etc etc Btw mokuba can just emergency ping where yugi is since he has his duel disk on. DONT QUESTION THE MORAL BEHIND THIS X'DD
I don’t know I thought this was a great movie, as an adult it has flaws, but this in dark side of dimensions are the only two Yu-Gi-Oh movies I go back to. The animation and sound design was great. This is a great epilogue for battle city. The worst thing about this movie is the real life. Pyramid of light card only serves one function and is basically useless.
I actually think it is the second best movie. While the Toei movie and BBT were great watches as a fan, they both really lack substance(The Toei movie not even being canon to the series it is attached to because it contradicts the way Seto's motivation for "revenge" was consistently referenced and handled). Of course, DSoD blows all of them out of the water by a mile by sheer virtue of production values alone, let alone that the story is also by far the best of the movies(despite one or two stumbles because it was reduced from an originally much larger script).
I remember first seeing this movie On-Demand well I didn't exactly watch all of it. Years later I got the movie on DVD, I saw the whole thing and I thought it was good to me....I mean...it's Yu-Gi-Oh and it was one of my favorite shows on Kids WB growing up.
Oooh I can’t wait to throw my own hat into the ring about this when we get to it for appreciating YGO because I recently saw the sub version of this for the first time and the differences are so interesting! Great video as always!
I'm glad you gave Capsule Monsters 6/10 and this movie a 4/10. I'm glad to see someone else shares my liking of Capsule Monsters. Now I only have to find someone who agrees Virtual world is the best arc of the original series.
I think this movie should have been an origin story. Have it loosely adapt the first chapter of the manga, with a little bit of the Shadi Arc. Have Ushio (the bully from the first chapter) fill Kaiba's role as the rival that is being controlled by Anubis.
I really like Pyramid Of Light the movie, because it has the feeling of an entire Yugioh arc all in one movie 🙂. It’s better than Darkside of Dimensions, because that movie was like say goodbye to your friends ☹️.
Also for that whole “blue eye shining dragon should have 4800 attack not 4500 attack” thing when it attached the first time. I feel if they simply had Vorse Raider in the movie instead of rare martial dragon it would have fixed that continuity issue. Vorse raider was strong enough for Kaiba to use and would have withstood yugis knights either way (yugi likely would not sacrificed jack knight to draw with Vorse raider) Yeah I now it was to promote the card rare metal dragon 😊 but it kinda backfired when people found the continuity issue with number of dragons and won’t let it go😅😅
This may sound really crazy, but this use to be my favorite movie of all time as a kid. I seen this movie in theaters, got my Blue Eyes Shining Dragon. Then, when I got the DVD, I watched this movie at least once a week, for about 6 months. Obviously, when I got older, my opinion has changed. I still like this movie mostly because of nostalgia, but I know it aged extremely poorly. lol
Pyramid of Light is just as great as the other two no if's and's or but's about it. Yes, it's a minor continuity issue but it's not like it's Star Wars or anything part of a larger universe spanning decades, it was just a fun movie that stayed true to all the characters. Kaiba getting to beat Pegasus fairly, Joey getting stabbed in the butt and the Blue Eyes Shining Dragon was worth the price alone.
I was 2 years old when this movie came out💀💀💀 20 years later and we still don’t have any direct references to any of the cards that debut in this movie. I would love to get a retrain of Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon & Sorcerer of Dark Magic 😭
I remember watching this movie and hating it when it came out in the US. Later on I saw it in Japanese and was shocked just how much better it was. Still not great, but a massive upgrade.
There's also the fact that Kaiba should've technically won the duel witb Yugi because Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon gained 1500 ATK for 5 dragons that were in his Graveyard when it should've gained 300 more ATK because for some reason the duel didnt count the Paladin Of White Dragon that was also in the Graveyard so when BESD attacked Yugi's Sorcerer Of Dark Magic, Yugi's LP should gone to 0
It was the only Yugioh movie for its time till 6 years later. There had been nothing to compare it since another Yugioh movie didn’t exist. Of course people are gonna like it-it was the only Yugioh movie that existed. 20 years later we’ve gotten 2 other movies and you expect people NOT to discuss about them, and which one was their favorite???? If you like it, that’s cool. Idk why you gotta be pressed if other people don’t.
@@WarriorInBlack1Bonds Beyond Time works less as a standalone narrative tho, like just looking at the structural mess that is having time travel, which breaks canon way worse than Pyramid of Light does. Not to mention it is supposed to be connected directly to a storyline from 5Ds that never even aired in the dubbed version, so it's already feels removed from any coherent context. Dark Side is the only good one of the 3
@@alonsoarana5307 I’m in agreement that DSOD is the only good ygo movie. It’s a direct continuation of Takahashi’s original manga-and further gives us better closure to the characters in the story. It not “wedged” in its timeline and fits seamlessly. It’s a faithful continuation that’s practically just a love letter (and thank you) to the fans. My only major gripe with the film is Atem’s return. Obviously he had to make a return for nostalgia and marketing, but I would’ve preferred if Yugi would’ve beaten Aigami/Bakura instead. Considering Yugi and Atem grew together to learn from another, I think it would’ve strengthened Yugi’s character a lot more to win that fight instead of Atem swooping in-even if Aigami/Bakura was a magic evil entity.
we need a movie centred around Yugi (not Atem) vs Jaiden Yuki. there doesn't need to be a "bad" guy: you could do a kind of tournament movie (would need to be written well though) that could see duels like Joey vs Syrus, Mokuba (using thunder dragons) vs Hasslebury etc. Could even make it a movie mini series 3-4 episodes long - then you could include an antagonist (maybe not yami Bakura). would be very interesting to see and would spread a little bit of movie love for non DM series
Probably the biggest middle finger towards the movie, Sphinx cards never got Legacy Support compared to Malefic and Cubic.
I think those cards weren't even reprint.
They should have been expanded on
Not only that blue eyes shining dragon was unplayable back then
@@revice950exactly, BEUD wasn’t even released to North America until 2007 via shonen jump promo
Not only that, but the Nemleria cards are inspired by them so clearly they are on Konami's radar somewhat lol
It came out in japan later because this movie was produced by 4Kids. It was their idea and that is also the main reason why the writting was so bad. They just wanted to make a cash grab before DM ends
Typical money fiend practices.
That makes so much sense. Wondered why the beginning was so off canon, with Yugi putting the puzzle together.
Despite this I still enjoyed the movie.
yet they've been milking the DM cow for YEARS! LOL! This year's megatin literally has Atem and Kaiba on the cover hahahahaha!!

Take the movie for what it is, and when we were younger we were the target audience and it was amazing at the time
My fav thing about Pyramid of Light is a misunderstanding I had with it as a child.
LMAO.
Of course you assumed, as you got the anime localized to American/Western audiences.
That line was referenced in GX after Jaden defeats Viper. I knew about the Wizard of Oz, but not that line. Thus, I thought Duel Academy was actually in Kansas.
@@LordTchernobog Wizard of Oz is so ancient at this point many people wouldn't get the joke
The art and animation still holds up despite being 20 years old looks like it came out in recently years.
The Japanese version is better than the dub, but still a bad movie!
However i think this is better than DSOD actually!
@@tarikkash4282 i think so too
@@KuzumiyaRiku Not to mention that Yugi actually gets to do something rather than just letting Atem do mostly everything!
@@tarikkash4282 yup, Atem do the duel and Yugi are helping him in another side.
That it does, my friend. That it does.
The problem is everyone’s comparing the movie to the newer movies but this was the FIRST theatrical release of yugioh. And as a KID when this movie CAME OUT it was a 10/10 one of the coolest experiences I had when I was a kid. But people grow up and turn into movie critics instead of enjoying a certified classic.
this ^
What bugs me is when all the people were swarming Yugi demanding a duel for the god cards, instead of fleeing into the museum, Yugi should've dueled them. It could've been a montage of him dueling several of them. It would show that he deserves the cards. Or they could do a smash cut to Yugi walking away with twenty new cards in his hand.
It’s out of character for Yugi to collect heads like that and not worth Atems time.😂
@shangothunder1055 This is after battle city, so this would've been character development.
At least we got "You're Not Me" out of it.
I definitely agree 👍
The whole soundtrack was good
The soundtrack is mid
Not gonna lie, my first thought to this comment was Persona 4.
The whole soundtrack was fire ❤️
Can't say I'm super fond of the movie, but for better or worse it played a role in my entrance to the franchise.
What *IS* worth remembering about it is that Kaiba's hate boner for Yugi was genuinely the strongest it ever was, and Pegasus' sass was on a different level.
Dude Pegasus in the Dub was HILARIOUS, the movie definitely was funny in the Dub. Certainly one of the more goofier pieces of Yu-Gi-Oh Media that we have gotten
The dub really jacks up Kaiba's dickery. In the sub, he's still competitive but he's not disrespecting Yugi in every breath 😂
@@alcatrazvongola Dub Kaiba acts like Yugi orphaned him and killed Mokuba in this movie.
Oh, yes. Pegasus steals the show in any Yugioh media he’s in and I think Daren Dunstan is amazing in every scene he’s in.

I agree also Bonds Beyond Time is a lot better than Dark side of Dimensions. DSOD is cool but have the weakest plot and nostalgic bait.
I like bonds beyond time a lot more but I felt like dark side of dimensions was better narratively and story wise
@@Jonathanloh1992 And don't forget, it's the only film not to focus on the feud between Yugi and Kaiba!

I actually do like Pyramid of Light Better then the Capsule Monsters TV show
At least Pyramid of Light felt more like a real Yugioh piece of media rather than a Pokémon/Digimon rip-off.
The Only thing that I liked in Capsule Monsters was the Villain Alexander the Great (even though that his backstory made no sense) and Yugi's armour that he used to fuse his monsters like the anime version of the millennium world arc.
Imagine if they made a GX film, I’d still want it
For a 25th anniversary, I think they should’ve given Studio Gallop one last hurrah to make a movie with all of their protags. I want to see Yuma and Yuya meet. Same with Yusei and Yusaku
I’ve heard a GX film was planned. But was ultimately cancelled.

The fact that Seto’s pride demands he actually defeats the Egyptian Gods instead of, you know, circumvent their summoning…? And then he plays Pyramid of Light the Trap and it literally does the job FOR him!
Like you know it’s a movie that was to celebrate an anniversary. I feel you get what you paid for (in theatres). A fun time if you shut off your brain and just enjoy some good old fashioned Yugioh action/dueling. Hard to argue it was ever intended to be more then an one off
You know it's not great when you hear the phrase "shut off your brain"
@@Saimlordyit’s not meant to be great, it’s meant to be for children.
At least with the movie you can turn your brain off and just enjoy the spectacle but when you're reading the exact same script and it's events are described to you it's so much worse because now you're FORCED to think about it
I think all of ARC-V is the worst piece of yugioh media. The manga being worse than the anime but I still find the anime to be pretty bad
You forgot to mention the the part they animated Yugi literally getting stabbed in the back
I love Pyramid of Light but I have a personal nipick about the main villain anubis preventing kaiba from defeating the pharaoh. they could have let kaiba defeat the pharaoh then anubis knocks out kaiba and we get a second duel. all they had to do was make the movie longer.
I truly agree. The movie is mid because this was the only good ones back then.

That first line is also one that's been stuck in my head for the last 15-20 years, although in the danish dub version where it's exactly as amazing
if you think about it it’s really weird that something as popular as Yu-Gi-Oh only has four animated movies while Pokémon has 23 or Detective Conan has 27
Honestly, Dillon.
There's also some extra lore in the Novel that Anubis and Aknadin created the Pyramid of Light for Priest Seto
There was good plot buried within the lore. If only the writers cared.
@@Mysticgamerthe novel came after
This movie was pretty cool, in my opinion. The only thing that I don't like about the movie is Anubis, the main antagonist of Pyramid of Light. He doesn't do much anything until he interrupted Yugi and Kaiba's duel as he takes over it
Yeah I agree
The weakest villain I’ve seen so far and forgettable.
For what it's worth, my pick for worst yugioh movie is Bonds Beyond Time. The crossover aspect is cool, but the plot takes too long to set up that they don't really have time to really flesh out the interactions or give any character time to really shine the heroes each get all of one turn to actually show off their skills.
Hell no bonds beyond time was way better
It was better than DSOD imo the duels were better and Anubis was really cool, I wish they did more with him.
I despised the duel style and some of the over the top graphics with DSOD.
The Sphinx monsters were cooler than Cubics too.
I saw this movie and it was actually one of one that watched it for my 10th birthday. It's special to me. This movie was filler. Again I saw it on Peacock and it was a guilty pleasure for a 2 decade film to me.
The movie was a glorified commercial for some cards that range from “meh” to “it sucks.”
I definitely agree 👍
You mean the same show the movie is based on
Continuity aside, and the fact that much of it makes no sense, such as why Anubis, the God of Death, would want to attack them like that, the movie is fun to watch.
I understand the criticisms, but I actually like this movie. I love the soundtrack as well.
I don’t think saying the Pyramid of Light being in a museum is too convenient was a valid point. Because that’s exactly what happened with Shadi’s introduction in the manga
Anubis did have more backstory in the Japanese version involving Aknadin sacrificng Anubis in order to make sure the Priest of Light defeats Atem
Aknadin wanted to just use Anubis as a pawn, but Anubis rebeled and wanted to kill the Priest of Light and Atem
And yes, the cash grab was intended because Yugioh was in its prime in popularity. Pokémon got a movie, so of course Yugioh had to have one too
Not even just a cash grab, but to give more attention to the brand itself. Everything that was popular back then got a movie
I would say the movie is more junk food than bad.
I don’t think the movie adds or subtracts anything
It’s just more Yugioh. Yugi vs Kaiba. More Blue Eyes vs DM, more Kaiba vs Egyptian gods
Junk food. A little bit isn’t bad to supplement a proper diet
Yu-Gi-Oh bonds beyond time way better than Yu-Gi-Oh pyramid of light and Yu-Gi-Oh dark side of dimensions is the g.o..a.t movie

What i find most impressive is that this movie uses the original card layout and not the 4Kids one, even in its dubbed state. Other than that, the lighting was interesting to say the least.
Yeah I like they used the original card layout and they makes me wanna buy one when I was a kid.
I wish for a uncut yugioh DM remake
Getting BESD in the TCG 16 months before BEUD was definitely a choice
I like how gruesome this movie is. By that they show a brutal stabbing once
And there was a line similar to “my maggots shall dine on your flesh.” I think goes hard.
1:54 bro that’s so underrated
Pyramid of Light is to me just like some of the Dragon Ball movies from the 90s. With the franchise riding high I understand from a business standpoint of doing a half ass movie. As a kid growing up with the anime and card game I loved this movie because I couldn’t get enough of Yugioh. Looking back at it now, yeah it’s a mess of a film for sure. But still holds a lot of nostalgia for me
I saw this movie in theaters with my father and siblings. I can’t believe it’s already been 20 years. Hope you’ve been well Dylan.
I'd actually love to see the Anubis cards get retrains and/or legacy support. I'm curious about how they'd try to update it.
The only thing I remember about Pyramid of Light is that there is a counterpart to the Millennium Puzzle. That's it.
Meanwhile, with the absence of Go Rush episodes, I took up an anime to watch but it looks like I will finish it before there is a new episode.
Still the best ygo movie,we finally got to see post battle city Atem using the Gods and adjusting his deck properly, shame we never got that again.
4:18: Hold on, that is my Yu-Gi-Oh Timeline.
I saw this movies in theatres in 2004 with my younger brother and I remember the Fixed Elclusive Booster pack witth the same 9 cards lol
Like how pharoah is meant to be sealed away to meet yugi and things happens for him to get his name back anyways etc etc
Btw mokuba can just emergency ping where yugi is since he has his duel disk on.
12:35 In a show filled with, "You lose your Soul" moments, that's an amazing way to describe it. Lmaooo
The Soundtrack is definitely the real highlight of The Movie
I watched this movie on repeat growing up bc I loved this franchise so much. Granted, I was like 7, but still
12:18 I’m still glad that they tried though because it’s very rare for some other shows to get their animated movies
Oooh I can’t wait to throw my own hat into the ring about this when we get to it for appreciating YGO because I recently saw the sub version of this for the first time and the differences are so interesting! Great video as always!
No. The movie does take place after Battle City because the announcer in the TV report mentions Yugi defeating Kaiba in the Battle City Finals
Despite how disappointing it was i still love this movie my only problem with the it kinda felt rushed mainly the duel between yugi and kaiba
Apparently in this movie even the Egyptian gods weren't considered real monsters even though Ra's (even a fake) thing was that it burned people
I'm glad you gave Capsule Monsters 6/10 and this movie a 4/10. I'm glad to see someone else shares my liking of Capsule Monsters.
Now I only have to find someone who agrees Virtual world is the best arc of the original series.
I remember having a VHS of this movie, and figuring out how to work a VCR player (I was used to DVD's) to watch this movie.
My favorite Yu-Gi-Oh movie
I'm not the biggest fan of it, but it certainly has some memorable moments
Vorse raider was strong enough for Kaiba to use and would have withstood yugis knights either way (yugi likely would not sacrificed jack knight to draw with Vorse raider)
Yeah I now it was to promote the card rare metal dragon 😊 but it kinda backfired when people found the continuity issue with number of dragons and won’t let it go😅😅
When this came out if you got a kids combo at the movies they give you cards
This may sound really crazy, but this use to be my favorite movie of all time as a kid. I seen this movie in theaters, got my Blue Eyes Shining Dragon. Then, when I got the DVD, I watched this movie at least once a week, for about 6 months.
Obviously, when I got older, my opinion has changed. I still like this movie mostly because of nostalgia, but I know it aged extremely poorly. lol
This was in theaters when I was 11 and I spent that summer doing chores and saving up money to see it only for my dad to change his mind
I would’ve liked the other shows to get their animated movies as well
Pyramid of Light is just as great as the other two no if's and's or but's about it.
I was 2 years old when this movie came out💀💀💀
20 years later and we still don’t have any direct references to any of the cards that debut in this movie.
4:08 for me the movie takes place between KC GP and pharaoh memory arc (just After yugi beating Leon)
I was 30 years old and I loved it dude and bonds beyond time real name is 3D
There's also the fact that Kaiba should've technically won the duel witb Yugi because Blue-Eyes Shining Dragon gained 1500 ATK for 5 dragons that were in his Graveyard when it should've gained 300 more ATK because for some reason the duel didnt count the Paladin Of White Dragon that was also in the Graveyard so when BESD attacked Yugi's Sorcerer Of Dark Magic, Yugi's LP should gone to 0
13:15 that how I feel about this film, there was genuine passion just look at the music
Completely disagree this was a great movie for its time. U keep comparing it to something made over 15 years later like give me a break.
I feel the same
@@WarriorInBlack1Bonds Beyond Time works less as a standalone narrative tho, like just looking at the structural mess that is having time travel, which breaks canon way worse than Pyramid of Light does.
This movie was my first on dvd when I was 12.
It's still the highest grossing YU-GI-OH movie of all time. I still love it for shining dragon too
we need a movie centred around Yugi (not Atem) vs Jaiden Yuki. there doesn't need to be a "bad" guy: you could do a kind of tournament movie (would need to be written well though) that could see duels like Joey vs Syrus, Mokuba (using thunder dragons) vs Hasslebury etc. Could even make it a movie mini series 3-4 episodes long - then you could include an antagonist (maybe not yami Bakura). would be very interesting to see and would spread a little bit of movie love for non DM series
