00:00 Intro
00:36 Deck and cockpit added to aluminum hull
02:09 Why build an aluminum sailboat?
03:12 What changes have you made to customize the boat?
06:15 Aluminum corrosion on sailboats?
08:28 What's the best aluminum to use on sailboats?
09:00 Are you still doing Sail Away Weeks?
10:32 Why build an aluminum boat in the Netherlands?
13:04 When will your boat be launched?
Thanks for acknowledging the Dutch craftsmanship and our communication culture.
Wish you all the best with the beautiful designed new boat!
I’ve only interacted with a few Dutchmen/women but you really hit the nail on the head with communications. They don’t filter what they think and it keeps things real!
I listen to my UA-cam videos on a high definition sound system. Your's is by far the best sound quality on UA-cam. Thank you.
Safe journeys.
Dutchie here, I love you guy's call us easy and honest to work with, that means you get it. I worked with Royal Huisman and future owners, we did the kitchen supplies, they were awesome to work with. If you ever want to meet very nice people who build amazing dreams, please don't feel shy to ask them for a tour when you are back. They build in Vollenhove, not that far away.
Love watching your build. Very interesting and informative. Fair Winds!!!
6:45 Aluminum by itself doesn't corrode. it oxidizes in contact with seawater or when anodized, which is something we want very much since Aluminum Oxide is inert (passivated) and won't corrode. In fact Aluminum Oxide is related to the mineral most sandpaper is made from, and some gemstones.
Galvanic corrosion happens when we have dissimilar metals in an electrolyte like seawater, and is controlled by electrical bonding and sacrificial anodes. Galvanic corrosion can happen on a plastic composite boat between any two different metals in contact with seawater. So that part really isn't functionally different in a metal boat.
Paul explained all of this very well, as usual.
Glad to hear you're going hybrid. Electric drive in a sailboat is an excellent synergy with nature when the energy used to motor out of a harbor, off a mooring, or away from anchorage can be replaced by wind power simply by sailing. And the batteries can be recharged from a wide diversity of sources: aforementioned hydrogeneration, diesel generator, solar, shore power, etc.
Great Q&A. I simply love the boat you are building. Thanks for sharing.
I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for a new post from you guys! "Customizable." "Customizations"~~~. Just what you want! Just great. It's the shallow draft design. Thank you so much for sharing all of this.
I posted a question months ago on what your choice of engine was going to be. So glad you are choosing hybrid design. Can’t wait to see the results.
Exciting build. You to have a lot to look forward to. As well as us!
Great information for anyone planning to build. Thanks
Hi guys thank you for the update on your new aluminium boat sounds like it’s charging your head going to be wonderful to see it finished but in the meantime it’s good to have some update on the stages thank you once again for your videos Cliff from Logan city Queensland in Australia from the big island
You guys have too much fun! Great build, nice tech, and cool programing. Rock on. Can't wait to see your rigging programing. I hope you make it up to Homer Alaska some day. Cheers, Carl
I don't even know you but am so excited for you. Thank you for sharing
Very true about the Dutch. I have worked with them and appreciated their language, communication skills, and accuracy.
It’s amazing how many Dutch speak a number of other languages
You Guys are pros - thank you for sharing
thanks a lot, it’s amazing project and the film!
LOL. "The Dutch say what they think." I know where you are coming from. My mother is Dutch and she just says what she thinks and sometimes, here in the US, it comes across kind of rough. There is never any malice towards others with what is said just pure honesty. Once you understand this, its very refreshing. I wish more people would learn and appreciate this. This topic also popped up in an episode of Ted Lasso.
Loving all the videos on this build. Always happy when a new one comes out. I didn't know you changed the hull shape to compensate for the extra weight in the stern. Are there other areas that were customized that aren't easily apparent?
Cheers.
Great video! Samar asked me "why aluminum" a few days ago - your answer was much better than mine! ;)
Thanks, Bob! It was so good to see you and Samar in Cambridge and at the Annapolis Sailboat Show
I just love these updates! I'm hoping the boat is finished sooner than expected. : - ) Oh, and I really enjoyed talking with both of you at the US Sailboat Show. Maybe you'll have the new boat at the show next year! ? ? ?
Fingers crossed things continue on schedule! Yes the Sailboat Show was excellent!
I would suggest using Hempel silic 1 for your bottom paint, I sanded back my 35ft aluminium charter boat 18months ago, being a new build the application will be real easy.
Very excited for you!
Thank you!!
Looking forward to updates
Wow looks similar to a Garcia Exploration 45. Great job guys.
The Dutch say what they mean. We returned a dinged rental car in Amsterdam, apologizing for having bumped into a few things in Italy. The clerk said with a little regret, "You have the full insurance so there is nothing I can do to you." Then on the KLM flight back to the States some part of the air conditioning was dripping water from the ceiling. The Dutch flight attendant looked up at it, drip drip on his shirt; then he reached up and stuck his finger over the leak. I cracked up - no one else got it. A higher percentage of people in the Netherlands and Scandinavia speak English than in my neighborhood here in Los Angeles.
….there’s a leak in the plane!
The one thing I like about Aluminum / steel boats are chain plates and bollards are not through bolted but actually welded to the decks. No place for leaks to occur because no holes in the deck and no bolts to rust or become loose. Good luck with your build. Congratulations .
Pulleys/sheaves/turning blocks can be lashed/tied with rope to the Aluminum tube/rod toerails too. Also no hull penetrations, just ropes/webbing through slots in aluminum. Can't corrode or leak, and when it wears enough, just re-lash.
I’m working on a 30 year old Ovni which was left bare on the inner hull and is pitted just from condensation mixed with dirt and dust. Areas that where painted are perfect. I would always paint the inner hull without fail. Providing it is prepared properly. I’ve not heard if you are painting or not but thought I should say. Someone in the life of your boat will hate you if you don’t!
Good session!
Just chose your material wisely.
Sven Yrvind (then 'Sven Lundin'), the very renowned and eccentric Swedish solo cruiser and boat builder of tiny boats, made a discovery in the 1980s that even the best designed and constructed vessel will encounter problems. In his case he got to experience the results of having chosen the wrong aluminum alloy, and in combination with the incorrect type of sacrificial anodes, his vessel 'Bris' essentially disintegrated outside South America. At the end forcing him to both abandon vessel and circumnavigation.
That said, aluminum, or rather the correct aluminum alloy, is an excellent material. Even if left 'naked'. But as always, brings with it additional challenges when connected to shore power. Especially if docked for longer periods of time.
You really know what you want, and it gives you the confidence to undergo such customization project. I admire you. You'll have a wonderful sailboat, that will take you towards amazing adventures. Can wait for the splash! Out of curiosity, have you considered a Boreal 47 boat? There is a YT channel called SirErnst with guys sailing to Antarctica, seems to be a boat perfectly fit for it. Did you eventually consider those at some point? Fair winds to you two!
Thank you
Hi folks. You mentioned about full custom boats being more expensive than you wanted etc. Did I miss an episode where you talked about your planned budget before you got started? If so, would you please kindly direct me to it? Perhaps I missed it along the way. I'm curious to know how much a semi-custom vs full-custom boat changes things and if it's within the realm of possibility.
Please do a video on the instrumentation you will install and why you selected it
This building series is awesome. I also like Netherlands very much.
Will you reveal the costs? It is really fast build in my opinion.
🤫 ... *the* Netherlands... 😉
Going Dutch? Talking about costs? 😂
Greetings from a Dutchman, living in The Hague, the Netherlands. 🇳🇱
Thank you for the videos I’m really enjoying them and learning a lot.
I missed the Annapolis boat show because I got Covid but maybe I’ll see you there in the spring.
Thankyou 👍
You’re welcome 😊
I heard from friends at the ABS that you two are real and original. Awesome to hear that UA-camrs at your level are still real. Sad that some UA-camrs have lost touch with their base audience.
Thanks guys! Looking forward to seeing more of yawls build.
Thanks for the kind words Blair! The Annapolis Boat Show was great and we were thrilled to get together with so many other UA-camrs there as well as so many viewers!
Of Course, they're Canadian.
@@Pfsif That's a stereotype, but nonetheless true in this case.
We are excited to see your build, as we are also having an aluminum boat build. Alubat, Ovni 370. We have been to the factory as well and it's great to see the similarities and differences. Our manufacturer in France does not provide the type of Solar Panels, Lithium batteries, Hydrovane, OC Tender or many other upgrades we would like. We would like to ship these , US made tools and other parts for our boat to the EU. We'll be out of the EU well before the 18 months. So I believe the boat is are considered a "Vessel in Transit" Now on to my question. Do you have an experience with "important agents" ? Are you considering this for your build? We're trying to avoid the VAT. If you possibly have any insight we would greatly appreciate it.
How will you heat and insulate the hull to protect water pipes, components and boat in high latitudes and very cold/freezing conditions?
The Enksail Orion will be equipped with a central water heater. The pipes of this heater run partly through the bilges. The hull will be sprayed on the inside with 6 cm of foam insulation. The insulating effect has proven itself on a 43 foot Enksail Noorkaper which we delivered to a Swedish owner. He uses his boat in the winter as long as he can.
The windows of the deckhouse and those in the hull will be made of thermopane glass and are therefore also well insulated.
Normally we therefore have little problems with condensation.

what kind of hybrid system will be installed on your wonderful boat?
i was up at makkum last week looking at a koopamns 60. the brokers idea of ocean ready was very different to mine unfortunatley. long way to go from NZ.
however youre right the dutch are very good at aluminium and usually really good communicators.
an orion would be my pick or aluminium catamaran if i had the budget.
have you had any trouble with the recent aluminium shortage and price hike?
All aluminum was bought back in February thank goodness 😅
Hi, how you do the isolation of the hull?
As you are planning to go to high lattitudes, how much more insulation is planned compared to a tropics cruiser?
I would think that equal amount of insulation is required to keep heat out and heat in. Being cool in the tropics is as important as being warm in the high latitudes.
I would think the condensation on a metal boat would be more so. Is the bilge pumping being a bigger issue for the build with that type of a boat?
Fortunate to have each other that like living on the water.
Thanks MK - yes I know how lucky I am !!!
Do you plan on a wheel, or tiller helm?
We're meeting with Sirius to discuss a 40DS. The burning & serious question I have is, what's the cost for this Orion 49?? Ballpark...?
Супер Крейсер! 👍
What about the heat and cold weather operating/living inside an Aluminum boat?....will it have better performance/comfort over conventional fiber glass?
Cold weather livability is achieved with insulation.
How do you counter act the electrolysis??
You had me up until the hybrid drive. From a performance and packaging point of view I would have chosen straight electric drive with battery and standby generator set. You can run wires alot easier then propeller shafts.
Which one more secure, strength, durable, and cheap? Aluminum or HDPE sailboat?
Is that a Swing Keek or Centerboard? Continue to Stay Safe and Enjoy 😎
What’s your tank sizes? Fuel, fresh, black water, etc…
Tank volumes of the Enksail Orion 49
Fuel tank 800 liters
Water tank 650 liters
Black water tank approx 180 litersFuel tank 800 liters
Water tank 650 liters
Black water tank approx 180 liters

Why would you go with twin rudders?
Come and race from Port Huron to Mackinaw.
What about condisation?
What colour is your boat going to be?
I hope alu color it’s so beautifull
Will Distant Shores try a Carbon Fiber Mast and Boom? Would Dyheema Rigging be on your List ?
Thanks @GregoryH We're going for a standard alu mast and boom and stainless rigging... but there will be plenty of Dyneema running rigging and carbon downwind poles.
@@DistantShoresTV you Two have a Happy Holidays and Can’t wait to See more of your New Sailboat ⛵ will you Bless the New Sailboat ? Peace Be With You Two
I would have liked to see you building a slightly longer boat, with that amazing hull shape, as you're planning to be sailing into arctic waters. With all of the calving of ice due to the climate changes, you'll be able to quickly move to safer waters, but might be able to maneuver more quickly with a longer waterline.
The boat will be stunning, beautifully built and incredibly well kitted out.
Thank you for sharing and great good luck!
Imptessive people, you are. Are you sure you are not Proffesors. Your explanations tell me you could be. Looking forward to enjoying watching you experience your new boat.
Aluminium! Aluminum is a trademark of ALCOA.
Good Q & A. Insulation is a big deal on an AL boat since it's such a good conductor. Would like to hear plans and choices there. Also lightning protection plans and rationale. Thanks.
I agree and we will be making a whole video on the insulation and inside coatings 🙂also one on lightning protection...
Our boat wasn't insulated, wise choice that you are doing that! What propulsion are you going with?
@@sailinggizmoYour meaning isn't clear. It was wise to not insulate or you didn't and you wish you had?
@@4stringmanagmaildcom our boat was 2nd hand, and was not insulated, except for a fiber/cork composite which was adhered to the deck with some serious epoxy. We would much rather have had insulation, not only for the higher latitudes but the tropics as well.
@@DistantShoresTV we spent 8 hours in one of the most intense lightning storms we have ever seen, fortunately no strikes but several close surface strikes and multiple cloud-to-cloud strikes directly overhead. It seemed like we sailed through Mordor!!! Handheld vhf, tablet and InReach stayed in the oven that night. Would really like to see your lightning protection setup.
A few lessons we learned:
-VHF and AIS antenna will cause ground leakage in the hull. Isolate it properly
-Starting circuit will cause leakage, isolate that. We have a basic toggle that is switched on for cranking, then switched off after cranking.
We are following your build closely.
Price though?
So i have issues with the double un-skeged rudders, especially in an exploration boat? what are your thoughts, and would a Garcia 54 not have worked?
I admire the Garcia 54 but wanted a heavier keel for upwind offshore performance.
Garcia Exploration range doesn't have skegs.
Hi from Spain. Big project! I wanted to know why you have not put two engines, I think that length and for long journeys is an interesting security point.
I'm Dutch. They can be straight forward. Speak their minds no nonsens. hahha
Could you share me the blueprint of the boat no i want to build a boat too
Hybrid? Does that mean a Diesel engine and a few electric engines or is there an actual hybrid engine I haven’t heard of? Or is it electric engines with a generator? I’m mreally looking forward to seeing the setup.
You talked about the type of aluminium and possibility of sailing through ice. Will your boat get an ice rating? How thick is the hull? Do you get extra ice reinforcements? Thanks
Only us dutch can do this. Congrats on this amazing build
Thanks! And yes we've been super-impressed with the level of Dutch boatbuilding!
How much is this costing you?
How much it cost ?
Loads of money !
@@melvynparkerson9984 Yes ,that for sure 😃👍🏼❤️
🇵🇰 GOOD 👍
Why did you not choose to build a skeg in front of your rudder?
Because they want to sail.
good question
Building a strong skeg is (in engineering terms) somewhat redundant on a metal boat of expedition grade, because the potential loads arising from axial torsion on the spade rudder means it must have scantlings which result in it also being similarly strong in the lateral directions as a skeg. If they are well engineered, they will bend rather than break in massive overload circumstances. The rudder post will be almost as wide as a skeg would, but of solid, ductile metal.
Such loads would also bend any skeg (and possibly the hull where it is attached) and thereby jam the steering, whereas a moderately bent spade rudder with spherical roller bearings will probably still operate on a 'get you home' basis.
@@Gottenhimfella Thank you for this reply - I to ponder this question. I believe Jim Cornel bent one of his rudders on the 45 and didn't even know it till it was hulled out.
I am Scottish and speak my mind. I do this without any intention to offend but I won't compromise to suit Americans or any others.
Why custom, why not something like a Garcia 45 which is already well thought out for high latitudes?
Because Garcia Exploration 45 doesn't sail particularly well (internally ballasted with centerboard and heavy displacement) and the interior layout wasn't to their preference (galley location etc.).
Aluminum shallow draft/centerboard monohulls are the way to go. Check out our 39' 'aluminium' Ovni, ua-cam.com/video/NU_E_Z6r-_c/v-deo.html
We bumped elbows with you two in Annapolis, you seemed to be getting alot of questions and fans so we left you alone.
Cheers on the new boat!
It was a crazy busy show. Sorry we missed chatting with you!
@@DistantShoresTV no worries! It is great to follow your build.
Never loose a copper coin in the bilge...😉
pity that there are no subtitles in French I find this comparison between Alu / Grp shell interesting
I do pay to have all episodes captioned in English so you can turn on Autotranslate for French. Recently I did pay to have an episode translated to both French and German but it was expensive and analytics showed very few watched with the translations ….
@@DistantShoresTV Warning ! I didn't say that to embarrass you!! I did not know ! that it was paying to make subtitles on YT!! , I just said to myself that for once it was interesting, too bad there were no subtitles.
No, I am one of those who use translations into French from English and it allows you to revise ......; Thank you for your videos and your tone of humor, I find it very nice
yes i have a question......why would you?
''sorry interrup you honey..'' this was should be a key of long term relation with your wife and your sail..
So Jealous..
Corrosion... they don't hang on to their boats long enough to have any effect lol
Why didn‘t you go for a cat?
Not as pretty as a Discovery
That boat is made from 5000 series aluminum which for all intents and purposes, is Noble in sea water.
Don’t try this at home kids.
