Tony already knew Richie was going to be a problem after that exchange with Christopher. It’s still one of the best The Sopranos twists with what happened with Janice.
Tony knew that Richie was entitled to bust Chrissy's balls, him being an old-school and all..
This scene alone is phenomenal. From richie threatening chris to Tony just getting up and leaving when richie starts to talk business.
@ChunkyThund3r TONY did that because the feds could be listening to there conversations by bugging the area by the store, especially since Richie just got out of prison in that episode
@ChunkyThund3r I have met people who were in that type of lifestyle. And got to know them a bit. In that mob world it’s very important to establish psychological dominance in being solid, reverse psychology, dark Manipulation and more

Along with Gandolfini, David Proval was actually one of the most convincing actors on this entire series. What a talent.
I hated Richie so much when i first watched the series. Now i wish he would've been in more seasons. Proval did an amazing job playing the character.
he also had to worry about his daughter falling In love with Robert Barone, he had a lot on his plate including buying and running Nemos Pizza
Ironically at the end it was christopher who chopped richie in the satriale's workshop.
I thought they buried him in a hill. Overlooking a little river with pine cones all around.
Just another powerful example of the incredibly high level of The Sopranos. So much nuance, so much story telling, so much raw acting power, packed in here. Unbelievable.
“Capable “ has already been discussed.
Another thing is when Christopher offers his hand to Richie at the end of their exchange. at first it seems unnecessary, even contrite..but as the moment plays out, it proves to be the correct/appropriate finishing touch to the conversation as per old school rules of respect.
Why does everyone feel the need to explain Chris' handshake? It was a show of respect. That simple.
How Chris carries himself here is key. Without saying a word, he essentially demonstrates to Richie that while he doesn't like being spoken to that way, he's smart enough to know that he can't do a fucking thing about it. There's not a moment of fear in his eyes throughout the encounter and Richie recognizes this.
It's scenes like this that make The Sopranos so damned brilliant. There's depth and subtlety in not only the writing but the performances as well.
Richie actually liked Chris, which is crazy since Richie is a monster. He was breaking balls with Matt and Sean but then quickly says "kid has good things too".
"now get outta here. You're blockin my sun. That nose is like a natural canopy"
Yea he's like our homie. After slip n fall school we were UP IN DA CLUB!
Richie tells Chrissy this only to give Janice a right hook before saying i do himself 😂
I'm not condoning it but I'd say that Janice is a completely different case than his niece.
I thought it was pretty consistent. Richie tells Chris that if he marries her then it's none of his business. Richie only hit Janice after he married her which lines up with what he told Chris.
Chris had enough respect to know that wasn’t the time, or place, for an argument…. I think he also knew Richie was more than ‘capable’ as well.
And Tony was chillin, watching how each person reacted…… great actors…. awesome show.
I love how Tony was looking up at Chris in absolute agreement with Ritchie. He didnt even have to say it, James' subtle head nodding was enough. Brilliant performance from all.
'Capable...'
Tony was warning Richie.
@@fabiokaya202 Yes. And what happens if you get in the way of the MAFIAS MONEY?

@@johnlewisbrooks True, but that wasn't a warning. Tony was reservedly complimenting Chris because Chris is a capable earner but also a headache. So he's only "a good kid" as Richie stated to a certain extent.
He’s actually correct in saying it was a warning. Saying “he’s capable “ means he’s killed someone and he’s not a push over so in fact warning Ritchie
@@angelomuto8516 So Richie says he's a good kid. Tony says with a light shrug and modesty "capable" and you took that as a warning instead of him tempering Richie's inaccurate perception? Did you see Richie's interactions with Chris after that scene? If it was a warning he sure wasn't afraid.

@@ELV8.94 Chris didn't leave until Tony told him to also. A lot of subtle stuff in this scene
@@ELV8.94 no, he wouldnt have talked business regardless of the interaction with chris. The whole idea of the mafia having a structure of capos and soldiers is to insulate the boss from possible legal recourse. Not to mention Richie just got out of jail, he may have a wire.
It wasn't a power move, it was purely about how things had changed while Richie was in prison. Tony did not want to be seen or heard talking business at that particular location. Richie didn't know about the new rules and just started talking business so Tony had to remove himself from the conversation immediately.
Regarding the last handshake. Chris acknowledged Richie's OG right to preach, yet at the same time asserted his own standing. Very powerful play by someone who was fully aware of himself being "capable."
Sil sat down in Tony's chair symbolizes Richie's imprisonment that Chris tried avoiding by walking away. This show is brilliant!
@@mja91352 A woman killed Richie. I hated Richie more than any other character including Phil Leotardo and Johnny Sack.

If you liked David Proval's great acting as Richie, try to see a little-known movie he was in called "Innocent Blood". He also played a mafia-type, but differently. The movie was simultaneously a comedy, a mafia movie, a vampire horror movie, and a love story. It starred a young Anthony LaPaglia (before he was in the"Without a Trace" t.v. show), Ann Parillaud ("La Femme Nikita"), Robert Loggia (see his Wikipedia entry, he was in many great movies over a long career), Don Rickles, who was great as a mob lawyer, and Luis Guzman (known for his character work in many movies including Crocodile Dundee II, Carlito's Way, Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love, and many more). This movie is a hoot and not only will you enjoy Proval's performance but all of the others as well. A criminally underrated and unknown movie.
Proval is an underrated and under appreciated actor. His work on The Sopranos is super professional and top notch. His movie Nunzio from the late 1970’s also is a phenomenal work. Much respect to Mr. Proval.

Richie was such an unrepentant and despicable jerk that he stood out even among all of the other monsters on this show. He was also completely incompetent and a volatile disaster waiting to happen. It's a shame they couldn't keep him around for more seasons, but this character wasn't going to last with the way he behaved.

Richie threatens Chrissy for hitting Adrianna, but is killed by Janice for putting hands on her. Poetic.
David Proval is an incredible actor. Thank you for posting.
When Tony said that Chris is capable he meant that among all crew of the Sopranos Chris was the only capable of smoking the cigarette in the hurricane rain with hands tied behind his back and the cigarette wouldn't even get wet.
You wanna talk like a hasidic homeboy we'll send you to build Beansie a ramp.
It's weird how Adriana's relation to the Aprile family is highlighted via Richie's protective stance with her to Chrissy but after Richie's out of the picture she just kinda didn't matter all that much. I was even expecting Adriana and Ro to be much closer but even that didn't play out.
Once Jackie Sr died Ro was pretty much out of the mob talk loop. Sure she was w/ Ralphie for a little while, but I think she just focused more on her personal life instead. Plus what is considered close relations gets a bit fuzzy in Italian families. For instance, Dickie, Chrissy's father, was Tony's uncle on his Mom's side which would really make Tony, Chrissy's cousin, but b/c he's so much older than Chrissy he formally is his "uncle". So while Richie considers Adrianna his "niece" that very well could be in the same vain w/ Richie considering himself an uncle by virtue of being so much older than her.
@@battaglino77 Liz LaCerva was born Liz Aprile. She was Jackie Sr. and Richie’s baby sister, so Richie was legitimately Adriana’s uncle. I get your overall point though.
It wasn't a bullet that killed Richie Aprile, it was pure irony.
The guy makes overt threats to other family associates who he thinks are being violent with their women, because in his mind their relationship is somehow his business if they're not married.
Ends up getting shot dead in his own house by the same woman he beat on constantly, and who he was never married to. You gotta hand it to the guy, he lived a life and died a death even a poet couldn't have dreamed up.
When Silvio took the handoff from Tony, that should have been enough for Richie to know to back off until the right time, maybe at the Bada Bing office. Richie's "oh poor me" attitude from his 10 years stretch and his fucked up hot temper is what got him killed by Janice. It was always just a matter of time and when David Chase needed a season ending killing, poor Richie had to go. Oh, those writers have so much power!!
