  • This film shows the landscape between Castle Hohenstein and the Emperor Monument at the Kyffhäuser Hills. In between there is the old Stollberg, a range of hills in the Southern Harz, where the company Knauf operates an open cast mining. As this area is exploited by mining, people are only permitted to enter the area only on designated hiking trails, e.g. the Gipskarst-Wanderweg (gypsum karst hiking trail). Due the comprehensive re-cultivation and the limited access by man a retreat for rare plants, butterflies and endangered species like wildcat and lynx came into being during the past 20 years.
