If we can’t get sports wagons anymore, sports hatches will have to do. I got this exact model over the very good Mazda 3 (too small) and Honda Civic, (noisy, a few bad owner reviews and wretched dealer network). This is a solid daily driver with a responsive drivetrain (my first CVT and it works great), comfortable, roomy, rides and handles well and excellent safety tech. Checks most every box. I’ve got a WRX wagon for a more engaging drive.
This is my first review of yours I’ve seen. You are great and have subscribed. I’m excited to see other reviews. I live in Southern California and drive a 4Runner, I’m looking for a practical daily driver with high end mpg, the 16-17 mpg is killing me. Don’t get me wrong I love my 4Runner and it’s probably the best vehicle I’ve owned, sacrifice mpgs for everything else. 200k+ miles and still going strong.
It depends on the manufacturer. Toyota and Subaru make decent CVTs but once you hop in a Nissan you'll understand. I've never driven anything that awful before and since.
It is crazy in 2024, we sit around and sip $5 flavored coffee calling a $30K any car affordable. I like the car but I am too old that I remember how much cars used to cost....
I like it, but the RS trim is too pricey. That’s the only trim I would want so for me, that’s is a no go. For that much money, the new awd prius makes way more sense
I could see the 2.0L in the price leader base model, but too bad they dont put the 2.5L in the "Sport". The RS is definitely the way to go if you can swing it. Nicely optioned, and you can still get it under 30K if you can find (or order) one without the option packages.
Tom, your time at New York Times reminds me of their style book: To “beg the question”means to beg your listener to agree with your own already-decided-upon answer. I believe what you mean here is to “raise the question.” NYTimes, can’t beat ‘em!
Subaru owners can make excuses for the CVT all day, but the fact remains, that until you drive one, you can’t truly appreciate how intolerable it is. I mean you can used to it, but then you get into a dual clutch and you’re like OMG what lethargic, rubbery garbage.
When this first came out, I seriously wanted one. Fully loaded like this, or the Blue Sapphire Pearl. I could do without the sunroof. The snow is not a problem, since I live in Honolulu, HI 👋. The only real hesitation is if the display electronics go wacky, as some reports on earlier models. Otherwise, so much tech, and checks all the boxes, including the stereo, but I will probably getting something maybe not as exciting, but even more dependable and reliable from my list. But otherwise, I like everything about it. 👍 *And 😺 people would buy this, too...
We had a saabaru. Loved it. By the time it came to replace it, Subaru had killed off the wrx hatch. We got a focus hatch instead which is doing well (it's my wife's daily and she will only drive manuals). I would have gotten one of these, but oh well.
Well, you made the right choice because those focuses are extremely reliable the engine that is the powershift transmission of course not that thing is a piece of crap. My mother-in-law has had her transmission or TCM or clutch packs done three times and she had 60,000 miles and drives it like 20 miles a day. Whenever I had them as rentals, I always had issues and on the hills they would roll back and drive while trying to accelerate. I happen to like the transmission when it is working, right it ships very fast. And the titanium model is excellent. Handle super well.
And I loved those Saab 92x’s. I thought they looked really cool and Saab styling looked great grafted on a Impreza wagon, especially with the two-tone seats
It has more room than the Mazda 3, and, IMO, a more practical hatchback. (I know the M3 has a hatchback, but I just cant get behind the styling with the huge rear quarter panels.) Granted at least the "Sport" Impreza should have the 2.5L. The 2.5L in the Subaru is technically less powerful than the standard Mazda engine, but only by a few horsepower, and I doubt one can tell the difference in normal driving. The turbo CX-30 is cool, but the price has crept up to 35k or more. I have a 2019 Impreza and like it a lot. Unfortunately the Mazda 3 with AWD and the advanced driver assistance suite was not available when I bought my car, or I would have given it a close look. I do think Mazda has held the line on prices better than Subaru.
You can get 40mpg @ sea level elevation no problem with this car if it has the 2L engine & CVT. I calculated that tank for tank fill up at 42mpg going the speed limit and not cargo on the roof in clear sunny weather with low humidity (no AC use). Did a similar small road trip with a Crosstrek in Florida that has the 2L & CVT. When hyper-mile that Crosstrek going the speed limit and no cargo ...the best I could get at sea level elevation was 35-36.5mpg.
Honestly, this car isn't that bad. The 2.5 is a good motor and is a good fit for this car. I don't mind the styling and it's even grown on me more. For me, at least, the only thing that really would have sold me was if it were offered in manual. I know manuals are going to way of the dodo and only offered on the high end (which is far out of reach now with how dealerships are jacking up prices). But I think it would have made for a fun grocery getter.
You obviously do not have much experience driving on ice. Wet leaves ate nit even close to as slick. Maybe as slick as mushy snow but nit ice. Even good awd does very little on ice. Winter tires help, but still, there is a lot of spinning wheels and sliding.
True, tires make a huge difference. I grew up in Minnesota where we liked to say it's all-wheel drive, not all-wheel stop. The weather conditions hover around freezing in the PNW, it can be icier than the Land of 10,000 Lakes. So I have some chops. And wet leaves can indeed be as slippery as ice in some circumstances. The leaves from the very large trees on our street have caused dozens of crashes. People don't recognize the threat until it's too late.
This car makes zero sense when you can find a CPO Mazda3 Turbo for ~$25k that has standard AWD, a proper automatic torque converter transmission, 250HP, & 320LB-ft, along with a much more modern interior & better reliability.
One thing I wish you would add in your reviews is whether one can turn the "accessory" screen off. Of course, we'll need to leave a screen on if it contains driving instruments, but otherwise, the status of accessories, navigation, etc.should be able to be turned off, leaving the screen completely dark. Two reasons: 1) distractions, 2) night driving. Thanks!
0-60 in 8 seconds? Meh, anything over 6.5 seconds is unacceptable for a $30k plus car. Should have given it at least 220hp and a manual option. Not a horrible car, but nothing to be too excited about.
If it weren’t for the low ground clearance (roads I use most of the time have speed humps because people are driving too fast on these roads), I’d get one but looking more towards the Crosstrek.
