Thank you for the video Frank. My Oneway hollowing system just came in today, an almost 7 month delay from date of order. Due to COVID I was told. Your video is appreciated.. Dont understand why Oneway hasn't produced a video to show set up and use. You did an amazing job. Thanks again Greg Duquette
That is a crazy long time to wait. I have been using it quite a bit and night extra cutters and lasers. I did talk to oneway directly and also said they should have a video, at least Kevin at oneway did review my video and made a few suggestions before I posted it. Later I found out that the small set screws holding the laser loosen up so I put the purple (low strength) loctite 222 on the threads and that is enough to prevent them from loosening up. Good luck
thanks, i hope you like it. i have had a lot of use out of it…. just makes the whole hollowing process easier on your arms and with the laser it is easier to get consistent thickness without measuring so often.
Thanks, yes I had used hollowing systems in the past and I purchased this one since it seemed robust and well thought through. It did not come with much in the way of set up and use instructions and I thought it would be worthwhile to help out Oneway and also for people who might need help with how it all works.
After a real nasty catch in a deep hollow form today, I’ve decided to invest in a system. Your video was very helpful in helping me make the decision to purchase from Oneway. Keep up the good work!
thanks, glad it helped you and now good luck with your hollowing adventures. I did buy some extra lasers from Oneway, as they do tend to get shook up a lot and then stop working.
Thank you Frank, your video comes right on time for me. It's the first one I found on the Oneway system. I turn with a Oneway 1640 lathe and had two finalists on my hollowing system list: Lyle Jamieson's and Oneway. Comments I had read were about the laser light that was not very good and the set screws that moved out with the vibrations, but these dated 6 ou 8 years ago. I guess Oneway solved that issue since. I also intended using eventually a camera system but the rotating laser holder seems to make the camera system useless. This video really helps me in my last analyses.
Thanks Alain, I actually have the Jamieson system at my place in Florida, but at my northern home I just had an old home made system very similar to the Jamieson system (it actually uses the Jamieson 3/4 bar and cutter). I like both the Oneway and Jamieson systems. The laser setup and functionality is much better for the one way system. I can see how the laser set screws could vibrate loose and have not used it long enough to know if it will be a problem , so I will wrap them tightly in black electrical tape which should prevent the problem. I do have a camera system on my SIMON Hope hollowing system and I like it, but the oneway laser is simpler, less costly and kind of does the same thing. Good luck.
Thank You Frank for the informative video on this system. Personally, I have mixed feelings when it comes to 'advanced technology'......it takes the fun out of it.....for me.
Thanks. I have a tennis elbow problem and if I hollow with hand tools it gets really sore, so this is a good solution for me when I am doing larger pieces
Replace the laser with an endoscope. Hook the endoscope up to a tablet. Use an erasable marker to mark on the tablet screen the point of the cutter. You will then have a reference of the cutter while you hollow. This is a major improvement that will save you tons of time realigning the marker(laser)
Hello, curious on why you chose Robust over Oneway. I'm Canadian so I'm worried my bias might influence my judgement because I really like the Oneway. But I am a very novice turner so I don't know much. Great videos BTW, much appreciated.
Thanks for the note, at the time I purchased the Robust the US dollar was at a good rate and this was a very slightly used showroom model so I got a bit of a discount as ell. I also liked some of the design features like a movable headstock and a pivot away tailstock. Today, if I was buying a high quality top end lathe, I would be inclined to get the Oneway lathe because at least here in Canada, the price is much less for basically the same capacity/quality of machine. Both are great machines, if I could, I would have one of each 😀
Thanks, it looks big on the lathe, but the main parts do not actually take up that much room. If you get the system, make sure you get the 1” bar. The 5/8 bars are ok for small stuff but the 1” bar is much more rigid. The cutters are all HSS so easy to sharpen.
Have you had any p[roblems with your laser? My started flickering and eventually just quit. Oneway sent me a new one with an adapter. Samething. Didn't last long before it quit. About 45 mins and it doesn't work anymore. Looking for a replacement that will last and fit in the system.
The laser I have loosened up a bit where the cap screws onto it to hold the battery. I just put some tape on it so it does not wind off and loosen during hollowing and that seems to help, but yes, with all the vibration the laser does seem to be vulnerable to failure. I am still using the original one that came with the system, but it is on its last leg. I also heard there was a problem so I purchased 4 backup lasers from them. I tend to do most of my hollowing without the laser and then just put the top bar/laser assy on when I am getting to final thicknesses.
Frank Didomizio I didn't think to wait until almost finished hollowing to put on the laser. Should help it last longer. So far I can barely get through one vessel before it quits. Thank you for replying.
Thanks, I have never used a lathe with speed readout and my Robust does not have it, but I am guessing my turning speed is somewhere between 800 and 1200 RPM. On their website, Oneway says that you can go in 9" with the standard 5/8" bar, but I think that is really pushing the limit. It does come with a 1" bar and I think that would be good up to a 12" deep hollow form. Any deeper than that and I think you would need a larger dia cutter bar..
Thanks. Sometimes I do a bit of rounding on the bandsaw, but I have done so many large pieces on my heavy Robust lathe I do not find the roughing out process is that hard on me. I am mostly starting with wet wood so easier to do the rounding and rough shaping.

Well, I didn't get it last Christmas but I finally pulled the trigger on it. It should be here soon!

This is quite a system Frank. Looks cool.
Thanks
I've yet to attempt hollow form, but this system looks like the way to go! Thanks for offering such detailed instructions!

@@frankdidomizio It's on my Christmas wish list now.. lol

Thanks Sean, it sure makes deep hollowing easier and safer for sure…..good luck.
Thank you very much Sir. I'm planning on acquiring one this winter. Your presentation is very helpful.
Thanks
Great job
Thanks
Nice job like your videos
Thanks Sam
Great Video Frank, You covered everything perfectly
thanks

i just got this system did help me i did wonder how to take laser off and on without adjusting the laser again

Hey, great idea, can you recommend a good endoscope that works with a standard IPad.

Very well explained, thanks Frank, i might need a bigger shop just to house thing but it seems very nice ;-)

Frank Hollow form looks Great, the system looks OK but expensive
thanks, actually it’s one of the less costly hollowing systems out there.
Very informative video. Thank you. Question: what speed did your turn? Is there a limit for this One Way system.
Thanks, I have never used a lathe with speed readout and my Robust does not have it, but I am guessing my turning speed is somewhere between 800 and 1200 RPM. I would have cut the out-of-shape piece round on the bandsaw rather than punish myself by turning away all of the excess.
Thanks. Sometimes I do a bit of rounding on the bandsaw, but I have done so many large pieces on my heavy Robust lathe I do not find the roughing out process is that hard on me. I am mostly starting with wet wood so easier to do the rounding and rough shaping.
