    Hi Brandon, thanks for this video, I currently own all three of them plus a few more higher income funds HDIV & HYLD as well. I was going to retire at the beginning of this year using the traditional 60/40 asset allocation portfolio of growth etfs and I am glad it did not use all my capital to purchase growth etfs. Image pulling out your monthly budget on any investment that is really down? Yikes. I am restructuring my portfolio to be about 35 % growth etfs that pay small distributions ( with future growth) and 65% higher dividend quality etfs that pay a good amount. I wish you and your dad would address some of your investment advice and strategy to ' what if I am ready to retire this year' sort of idea. I think it's completely different or perhaps I am missing something. Thanks for all your great content ! Keep them coming.

    Thx nice video. The first 2 funds seem to be of higher quality than the last one ..... to me, a high % of ROC distribution is an issue not so much for tax reasons (which it is) but more importantly, it's a sign that the distributions are really not sustainable, that's the bigger concern

  • @danjennings4700
    @danjennings4700 2 роки тому +1

    Re EIT, I think you missed discussing the "good" part of ROC, i.e. it is an allocation of income for tax purposes. Some forms of income when distributed must be ROC and not capital gains, etc. Therefore, ROC distributions are not necessarily a sign of the fund "returning your own money" (which is a common myth that investors will claim).

    • @beaviswealth
      @beaviswealth  2 роки тому

      Hi Dan. Not sure of your sources, but no matter how you slice it, ROC is a return of your own money. Call it 'capital', or whatever, but it's not coming from anything the investment itself is producing. Yes, the tax treatment is different, but that falls back to the fact that you're getting back what you put in, hence you don't get taxed on it again. - Marc

    • @danjennings4700
      @danjennings4700 2 роки тому

      Somehow my original reply disappeared. Marc, I disagree. Sometimes, certain types of income in an etf (such as loss carryforwards) must be classified as ROC. But I do agree that a fund that grinds down NAV by issuing distributions like ROC is not a good thing.

    • @MegsCarpentry-lovedogs
      @MegsCarpentry-lovedogs Рік тому +1

      @@beaviswealth Marc, your reply is solid, as usual. Glad you picked up on this comment from Dan. Recently you did an informative video on income tax treatment of investments in RRSP's, TFSA's and non registered accounts. I was wondering if you would consider expanding your topic to consider talking about this issue, or myth, of "good ROC" vs "Bad ROC." The good and bad words are being used on one YT channel and yet not explained well, or to your professional standards. As a passive investor, with a mix of individual stocks, ETF's and split corps, the taxation of these investment vehicles is a priority to understand. I hold most in a non registered account because the rrsp and tfsa is maxed out with little cash on hand to buy significant amounts of shares. Using a non registered account for most of my investing means I hone in diligently when you prepare a presentation on taxation treatment of investments. I wonder if showing how taxation treatment is between say HDIF vs HDIV would interest you, Marc? Yes, the taxation treatment is listed on a spread sheet on each of these sites, Harvest and Hamilton, but your magic insight and expertise to explain their ROC, and clarify this "good vs bad" ROC myth feels important to clarify. Whoosh! A bit of a long comment but I so enjoy making suggestions for your consideration....maybe like you did last time, taking a vote by looking at the "like"' button about this topic might be considered again? I feel I am not in a "niche" and that there are others who would appreciate your clarification and expertise with your talented way of presenting💯 Cheers from Atlantic East Canada.

      From what I understand you’ll get some but not all of the growth but you’ll get more income than you would have if you just held the stock. The most important decision you need to make when deciding on these types of funds is what your investment objective is? If it’s immediacy of income then these are for you. If it’s growth then no you’re not maximizing growth with these funds.

    So for the harvest ETF paying out 8.5 points ... Lets say I have an LOC that charges me 6.5 % and harvest is paying 8.5% ... wouldn't it make sense to take like $10K out of my LOC and put it into HDIF and collect the 2% monthly compounded rate ???
    Or is my simpleton math missing something here ?
    $10K would buy 1111 shares (ish given the $9 price ) which is Way over the DRIP amount needed
    What am i missing here???

    • @beaviswealth
      @beaviswealth  2 роки тому +4

      The math sounds ok, however a couple of things jump out at me. In your scenario you're not addressing the inherent risk that leverage brings to the equation. If the value of the fund drops, you still owe the money. If you need, for any reason, to raise funds or sell the investment, the debt doesn't go away. Leverage substantially increases risk. The second thing that you need to also need to be prepared in the event a distribution (or a few distributions) aren't paid, for whatever reason. If you don't have sufficient cash flow from other sources to service the debt, that will lead to a problem. Disclosure: I haven't read the prospectus for HDIF, but I'm assuming the distributions are an objective of the fund, but that they're not guaranteed. I'm open to being corrected on that if anyone knows the answer.) To conclude, leveraging to buy an already leveraged product introduces a much higher level of risk that you need to consider. - Marc

    I'm a huge proponent of passive income investing which represents a significant portion of my overall portfolio. I particularly like the covered calls income ETFs as they generate higher yields at lower risks due to covered calls. The ones you mentioned are great plus others such as Canoe EIT Income, Diversified Financial from Quadravest, and a new slate of funds from Hamilton (HYLD, HDIV) which are similar to the HDIF which is a basket of other covered call ETS into one single fund.

    • @hans5307
      @hans5307 2 роки тому

      I looked at HDIF, HYLD and HDIV as well. HDIF is my pick as it has no extra management fee as do HYLD and HDIV. And with HYLD and HDIV you will see a larger ROC thus depressing the NAV. HDIF is my choice.

    HDIF is great !

  • @TheTttooom
    @TheTttooom 2 роки тому +6

    Small criticism, you should do some more insight to at least provide the proper distribution yield. For HDIF, the 8.5% says target yield, that is not the actual yield. Does not change much in terms of the content, but you would expect those details to be accurate nonetheless. Makes you take everything else with a little grain of salt you know. Cheers.

      @@yesloww It is still a new fund. Wealthsimple calculates the rate based on their historic payouts, since the fund has only paid once they are only calculating the yield based on that 1 month or (1/12 of the actual yield). It is a flaw in their application.

    Yes, but they are not a true dividend stock, limited capital appreciation. The etf reduces your adjusted cost base and portion return of your capital back. Ok, in a down market or trading sideways. Pure play US bank is ok now as Powel just increase bank rate.

      This is the yield of the monthly dividend, when you multiply thé 0,07$ dividend by 12 month it give around 0,84$ annualy, the 8,5% yield is annualy

People will search /find Adrian's if they want to invest solely for"" income"" and not care about capital appreciation.

    Hi brandon,great video,I actually own HDIF and Canoe EIT,I started small,buying a few shares with the dividends received from my common stocks. Then I went big last week and bought a huge chunk in each. I was entirely focused on divdend growth before, then discovered the income funds through adriano.s videos. I'm trying now to do a mix between income investing and dividend growth with the goal to focus more on income as I get closer to retirement,

These EFT suggestions fit what I am doing inside my TFSA and the holdings are not critical to my lifestyle. Meaning I can tolerate some risk without ending up with sleepless nights. Thanks for the great suggestions.

    FOLKS:
    I dont own EIT, never have, never will - however I did own a fund like this from Middlefield in about 2002. The dividend was good (bout 8%) but the NAV kept declining, and eventually the company cut the dividend. The ROC components of the dividend was quite high. Does this sound familiar?
    EIT today is earning about 2.5% on the investment portfolio (2.6 B$) or about $68 M$. Not too bad at all. They collected another $230 M$ from the sale of shares (2023) Then they proceeded to pay out about $201M$ in dividends. So the dividends were composed of stock earnings (2.5%), sale of new shares and some capital gains.
    The question is - how long will people continue to purchase shares in a company that is not earning the dividend. Where are these investors coming from - there are a lot of them.
    How does this game end?
