I read somewhere that around those times, “Jazz” as a verb was also a synonym of (and excuse my language) “fuck”. We Jazz June…. could equal to “we have sexual relations with June”. June was also a popular name back then. I’d still say, don’t have this in mind unless you find a source that is reliable and backs you up with this statement hahah. In addition, when it comes to Jazz and this poem. Please don’t forget the most important part: this poem is written in a way to resemble the jazz rhythm you can find in Jazz music since this was a big part of the African American identity. Gwendolyn manages to break with the classical structure and subliminally give credit to a certain identity.
I think it depicts the cultural and socio economical context of Afro Americans in those times. Imo, poem is much more than just some strings of words. It is just incredibly hard and meticulous to find the intricacies of it. I’ve had to read many studies and papers for uni to get a grasp of how resourceful and deep this poem can be.
