I’m glad somebody gave Jhené Aiko flowers; her unique contribution to R&B was groundbreaking. In many ways, she’s a branch off the Aaliyah family tree with her style and vocal approach, yet still very signature to herself. Now, artists like Mariah The Scientist have also tapped into that exact same blueprint, so Tink highlighted a great point. 😂

Y’all can debate about the “blueprint” but Jhené’s influence is undeniable. She was the only female artist that was at the forefront of the R&B Mixtape wave that male r&b artists ushered in (Chris, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Weeknd). Those mixtapes/EPs helped old and new female r&b artists get their music out when labels were shelving them.
