Omg!! I will purchase my ticket this Wednesday, April 20th!! How exciting!! I tried to pre-pay my ticket, but it isn't an instantaneous purchase. A timer showed my payment wouldn't go through for around 18 minutes, and it shows the seconds ticking off. So I halted the process but will try again on Monday, maybe in the middle of the night when it won't be so busy.
Please don’t apologize for how you repurpose things in your home. You rescued that mirror and gave it new purpose. It looks wonderful keep up the good work. Love to you and Kim and hope you had a happy Easter🐰💐👏
I agree, the repurposing of the mirror is wonderful, and it's going to look so great over the sink! It wasn't a museum quality piece, and you needed it to function. And you don't owe us apologies.
Caleb, changing out the medicine cabinet for the mirror was a really good decision. The fact that the mirror had already been tampered with should tell you it's okay to further change it. I for one, think that making it fit your needs is what you should do. This powder room is already looking amazing and I look forward to seeing it completed!
This is your house and I love every small detail like this mirror that has some "your addition" like you're creating your own history of this home so do not be afraid of offending us by adjusting old stuff to fit your home better. It makes it more Yours.
I'm glad you decided to place the cabinet elsewhere, it was too large to be over the sink. Your replacement mirror is too large as well. There already is a lot of dark woods in that little powder room, adding more is not a good idea. An oval mirror with a simple gilt frame (not too heavy or ornate) would contrast nicely with all the dark woods, and pick up on the shape of the sink. You could still use your project mirror in a bedroom, which would be more appropriate. You're doing a great job.
Yes, I saw that suggestion about a mirror being there instead and I agreed with that. However, do you want wet hands dripping across your beautiful tile floor? Maybe put towel bar next to the sink and a little table or something under the medicine cabinet?
I thought the medicine cabinet would be problematic, but I won't be living in the house, so I left comments about it alone. I'm glad others said something, though, because I was a little worried that the wall with the towel rack would look empty. The new mirror and relocation of the cabinet is a perfect fix. I love it!
Never apologise for repurposing a piece. It gives it a new lease of life and looks amazing to boot. I think you deserve a pat on the back Caleb for a job well done!
Caleb, you so impress me - an artist with just enough of a businessman’s touch. “These should be beautiful, but should also be functional and consistent.” I like it.
Of the shows I watch on UA-cam u and Kim put out the most, sometimes 3 a week. And I just want to let u2 know it's very much appreciated. It's awesome letting us ride along on ur journey !!!
A beautiful mirror yes. I am more of a matchy match person and the window frame color (to me) clash's with the rest of the wood finishes. (Opinions are like butts, everyone has one. I'm no exception!) Lol
I definitely think trimming the bottom of the mirror is the way to go. I think the gap where the mirror is would look strange once it's mounted above the dado rail, and of course the sconces will look better as well. Having the entire mirror bottom frame surface in contact with the dado rail will look much more intentional.
I'm going out on a limb here. The mirror is beautiful! Love what you did. I feel that it is too large for that space. It's a bit squished next to the wall. I feel that an oval mirror or some smaller mirror would work better. That way the sink itself will have more weight. That and it would have a bit more space around the wall sconces.
The mirror looks too big, yes. Also the placement bothers me. Can a person using the sink actually use this mirror, or will they just be looking at the front of their trousers? I think a simple framed mirror would make sense here.
Caleb, you amaze me with all your vision and talents! I gave a sigh of relief that you replaced the medicine cabinet with a flat mirror. Now the lovely glass globes stand a chance. You did a stellar job on the mirror revamp! So creative!
Watching this I went like.. wait, this was what I suggested! 😎 Happy to contribute to the house, I think this is the first time anybody has ever listened to my suggestions on youtube. (I’m sure I’m not the only one who suggested this but I am taking partial credit haha) The mirror looks fantastic, can’t wait to see the final result
At 7:56, the music sounded like a cowboy on his horse, traveling a long distance, perfect for Kaleb & Kim, who have also come a long way with this restoration. The mirror = perfect. I am crazy about it!!!
Kaleb, it is your house, you are doing the work, and you have the knowledge. You should never feel you need to apologise or explain yourself or your choices. You dont owe anyone that. Fork the haters
I find that your bathroom stain colors are clashing with each other and the wall print color. As an artist I am confident you will figure it out, so you can keep a little more harmony in such a small space.
The little side shelves were most likely to hold a lighting source - oil lamps or candle sticks. My grandparents had a dresser that held a tilting mirror and there were small side shelves for small oil lamps. I have the little shelves and use them to display figurines. Rather than replace them, perhaps you can find small rosettes to cover the holes. When I think of furniture from this era, I think of walnut.
Caleb so happy you decided to repurpose the antique mirror to put above the sink. The medicine cabinet will look much better on the opposite wall by the light switch. God Bless, Kathy
Mirror looks great! All rickety in the corner of the antique store with no matching dresser, it's just a piece of junk. Now it's the 'star' of the bathroom!
Another beautiful piece well finished. My one thought is while folks thought the medicine cabinet was to big my fault with it it didn't have a mirror. I think a medicine cabinet is a better choice over the sink and a towel bar closer to the sink also. But that's just my worthless 2 cents. But it sure is coming along and is gorgeous!
I agree. The mirror Looks really good and better decision then the other cabinet. To bad you couldn’t find a simple square, oval or round antique mirror by its self to put there. That’d be ideal and look amazingly simplistic.
As some of the never before finished parts appear to have a slight green hue, I think that is poplar wood. Poplar was used quite a bit for it's ability to accept stain colors, especially to blend with other wood species. Hope the helps. You're doing a fabulous job.
I have a mirror frame from my great grandfather, originally it was incredibly decorative with that Victorian twill, but in the 1930’s it was pulled apart, the twill removed including decorative shelf supports, and plain straight edges reattached. In the 1980’s my mother found it in my great grandparents attack, found the original twilly bits and got a craftsman to pull it apart and put it all back together as it was originally. This Segway was brought to you by noticing the original shelf supports that look almost identical to the ones that were put on my great grandfathers mirror.
Kaleb, you are so great at problem solving and making things work. Don't feel guilty about modifying the mirror, it had already been messed with. Better that it has new purpose than being junked. I so wish I could come to the house tour but we are taking a trip just a month later and travel money is tight. Hope the tour will become an annual thing.
Long time watcher, first time commenter! Your channel and renovation progress is SUCH an inspiration. Watching this home be brought back to its glory and seeing how much love and care you pour into each project is truly aspirational. My partner and I have been planning on purchasing a historic house to restore and make into our forever home, and watching your hard work turn out so beautifully only gets us more excited to embark on a restoration journey of our own. I wish I weren't on the opposite end of the country because that House Tour & Art Show sounds like an amazing experience! Thank you for these videos, very much looking forward to the next installment!
Mirror looks great! I forgot to point out that the cabinet would have been normally placed off to the side instead of right above the sink. I think it'll look great with a towel bar underneath. I like the mirror and you're right that those styles are a dime a dozen so no harm done there. Bathroom is shaping up and is going to look amazing when done!
A mirror over the sink is better than a medicine cabinet without a mirror. The mirror could go higher up and potentially you could put a shallow shelf underneath and put small items on it. It would give you more counter space.
I don't care what anyone else says, it's your house. You do as you please. No two people would do the project quite the same way. You two are doing a great job. I'm anxious your you to be able to move in, so you're not having to pay rent on top of paying for the house. Keep up the good work. We're rooting for you.
I totally approve of the mirror. It looks like a mirror that would have been made for a bathroom of the time. Eastlake is my favorite style I have many items of furniture from this era.
*Kia ora JAKE, Happy 13th birthday for today young fella. Best wishes for this special day in your life. Hopefully you are gonna get the day off school as you are now officially a teenager. 21st April 2022 NZ time. From your kiwi friend in Auckland NZ*
Loving the re purpose of the lovely mirror, such a great idea 🙌 I have used Danish oil myself many times and it leaves a wonderful finish, I was told about this product by a friend of mine whom has been a cabinet maker for nearly 50 years, it's not failed me once. All coming together beautifully now
Looks great and that is all that counts! You re-used an old piece and gave it more life! Anyone who says they don't like it, their comment is irrelevant !
The mirror looks beautiful! I discovered Danish oil when I wanted to bring life back into my great grandmother’s sewing table. Wow. I really like your new repurposed mirror! It’s going to look grand above the sink. I also like that you will still be putting up the previous cabinet.. The powder room is really nice. I love beadboard. My Victorian had beadboard in the kitchen and maids bedroom. My neo classic house had beadboard in the butlers pantry and refrigeration room and also one of the servents bedrooms. Nice mirror .I do love the other mirror also but it was a little tight with the lights. Great job you two!
I'm not very familiar with refrigeration rooms. Where are they normally located in a house (I'm assuming just off of the kitchen or in the basement), and how does the cooling work in them?
@@Clarinetboy82 Hi, Refrigeration rooms are often in basements, Mine in two different historic homes were located adjacent to the butlers pantry and kitchen, I may not have the appropriate description for them but during the days of big huge wooden refrigerators cooled by ice they were separate from the kitchens with exterior doors into them for the ice man. The idea of the sconces either side of the mirror was nice but it would have only really worked if the sink was in the middle of the wall, so much stuff just wouldn’t fit into the corner. The new mirror looks great and spreading everything else around the room will look much better. The room’s getting better and better every day.
Enjoying the process with you! Great idea to have a handy 1/2 bath. I admire all the effort to keep it close to the original era fixtures and that stunning wall paper!
I'm finally all caught up on the episodes 👏👏😂, being OCD like I am, I will be waiting for the finishing touches to be completed 😂 but the washroom looks spectacular, great job🥰
Try hanging the mirror atop the wainscoting which should give you more space for the gaslights and that way you won't have to cut the bottom off. People that are taller will be able to see themselves in the mirror as well since you've taken the swivel away.
Hey sometimes you have to do what you need to do to make it work for what you need.So it's looking good to me.You are definitely a master at repurposing things.I would love to come and see the place but I'll just have to watch your videos. Can't wait to see what's next.
My husband says Danish oil is similar to linseed oil, a drying oil, but that Danish oil drys down into the grain rather than just on the surface. Danish oil is his fave to use.
NOW your talking! The mirror choice modification is fantastic and fits well with good ol American ingenuity! and glad you listened to fans...just as beds weren't under windows, medicine cabinets weren't over sinks 😊 Sending love! looking great!
I would hang he mirror a bit higher. Maybe even sitting on top of the wood paneling. The advantage is that you don't splash it with water when you wash your hand, saves you a lot of cleaning and keeps the wooden frame nicer. Sconces would fit better, too.
Love the mirror! In my humble opinion it’s perfect! You now have a Kaleb original in the beautiful old home! The idea of putting your personal touch is what restoring this old lady is all about. ❤️ Keeping with tradition is about putting something of yourself in the project. Keep up the great work! 🤗
I've seen some comments by folks worried about mismatched wood finishes. Personally I think we should wait and see how it all comes together. Also, you are using old, stripped woods with patches, different grain patterns, different wood varieties, etc. It can't be expected that stain will take the same way across everything. Nor do I think it needs to. Everything you've done has been done so lovingly and carefully. It will tell the story of your hands putting life into it.

A little hook for a hand towel takes care of that :-)

Try hanging the mirror atop the wainscoting which should give you more space for the gaslights and that way you won't have to cut the bottom off. People that are taller will be able to see themselves in the mirror as well since you've taken the swivel away.

What a wonderful idea to repurpose that beautiful wood.. Very creative and it looks amazing!

Wonderful work ! No complaints here. Awesome.
Really.....I liked the medicine cabinet
