Helene Floods Cut Off Access, Cell Signal To Western North Carolina

- Cell signal is hard to come by in parts of western North Carolina after Helene brought catastrophic flooding and cut off communities. FOX Weather Meteorologist Jane Minar describes the difficulty getting access to Boone, North Carolina and the damages she saw while reporting on the flooding.
We are in Cherokee County, the furthest most western county in the state and we were not affected by the storm, but also do not have cell service. Our local grocery stores are running low here due to all the warehouses being located in and around Asheville and not getting deliveries. The ramifications of this storm are so far-reaching, it's just unbelievable.
How far did you have to drive to get internet connection to post this comment?
I'm also in Cherokee County. In Andrews. We were so lucky not to have been affected too much, but the cell service and the 911 stuff are bad.
@@davergent1521Internet is still around here in Cherokee County. Some don't, but some do. Internet is kinda the only way some people can communicate.
Prayers wirh you.
@@davergent1521 I have at times in and out of disaster not had cell service but internet was fine. And I've had the reverse. If both of her services were out, you'd not see her posting.
Avery county is decimated. No cell or power. Only one remaining road. Landslides all over.
THANK YOU for reporting on Boone NC!!! My wife's grandparents are there and NOBODY has heard from them! He's on 'home dialysis'!
@@civildk9077 You might think about hiring a drone service that can carry a message to and from her grandparents
I hope they are ok!!!!
Best wishes!
prayers lifted up for them🙏
Where would you even begin to look with no cell service. Very few homes have been spared? I’m so sorry for your delayed reply from them.
@gloriagehring8676 You can probably call the county the community is located in to ask for information. They may have answers to that question. You may or may not be able to get through to the fire department or police in the area. I don't even know if it's a great idea to be calling them now. Will probably take a bit of time to know information. First responders will probably set up some communication resources.
It was terrifying. We will never be the same. Generational homes were lost, countless are homeless. Those who still have homes like me are turning into storm shelters for those we can help. No one was evacuated. No one was warned. We are still trying to hear from our families and friends who are stranded from roads washing away. Houses were washed completely away and slammed into bridges. Water poured into every room of my house. It lasted hours and hours, it felt like the longest day of my life. I’ve never heard a sound like that rain and wind. I’ve never seen something like what happened. More people need to know how badly we need help.
Are you in North Carolina?
how were you not warned. was it like the gatlinburg fires where the cell towers went down. and no one got warning.
You will rebuild. It will just take time.
@@thomasdunaway2573 Because everyone's focus was on Georgia. No one thought NC would be hit as hard.
@@thomasdunaway2573 no, we are still trying to figure out how. I guess it could just be that the impact was unexpected, but none of us up here were told it would be this bad. We were told a little rain. University classes were supposed to still happen. We also don’t really have a local news, it’s really rural in a lot of places. Everyone is trying to come up with theories as to how on earth we had no clue this was going to happen.
Footage from Chimney Rock is devastating. No word on Bat Cave. Yes, you read that right. All the little towns along the Broad/French Broad River...
@@bright_as_morning-nh9jl 🙏
My entire town was destroyed. We are small so we are low priority. They say it'll be a month before they get portable power production here @ soonest and no timeline whatsoever on restoring actual power. 80% loss of businesses. No water or power or phones. Didn't have cells till just a bit ago. We've been cut off completely. My subsection of the town was cut off completely by the river with our one road out. We still can't get out without hiking. No fema or national guard here yet. Big shout out to Oklahoma for sending search and rescue guys. They're about all that's showed up so far. People's food has went bad, no stores open for 50 miles. Some people may starve or contract dizease from contaminated water. Will be years before we come back.
Madison county NC. A small tn border community.
@@onceuponadime978 so sorry 😞
@@onceuponadime978 I hear you! We were without power iny small town 6 WEEKS after hurricane Ida. We are mostly subdivisions and so were low priority. How is the weather by you right now! The military should be helping, not good enough.
Presidential candidates need to focus on this and help!!!
Hurricane Helene 🌀 cuts off access, cell signal to the western in North Carolina 🇺🇸.
After Hurricane Katrina we couldn't make cell phone calls but we could text.
i wonder how it causes that
Yes that was before fifth generation technology aka 5G
Katrina did the same thing. Never has a hurricane caused a loss of cell AND landlines, but Katrina did for several weeks so I really feel for you.
Why are we not connected to starlink?

Where the hell is the governor to help the people of North Carolina,? Where is Joe Biden, or Kamala Harris ? Billions for Ukraine but no help or money for people in North Carolina
This administration only likes to help people from other countries. Not the USA!!
Some people has internet. I just heard from my niece in Asheville NC
That initial shot is what's left of the bridge from Chimney Rock, North Carolina to Lake Lure Hotel and looking back up the river from the bridge showing what is left of Chimney Rock village below the park. I recognize our mountains on the left. Chimney Rock and Bat Cave are gone.
Sad, Boone has such cool festivals! Good folk, good government, the complete opposite of Hendersonville. Hoping they rebound soon!

My sister has (or maybe had) a nice big place in the forest up a really steep curvy road there and I’m betting it’s history. I thought it would be a fire that got it, but looks like it will be a flood.
Our family is from all across NC and in GA and gulf side FL. My family in Boone and spent so many years going to Daniel Boone restaurant and supposed to go next month and we all for generations have been going to mass general store and tweetsie and just all over those mountians family and memories. We have home there and GA and will wait to find out damage and at my parents and others places there.

Why haven’t any forecasters mentioned Hurricane Michael which came in at 155 mph and wiped out Mexico City?
Maybe because Michael didn’t hit Mexico City. CDMX is still there!
😮
Helene didn't do this. The flooding started before Helene even hit Florida. The low pressure system that sat on us all last week did it.

Why don’t people leave their homes before storms like these roll through? There was plenty of warning. It just boggles my mind.

This is horrible. Terrible. My heart just aches for everyone caught in the path of these terrible storms. There will be more storms, more deaths, more grief if we don't elect a leader willing to do what's needed! The Democrat presidential candidate has a plan of action against climate change. The Repubican candidate doesn't even believe in it. It's OUR choice in November! My prayers tonight are for all in harm's way in this video.
The problem is people don't listen to weather forecasts or pay attention to weather. People are just living in their zone and are caught by surprise. Utterly unprepared.
