    I bought a craftabrew kit back when I wanted to try mead making for the first time. My experience was fantastic. My kit came with a broken carboy (no doubt the fault of the mailman.) I asked craftabrew for just a new carboy and they sent me a whole second kit. The instructions were perfectly clear, even though I knew nothing about brewing back then, and through the entire process there was never a single hiccup. I get to say that the first mead I ever brewed came out damn near perfect, and it started what is a legitimate hobby for me now. Craftabrew is a great option for someone learning to brew.

      I do completely agree with what you’ve said about it. Everything came out perfectly. The only thing I would say. Is what’re the measurements of the nutrient packets and yeast packet. Buying things on my own now, and not too sure what measurements we all used for the craft a brew kit.

    • @kristofen5741

      @@elitheking8886 that was my question process. I'm about to buy a kit and start the hobby fresh after watching and reading a ton, and I wish the size measurements were stated and not just "Add this packet". Seems like a way to isolate you to only buying the refill kits.

    • @LazyBoyA1
      @LazyBoyA1 8 місяців тому +5

      @@dklee1313 I haven't personally done it yet, but I plan on adding fruits to the secondary fermentation of my first batch and read some useful stuff. If you add fruit to the primary fermentation, most of the original fruit flavor is stripped, you are left with the fermented flavor of the fruit so if you like that specific fermented fruit taste go for it. Adding it in secondary makes the original's fruit flavor stay as it isn't going through the rigorous stage of primary fermentation, preserving the original fruity taste. You can add fruit in both first and secondary fermentation if you want a bolder fruity flavor. Then for sanitation I read to add Campden tablets to the mixture of honey, water and fruit then wait 24 hours to add your yeast for primary, as for secondary it seems debatable as it might not be necessary since the high alcoholic content and CO2 rich environment prevent most stuff from growing, some do say to sanitize in another container with water and Campden tablets just to be safe. Hope that helps and happy brewing.

    Story time!
    Tried mead for the first time at our local Renaissance festival last year (2023), and it was very good, but expensive. Looking online and at the liquor store, not much better, but my aunt was telling me that it's easy to make. Fast forward to christmas, she got me one of your kits!
    So, one year later, tried my brew for the first time after letting it sit for 6 months, and it turned out great! Did a spiced blackberry with cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Only thing is that it ended up being some 3% ABV. Still tastes great, but I can't wait to make more and try all sorts of wonderful combinations!
    And of course, thanks for the terrific video guide! For me and the way I learn,it's much easier than simply reading the instructions.

    Just bottled my mead, made with this kit. Overall I think it worked quite well. I found the bottling to be a bit cumbersome (looks like an auto-syphon would be easier). In the end I got out 3 beautiful bottles of mead, but the syphon got bubbles and stopped working for the last one. I attempted to do it again, but it stirred too much and I decided to throw it away (half a bottle). This was my first home brew, and the kit and this video definitely helped it. Looking forward to brewing my first cider now :)

    • @theastronomer5800

      Yes, the auto-siphon is a must. You can relax as it stops to flow when you move it off the bottom and take you time. Two people also helps a lot, as once can control the dept and title the carboy when you're near the bottom while the other bottles. I always have a small bottle left for the last bit as you'll always pull in some sediment.

    ( note this is not ideal it can give the wine unwanted flavors from the plastic if you do use a ballon make sure to clean it out with very hot water thoroughly.
    Also if you do not have the stuff to clean your utensils ( small amount of dawn soap litterly a spec ) clean it very very well after ( u can use ISO Alchol as well just make sure it's very clean no residual residue.

    instead of staggered nitrogen you could try to find a mixture of non-organic nitrogen (rapidly consumed) and organic nitrogen, like amino acids (consumed more slowly and produce more aromas), that way you have nitrogen that is easily accessible but also prevent all the nitrogen being consumed at the beginning of the fermentation. That's how they do it in wine making at least.

    I wish I'd seen this a few weeks ago! First time I tried a staggered nutrient schedule and I put the whole addition in at once at got the eruption! Didn't lose too much/make too much of a mess thankfully, but I do not recommend. Take BC's advice! Degas a lot first and then add the nutrients a teeny bit at a time!

    I've heard that you shouldnt use just water in the airlock. But to use either some sanitizer/water solution or a cheap alcohol like a clear rum because bugs can swim and survive in water and can get into your brew and infect it.

    Got your kit, followed everything as you instructed, ended up with basically vinegar based on taste, and mead was cloudy after 4 weeks of fermentation... Bottling process was also a pain in the ass, and I didn't manage to get the last 1-2 inches of the jar above the sediment...

    • @theastronomer5800
      @theastronomer5800 Місяць тому

      Hmmm, I never had a vinegar taste and I've made many mead. I keep it simple, don't add any chemicals. I use 1ga carboy, usually 1.5kg of honey, add water half way and put in yest, mix mix mix, add water to about 2" from the top and let it sit for 3 months. Of course it will be cloudy after 4 weeks, it has not degassed yet so yeast is being moved around by the CO2. Give it time :) I never bottle a mead before 3 months.
      When bottling it helps to have 2 people, and you want to tilt the carboy very gently near the end to about 45 degrees so you can get the most out. I usually put the last bit in a separate bottle as it will suck in some sediment, but my first bottles are crystal clear.

    Not sure if its the case with this sanitizer, but I wanted to mention that typically a "no rinse" sanitizer not only doesn't "have" to be rinsed, but it *SHOULD NOT* be rinsed, as the drying and evaporation is part of the sanitization process; not to mention that whatever you use to dry the equipment will introduce baterial contaminants and particulates.
    Another example of a "no rinse" sanitizer would be rubbing alcohol.

    Enjoyed your video and plan to watch more of your content after subscribing. Thought it might be a little easier to stir with a drill, or an old mixer, especially if you need to stir for several minutes. I've never brewed anything but plan on giving it a try since you make it look so easy.

    • @DarkSolidity
      @DarkSolidity Рік тому +1

      When the yeast has done its job, it’ll stop bubbling.

      When the bubbles go through the airlock like an air bubble through molasses, you're basically done. When you get into the hobby a bit more, you'll learn how to use a hydrometer for measuring gravity in order to determine alcohol content and when it's time to rack off of your primary fermentation vessel.

    • @tim-tim-timmy6571
      @tim-tim-timmy6571 Рік тому

      @@oliveprocessor3068 This is the correct answer. Bubbles don't mean anything. No bubbles can mean bad seal but still fermenting. Bubbles after the end of fermentation are just degassing. If your seal is good, you might look at your carboy for 6 months thinking it is still fermenting.

    • @ElessarEstel
      @ElessarEstel Рік тому +1

      Buy a hydrometer to use with this kit. They're not expensive and it's not hard to learn to use them. This kit, some honey, and a hydrometer is all you need to make a fantastic mead on your first try. That's how I started brewing mead and everything came out perfect even though I knew nothing at the time.
