I am converting to Catholic, but have yet to even begin RCIA. I am desperate, I am lost, and I am fumbling about trying to find my own way for now - and, coupled with other sources of divine inspiration I have found, these videos are helping me with my patience, my faith, and respect for those whom I would otherwise not respect much at all. Thank you, and all glory to God.
SilverStar830 I just converted this past easter. The whole journey, I felt the same as you do now. At some point along your journey though (for me it was confession and the scrutinies) you will have a moment of such gratitude and clarity in such a divine way that can’t even be described. Keep questioning, researching, and opening yourself up to let God in. Congrats on converting 😊
I appreciate how you break this down into "digestible chunks" as we say in the education world! Now I understand so much better why I have always struggled with respecting everyone! Thanks for the clarification and God bless you, Fr. Mike!
This is really well thought out. I’ve struggled with some people I need to respect, asking me to be a part of things I’m opposed to, and it’s hard to know the best way to say no. I’m Protestant but I’m finding more informative teaching here ...
I feel the same as you do. It's really hard to say "no" sometimes. Example...…..Asked to donate time and money to a certain charity that is not doing the right thing with funds. When I say "no I would rather be part of that project for personal reasons", people have a hard time respecting my reasoning.
Come home to Rome Sarah, you won't be dissapointed and if you want informative teaching, you'll have access to 2000 years of Saints and Tradition to compliment what Fr. Mike talks about.
It doesn’t matter what religion you feel you belong to Jesus loves us all😊 i love learning from those who have walked a different path. We’re all more connected than we are different.
@@BeatKiller81 I mean, that's wrong and intentionally uncharitable to others. Otherwise Jesus wouldn't have declared Himself to be The Way, the Truth, and the Light. That negates any religion not following Christ in at least some way, then the epistles dictate in which way He is to be followed to obtain and keep salvation. Anything outside that is damned.
Wow. Uncanny what you were talking about. I think the discussion about respect to the office versus respect to character is really helpful right now. Thank you!
Me too - it is so helpful to me too at this point in time in my work life. Thankyou so much you so called 'some guy' sitting in a chair infront of a fireplace. You crack me up!
I think that this is accurate. Respect doesnt equal letting people abuse their positions! Its similar to love. Love everyone for the sake of their humanity, but love also means correcting when they are doing something wrong, love is also the parent setting up rules and boundaries, and disciplining when those boundries are crossed. Its out of love and guidence, not anger
Thats the problem with people like you, you think you're EVERYONE'S parents when you're not. You dont want to treat anyone as equal, you want to lord over us with your holier than thou attitude setting your personal moral standards as law and punishing people who disagree with you. You dont understand love😒
Layla Li Yea no, that's not the case at all. Its not about being holier then thou when i disagree with someone. Lets say i have a friend who exhibits a biased attitude towards others. What would be more loving, letting them be, giving up hope, or try to talk to them from a place of help? What about a friend that recently got into drugs, would it be loving to coddle them and let them get deeper into drugs instead of doing what ever i could to get them out of it. If you think love is willingly letting your loved ones fall instead of helping correct them YOU are the one who doesn't understand love. I want whats best for my loved ones, i want them to have a good life. And it isnt one sided. In areas im wrong i want them to correct me. I want my loved ones to help me not enable me. Im not talking about little things and putting off that im better then them. Im not talking about judging another mother because she didnt Cosleep and i did. I understand every one is doing what they think is best, and its only when its obviously wrong that i try to interject at all.
You hit the nail on the head Fr Mike, often people throw away the baby with the bath water - I always try to remember no one is perfect but this doesn’t mean they have nothing valuable to offer. God doesn’t make junk. I really like the way you broke it down to 3 example. Very easy to remember - thank you!!!
As you spoke, I was reminded of Matthew 23:3 which says "So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach." God bless you Fr. Mike!

Father, you're videos are inspiring and thank you for your ministry. I will pray for you and your ministry. Having said that, and this is a little off topic, lately I feel like the Church is in a "tug-of-war", so to speak, with the current culture. Almost as if there is a game of one-upmanship between the two camps about what is ethical, acceptable, moral and "tolerant". I feel as if there are times when the Church tries to pander to changing cultural norms and has been leaning more "liberal" in order to gain "acceptance" among the non-Christian crowds. I think, more than ever, the Church needs to stand its ground, the clergy must not "bend the truth" in order to gain acceptance and the laity should be more bold in proclaiming the Gospel when confronted with teachings that are directly in contradiction to Church dogma. Tolerance and respect are different from truth and love. As telling the truth is both hurtful and loving; and loving someone, will at times, require admonition for their wrongful deeds.
I think what you're talking about came in the 1950s and really picked up steam in the 1960s. There are holdovers, but there is also a return to orthodoxy in places (like my diocese). At the same time, we're not talking about a false nostalgic orthodoxy -- we're not wooden saints. Our holiness is in living in our time, holding to the truth of the Faith in the culture we're in, not in an imagined past. We can't blame other people if we're not holy.
@@kimfleury I like what you said about 'being holy in our time' and it's hard to imagine what the past was like but the Truth never changes. God is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. I'm not trying to blame others for "not being holy," I'm simply saying that we should be steadfast in the Truth. We shouldn't have to walk on eggshells all day long, in order to avoid being "intolerant" toward people who choose not to believe in the Gospel. When the Truth "hurts" you're serving God; when word play is used to attempt to present the Truth in a "more polite" manner you're doing a disservice to you're neighbor and the Church.

I love the way you framed this topic. Somewhere along the way we have confused these common society understandings with a choice. I think you frame this so that people can understand that how we treat people shouldn't be according to our feelings at the time except in the case of earned trust. Thanks for putting this in logical language. Enjoy the eternal life you are living now! God bless.
Thank you brother Mike father Mike whatever you want to be called thank you for your words of wisdom. I see you as a perfect man. I'll be following you all the way to the day the Lord call me home. Brother in Christ Jesus.
It’s great that you explained what the reading of “do not do what they do”, actually means. I got distracted during the time I played a different Catholic video, and now it makes more sense.
Hi Fr Mike, I found you on UA-cam a few months ago & love all your videos. I was born & raised in a good catholic family. Now I'm in the process of of trying to build a relationship with God & learn more about our church. I love your positive energy, & your love for God, It exudes from you. You truly have a gift for making the teachings from the bible & the church relatable & easy to understand. You have a nice way of saying the "Hard or difficult" things people need to hear. You present those things with love & gentleness. I also love your sense of humor, gestures, funny voices & emotion. We are all truly blessed that God called you to be a priest & you said, "Yes." You are saving souls & bring souls to God. Please don't ever change & keep doing what you are doing.
I wish I new of a priest in my area like you. You have that unique combination of Orthodoxy and pastoralism. I would really like to have a priest to talk to about this scandal. Most of those that I know have no Orthodoxy. Pray that I find one.
Bud Askins actually the church encourages people to respect themselves and all life. I trust in going to confession to receive God’s mercy because I know I am sinful. I know when I do something that is wrong, but God always forgives if you just ask.
My thoughts after listening....maybe I don't have to respect on the 3rd level but I do have to love. This can be kind of tricky. I think the first level of respect lays down a great baseline for love though. It also came to mind that God always respects our freedom, even when we choose everything but Him. He does this because he desires our friendship and we must help draw others to that friendship as well - praying and sacrificing for them out of respect for what God is calling them to, out of the person God is calling them to be. Thanks for your effort to continue reaching out through these podcasts, know that I am praying for you every week- David
Yes Father. I agree with you. We should still respect others although we don't have to agree. Respect them regardless if they don't deserve it but because one should be respectful of other human beings. They too were created in the image and likeness of God. They too can repent and be forgiven!
Everyone deserves respect. The respect that he is talking about is popularity. To me popularity deserves less respect because it goes to the head of people and they get out of control. People are deluded by popularity, popularity does not take more effort, it takes less. Popular people are narssissitic, and deserve less respect. If you respect people who are not interested, the energy is lost.
I dont think you understood his message. Hes saying that even tho all men are created by god, you DONT have to tolerate rude behavior. You have a right to defend yourself and shouldnt feel for correcting them since itll benefit them
Right on, Fr. Mike. That makes a lot of sense, and clears up confusion with regards to respect. I could never reconcile the fact we are called to respect our elders whenever they were talking or acting in a manner not deserving of respect, but I really appreciate the way you broke the topic down and addressed forms of respect point by point. It is a lot clearer now.
This video answered the very question I was asking God today! Thanks be to God! Thank you for posting even though you were concerned it may now be a sensitive topic.
“The Church is intolerant in principle because She believes but tolerant in practice because She loves. The enemies of the Church are tolerant in principle because they do not believe but intolerant in practice because they do not love.” - Fr Réginald Garrigou-Lagrange
I'm getting old.... and am low on good food or vitamins etc so my mind isn't sharp now. I have to read this over and over because it has hit me in the head with such confusion! But I feel it's worth studying later on, soooo, thankyou.
This is what we should do in times of crisis in the Church is to Trust and Obey and serve only Him. Now therefore fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods which your father served beyond the River, and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. And if you be unwilling to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Jos 24:14-15)
Lovely! Great! Awesome! Thanks A Million Fr Schmitz! I was waiting for something like this. Helps very much when we have to address persons, issues or topics on Social media as well. May the Holy Spirit guide and bless your ministries.
Btw i wanted to thank you for your videos. I love learning about Catholicism and i feel your explanations are on point and not so extremist and allow us to safely maneuver this hectic world..
Excellent video. Yeah, giving respect doesn't mean you approve of everything that one does, especially if they're a horrible person. Heck, you might not have the best neighbor, but they're still a human being.
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:00 📺 The video discusses respect and its different aspects. 00:55 👥 Three types of respect are highlighted: respect for human dignity, respect for authority positions, and respect based on character. 02:15 ⚖️ Respecting human dignity involves acknowledging inherent worth regardless of behavior. 03:10 👔 Respect for authority positions is tied to the role, not the individual's character. 04:08 🕊️ Respect for clergy or leaders extends to their position and can involve offering correction. 05:19 📝 Expressing respect through service is emphasized, even if the person's character is not respected. 06:42 💯 Respect earned through character is the highest form of respect, linked to trust. 07:22 🤝 Trustworthy individuals deserve respect based on their character and actions. 08:05 🤔 Understanding the different levels of respect helps navigate confusing situations. 08:31 🙏 The video concludes by inviting viewers to share their thoughts in the comments. Made with HARPA AI
Everyone experiences the difficulty of dealing with negative people that we do not respect. What is more than their difficult behavior is to find out why they act the way they do, it usually stems from hurt in their past, and they never had the clergy or parents or teachers to help them understand why they are difficult and invest in them to bring their behavior to one that is more conducive for society. Once they understand the transformation in which you helped to achieve, all difficulty will go away and you will have a foundation of respect and loyalty that will spread beyond the person you helped.
I just saw you on History's THE LAST POPE program and decided to check this out. I must say you are a very captivating and very good teacher who presents your teachings in a very easy to understand and accessible way. Your talk on respect is very much needed in these turbulent times I think. I think the greatest example of respecting the office rather than the person in that authority is best exemplified by the current US president. I have a great respect for the Office of the President and what it can represent but we all know these are fallible people. Mr. Trump may be the worst out of the lot but that doesn't mean that respect for the office should be thrown away as well. Anywho, while my comment wasn't overly theological it is a good "real world" application of what you spoke of. I will continue to look in on your videos from time to time.
#askfrmike can you please do Rosary Video's. What is the best way to email you Fr. Mike? Thank you for your service and the love and wisdom you share to all of us. 🕆
While this video predates the recent revelation of the same scandals it was still timely. I really respect Fr. Mike (positionally and in what I know about his demeanor in his videos). Thanks for sharing this insight and understanding on the different types of respect. Respect does not mean you condone a person's poor behavior or bad character--important distinction made in this video. Bravo!
Remember his disclaimer at the beginning of the video. It was NOT produced in response to the current news so this is NOT in reference to those who abused others. We can apply what he said though. While we do not respect the horrible people who did horrible things to others and abused their position--we still respect the office. They get removed from that position that they have abused (finally) and, hopefully, someone who has a character we can respect will fill that office that we respect. I was not bashing Fr. Mike. I think he is one of the good guys!!
I am late to this video, but I couldn't agree more with what you have said. I have long-since identified and distinguished between those three types of respect. I recall when teaching that we were told, on a training course, that teachers had to earn the respect of pupils, I stood up and said that was far too simplistic and even dangerous and explained why. It didn't go down well with the senior management. 😏 And, yes, it is a framework on how we respond to a person in a position of responsibility or authority who has many failings. And the same framework informs and guides how we treat even those who have comitted the most heinous sinds and crimes; they are still human and still a child of God, no matter how fallen.
Very true. And I would argue that respect for the Authority trumps respect for the Character: for example correcting or protesting the actions of some leader. Seriously, we can't remain silent on certain issues. Even though we respect the office, we need to voice our disapproval for the actions of certain characters and demand action.
Everyone except first acquaintances who greet you without taking their hat off or wear hats in your home. Those people need to be respected from across the globe.
I respect the priest in my parish . I feel so comfortable when I go to him for confession and I do not close the curtain it's face to make it like a Personal when I'm talking to him .
"Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their PROPERTY." Exodus 21:20-21
Alexander Vielman I saw what your comment said before the edit. That "there's more beads than any for the mother than for the Father". First and foremost, any true Catholic will tell you God comes first. Second, quantity should never determine how much something means. If you work a 12 hour job but only sleep 8 hours at night with your wife, that doesn't mean you love your job more. If you breathe 5 Million times a year, but only pray 1,000 times a year, that doesn't mean you put breathing before God--"so you are a sinner". It's about what's in your heart to Him. Where God truly sees what means what to you. God can monitor anything well. Any form of prayer, He is welcomed into. And if I'm a true Catholic, I'll tell you we will never try to unwelcome God as first anywhere. I have more and more to learn for now. I'm happy to hear you concerned for our priorities. Your comment gives me more hope than any feeling of back-turning.
I actually think this video is perfect for now. The message of "make sure the office becomes all it should be" hopefully encourages whistle blowers to know it is respectful to protect the office.
Well, St. John Eudes is here living in poverty after having spent years of his life in Music at symphanies all over the country. He does not show up rich like they teach he may have been dURING his first life. But he told me once,"There is a BIG DIFFERENCE IN HOW HE was in chRGE the first time and called the shots at whAT someone did or did not do. Now, they just use his name and he has no say in anything.
Great video Father Mike! Could you and/or ascension presents team put together a video addressing people who are “spiritual and not religious” or would say “well that’s your belief” if proposed with the faith? I find there’s a good amount of people in today’s culture who love spirituality but refuse to accept religion or see how they’re connected. I’d love to hear your thoughts! Thank you and God bless!
Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Aug 25 on how the hypocritical disobedience of Church leaders does not justify our own disobedience. The video is called Hypocrisy and Obedience by franciscanfrairs channel.
Thank you Father. This was a great video. I have a question about respect that must be given during times of extreme unrest (whether they appear that way or not, of course). For instance, were the founding fathers of the U.S. acting in a sinful way when they declared independence from the British crown? At what point can someone consider a position of authority null or the actual position itself immoral. Must someone respect the seat of the Chancellor of the German Reich or Premier of the Soviet Union or Prime Minister of Cambodia circa 1970's? These are the questions that I keep coming back to in terms of authority and respect. In many cases even speaking out against those positions could land you and your whole family in Gulag. Thanks for taking the time to read, and I'm very interested in your thoughts. Your videos are always awesome.
To respect something or someone means to ascribe value to that person/thing. In order for something to be valuable, other things have to be invaluable. If all things are equally valuable, then value does not exist, and therefore respect does not exist. If we are to respect all humans as God commands, then we have to choose to recognize the value that each human being has. You cannot force anyone to respect anyone they don’t see value in. They have to come to the realization on their own that all humans are valuable and created in the image of God.
I pray ...one day I will have a friend like you. God bless you Fr Mike. 💜✝️

Thanks for your effort to continue reaching out through these podcasts, know that I am praying for you every week- David
Your timing is perfect as always! This has brought some clarity for me, especially at work. Thank you, Fr. Mike!
Father Mike, please make a video about marriage!
Specifically "leave and cleave" and how to (as a catholic) deal with disputes with in-laws :)
You have a right to defend yourself and shouldnt feel for correcting them since itll benefit them
You're awesome and love your videos for Fatherly advice. This one hits home and really helps. Thank you!
Father Mike is so dreamy
Right on, Fr. Mike. That makes a lot of sense, and clears up confusion with regards to respect. I could never reconcile the fact we are called to respect our elders whenever they were talking or acting in a manner not deserving of respect, but I really appreciate the way you broke the topic down and addressed forms of respect point by point. It is a lot clearer now.
Thanks for the video Fr. Mike! It makes sense to me and gives me a better idea of how to order my life and actions! God bless you!
Why is the Church called She?
Rita Rogers because the Church is the bride of Christ.
Levels of respect Yes father it is accurate, but the best level is the trust of respect attached to their very soul God Bless the World.🙏✝⛪💎✝⛪🙏
Thank you for your wise perspective. It really will help me with someone I'm really struggling with right now!
#askfathermike can you please do a video on stigmata?
That would be awesome!
They did one a couple of years ago. Just look for it
I would love to see this!
Jesus Rodriguez I haven’t been able to find it
@@anastasiagolden4894 im going to bed. But ill find it tomorrow after i get out of work
You inspire me everyday, Fr. Mike😘💞
This is a very important message, thank you for making this video and explaining these things so well, God bless
I'm a protestant but this is really helpful!
This is very good, it clears up what respect is
Respect... it can be hard to do. This video has good insight regardless.
Thanks Fr. Mike! I admire you
Well...said, Fr. Mike!!!
✝️🙏✝️🙏✝️
Thank you for that point of view, I need to hear that. God bless
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:00 📺 The video discusses respect and its different aspects.

Thank you for opening with the clarifying comment. Would have been quite awkward without knowing the timing.
Very true, Fr Mike. The last part i.e.!
Thank you for the introduction Father, it brings clarity and thank you for the topic.
Bravo!
That is the truth, it is disappointing fr mike isn't speaking out. He is sugar coating the problem.
I am so glad you clarified this...this video really helped me
Father, if I could buy a plane ticket, I would like to meet you! You seem to be a very good teacher.
And, yes, it is a framework on how we respond to a person in a position of responsibility or authority who has many failings.
And the same framework informs and guides how we treat even those who have comitted the most heinous sinds and crimes; they are still human and still a child of God, no matter how fallen.
I’ve had an experience with a person where awful things were said to me. I only respect their position as an elder and for my character.
Very true. And I would argue that respect for the Authority trumps respect for the Character: for example correcting or protesting the actions of some leader.
Seriously, we can't remain silent on certain issues. Even though we respect the office, we need to voice our disapproval for the actions of certain characters and demand action.
As always, amazing :)
Wow this helps with how I view my dad. Always wondered...
God bless you
Greetings from beautiful Belize
Well said, yet agian. Love your videos! Thanks for sharing!
Fr Mike, its accurate!☺ THANK you
Everyone except first acquaintances who greet you without taking their hat off or wear hats in your home. Those people need to be respected from across the globe.
‘Hate the sin, not the sinner’
I respect the priest in my parish . I feel so comfortable when I go to him for confession and I do not close the curtain it's face to make it like a Personal when I'm talking to him .
"Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their PROPERTY." Exodus 21:20-21

Could you do a video on Scrupulosity as an OCD and how it can affect one's spiritual life
8:37 I never noticed the chair!
In the military we’re frequently told “we respect the rank, not the man”
Please have a mass said to all those who are suffering because of authority.
Great Video!

Excellent video.

I saw what your comment said before the edit.
I would think everyone should respect everyone regardless of who or what you are.
Did you search the Ascension Presents videos from their Channel page? I think Fr. Mike has talked about that.
Respect based on character is earned. If I do not respect a person of poor character am I in effect judging that person?
😊
Fr Terrance gives the homily at Bloomington, IN on Aug 25 on how the hypocritical disobedience of Church leaders does not justify our own disobedience. The video is called Hypocrisy and Obedience by franciscanfrairs channel.
It's crazy I was thinking of this exact question before I went onto youtube and saw this. Coincidence? I think not
Thank you Father.
Jason Bell that is a very good question indeed.
my Son is given up he has Brean Cancer Pray for him
Amen
Praying for you both.
What happened to the Encounter the Word series on here? I loved having that as a tool to look more into the readings before mass
Don Draper selling Catholicism now? I'm sold 😇
