  • Here's how I make one of the leather conditioners for my gear. After Making it I use it on one a Romanian Military Haversack and Rucksack. Its a beeswax based waterproofer, similar to a saddle soap.I sell it, but it's easy to make and not all that expensive either. Hope you enjoy and we'll be getting outside to record some videos in the canoe and on the trail soon! Thanks for watching!

Thats what I do too, when using boiled linseed oil, I just go ahead and put my rags and paper towels into a old big folgers coffee can and at the end of the day I throw a match in and go ahead and burn them.

Why don't you just apply it when the mixture is melted and use a 2" -3" paint brush, to brush it on then hang the bag to dry? seems like it would be much easier. also I've seen people use a 5 gallon bucket depending on the size of the bag they are water proofing, and they squeeze 2-3 big tubes of 100% silicon with a calk gun into the bucket with about 2qt (or up to 2 gallons) of naphtha and stuff the pack in and let it soak for 10min stirring it every few min, then remove and hang until dry .

I use silicone on nylon and polyester fabrics sometimes. Or to reseal nylon tents and shit. A lot of my packs these days I make my own fixin wax or Greenland wax is a brand name of the stuff. But 💯 use a decent size brush. Our gloves that we make, I use a 1” brush. I’ve tried dipping them and other ways to apply the dressing. On gloves, they have to be brushed.
On packs, you can buy the spray and spray the hell out of it. It just stinks like chemicals. I cheaper out and did that with my fjallraven pants. I won’t use it again. It stinks. I have also since switched to a polish bread bag as a haversack. I just scored a couple dozen of those. I’ll be modifying them and waterproofing them and selling them in my gear shop. I have a video on waterproofing them over a campfire. But they’re awesome haversacks.
Anyway, I typically use the smaller brushes bc it makes it easier to get into the nooks and crannies without gobbling too much wax up everywhere else. But a bigger brush would be faster, dipping would be fastest. But better precision for just getting the wax where you want it with smaller brushes.
