It does sound very similar. However, sampling is rather the norm nowadays than not, don't you think? And I don't see why it should do harm to the piece as sampling is not merely repeting things that already existed but developing it into something new. Of course one can always argue whether the result is nice or not. I guess, just a matter of taste. I love it.
This song has a LOT in common with a certain Nine Inch Nails song... To the point where this song was obviously based off of it. But don't get me wrong, I think that is awesome! Trent Reznor did so much for music, I love to see an artist has the same inspirations and listening selection as I do.
Then I suggest finding different friends. Friends shouldn't care about what kind of music you like. If they ridicule you for listening to this, they don't really understand the meaning of friends. Or you have the wrong definition of friendship.

This band reminds me of my love life, this girl I found, did a shit ton of acid with, listened to god is astronaut to the point where it's mesmerizing. Just in a trance, the music made everything, it was amazing and ethereal.
But there are no catchy choruses, generic pop club beats....how am I supposed to dance to this? I'm not? I'm just supposed to listen and revel in the grand scope and magnificance that is "God is an Astronaut"? This, I can do.
