@@marinaspalate That's how I felt at the end of my oldest's 1st grade year, so by 3rd grade I had found the Ron Paul Curriculum (which is self-led through videos online) and that has been a game changer! Funny enough, I just published a review video of that program: ua-cam.com/video/27mliALvpho/v-deo.html I actually decided to get the new version of TGTB for my rising 3rd grader this year, because I had actually missed teaching her (she did the video courses through BJU Press this past year, which we also loved!)
I also have four kids, ages 8 - 5 months, and my 5-year-old is advanced in math. We love horizons with my 8-year-old, because it's open and go, colorful, has little math games/codes to decipher, and circulates well through the topics, but my 5-year-old is at a second grade math level, is absolutely bored with the long lists of addition and subtraction math problems when he is now proficient in times tables. So I'm highly considering getting the Beta for him. Thank you for this!
Just started our homeschooling journey this year, I am determined and hopeful that we can do this! Thank you for this review. I think my little would benefit from the manipulatives and from the videos (honestly so would I) but I know she would also like maybe some fun math stuff sprinkled in, but I think I can find a fun worksheet or two to add in after the concepts are understood. :) thank you so much for this breakdown of the curriculum!
We have used Math-U-See for many years! My sister, who is an economics teacher today, started out her math journey with Math-U-See. We actually haven't used it in high school before this year, but this year we're trying it out for high school, too!
Hi its Victoria from home Educating the mad lads on the husbands phone. I hear ya about not being confident teaching maths. I'm the saame. The more concise the workbook is the happier I am we are doing it right xx I love it incorporates videos my kids are very visual so this would help them get it x
Wow, “The best math curriculum..” Thank You for sharing!!! And yes.. I am trying to figure out how to teach my third grader multiplication.. 😬 I’ll look into it! Thanks
We use on MUS and love it. My girls are on Alpha. One of my concerns is how they rely on the blocks. What happens when they do t have blocks? Any insights?
Great question! We haven't really gone through that, but I'm just brainstorming and thinking that you could have them do the last 2 problems of a worksheet without the blocks and see how they do and then gradually each day have them do more of the problems without the blocks until they don't feel the need for them anymore... 🤷♀️
I started my 4 year old daughter with Primer last August. She loved it and breezed through it. She turned 5 in January. We started Alpha at that time. We are moving slower. We are now on lesson 7. When they say “master”, do they mean understand 7+2=9 without using the blocks?
That's fantastic! I would definitely move slower through Alpha! Typically that's used in 1st grade, but if your daughter seems to understand it all really well and can memorize her addition facts, then she has "mastered" those lessons!
I am looking into a math curriculum for my son who is homeschooled and is currently in first grade. I think Math U See is a good choice for him. Also my daughter has done My Math for the first two years and she is now currently in third grade and I am considering doing this curriculum as well. I am unsure how she may adapt to this curriculum though. Do you know of anyone who has started afterwards? How do I know what book to start her with?
Great question! I haven't heard of My Math, so I'm not sure how that compares to Math-U-See, but I have heard the Math-U-See teaches things in a different order than public school. If you reach out to MUS, I'm sure they have a rep who can help direct you to the correct level to start her on! Their 3rd grade level is called Gamma.
Thank you for this! We are entering out second year of homeschooling and trying to decide on another math program. I have a 12 yo, 6th grader that hates math 🤦🏻♀️ She went to private school and then used teaching textbooks last year. She did not enjoy TT and was struggling so I wanted to swap things up for her...but I need something that teaches her the lessons because, well, I hated math , too 😂. So this looks good for her. How do we know what are in each level? I would probably back track a little for her to let her master things she doesn’t understand completely as well. I also have a 9 yo boy that is dyslexic and major working memory issues and a 7yo girl that seems to breeze through all subjects so far, so I’ll be putting them on the same level of math. Any suggestions? Does this program have answer keys for the parent?
Hi Candice! Oh no, I'm sorry she hates math! (lol at you hating it too!!) I LOVE that this program teaches it for me! Great question! Math in public school goes in a different order than this program (I've been told...) They're 6th grade level is called Zeta and goes through decimals, percents and other topics. The book before that is called Epsilon and that's where they learn fractions. I would recommend going to their site (store.demmelearning.com/math-u-see) and looking at what each level teaches to see which level you might want to back track to. It's so important to master each concept before moving forward, so I think that's a great plan! For your 9 & 7 yo, I would suggest the Beta level. That's what we're using with our 2nd grader! The instruction manual contains the answer key!
Current in the same exact situation, going into my 2nd year of homeschooling. Leaving TT my level 4 felt my daughter needed to learn more right after public school. Debating if to start this curriculum.
You could ask their teacher to take a look at it online, but from what I've heard, public school teaches math differently than this program, so it might be confusing to have your child learn both ways. I've also heard that the order that public school goes in is different than this program, so I'm not sure how well they're levels would match up with what grade your child is in, but you can go on their site and chat with one of their reps about it!
We haven't tried other math curriculums for comparison, but I feel like it is those 2 things! If y'all end up going with it, I hope they find it easy to understand!
@@TheJohnsonCrew I really like what I see with Math with Confidence too. Very hands on / SEE the math type curriculum but MUS seemed to be a bit more streamlined and straightforward without a lot of hoopla haha. MWC has fun games etc which I know my kids would love BUT I have 4 kids and I need SIMPLE. I did a search on MUS here tonight and your video came up! I assume you are still using MUS? How high have you gone in the curriculum?
@@faithfullyinfertile Hi! 👋🏼I haven't heard of that one! I'm with you - simple works best for us! We are up to Epsilon with my 10yo! Still loving it! 👍🏼
How does your day go with multiple kids at different levels. I know you said you do it three days a week.. is one kid doing it at one time of the day and the other at another time of day ? Or are they all doing it at the same time? And if they are at the same time how do you handle them watching the videos ?
Great question! You only need to watch one video per week to introduce the new concept for that unit, so that doesn't always land on the same day for my 2 oldest. The videos are so short that you could watch one video and then have them work on their worksheet while the next kid watches their video. I usually try to have them working on something independently while I'm hands on with another kid for all subjects throughout the day, or they can have a break while I'm working with one kid.
I haven't heard of Right Start before, so I'm not sure how they compare! Sorry! I really appreciate having a video to teach the concepts (and to refresh me on how to reinforce them)!
Good for you! That's a big step! What grade is he currently in? If you see that he hasn't mastered certain concepts, I would definitely go back and work on those things until he masters them! Otherwise, math will be so hard moving forward. It may not take him very long to master these concepts when you're working one on one with him, so don't let that discourage you or him that he's having to go back - he will catch up and be so much happier!
Does your child(ren) love or loathe math? What curriculum are you currently using?
Currently using Saxon Math... I’d love the online streaming video your curriculum comes with!!!!! I’ll look into it for sure!!
I’m using TGTB right now. And as much as I love it, I’m kind of tired of teaching it

Do you need a full set of the blocks? I ordered some off of eBay and I think it’s nearly a full set but just shy. Will this matter?
That's totally fine! Score!
What do you use after 4th grade
Still Math-u-see! They go through calculus! My oldest is 11 and is on the Zeta book (decimals & percents)!
I totally understand being nervous to teach Math! It is definitely a subject I don't want to mess up. haha.
