Flying fish is one of the most interesting fish that can be seen jumping out of the sea. They live in all of the oceans, particularly in tropical and warm subtropical waters. There are about 64 species of flying fish around the world and commonly found in the top layer of the ocean to a depth of about 200 meters.
The flying fish actually don't have the ability to fly like a birds, but they jumped up and glide through the air for short distances. They have pectoral fins that have similar function to the birds wings. Some species of flying fish have 4 wings. These four winged flying fish have large pectoral fins as well as large pelvic fins. When flying fish are in danger, they speed up under the water by wagging their tails and keeping their fins close to the body.
Then they spread their wings and leap into the air, gliding for around 45 seconds. Once in the air, their rigid "wings" can make them glide up to 200 meters. At the end of a glide, they fold their pectoral fins to re-enter the sea, or drop their tails into the water to push against the water to lift for another glide, possibly changing direction. The main reason for this behavior is believed to be escape from predators.
Flying fish can be up to 18 inches long, but average 7 to 12 inches. They eat a variety of foods, but plankton make up a large portion of their diet, and sometimes small crustaceans. Although flying fish gliding ability helps them to escape from sea predators like tuna, mackerel and swordfish, but they become the target of sea birds once they are in the air.
The flying fish are attracted to light, like a number of sea creatures, and fishermen take advantage of this with substantial results. They are commercially fished in Japan, Vietnam, and China by gillnetting, and in Indonesia and India by dipnetting. Often in Japanese cuisine, the fish is preserved by drying to be used as fish stock for dashi broth. There is currently no protection status on these animals.
45 seconds hang time isn't bad! Wow, what I wouldn't give to soar like that!
Thats insane long... with a rc glider, we do 30cm per seconde sink rate. So imagine how good they glide
Start with skydiving, then fly with tracksuits and wingsuits.
@@kvarnerinfoTV Agreed 100%! I've done skydiving, loved it. Wingsuit is my dream, though -- definitely on my bucket list!
@@bikizuzu2 You will need C license, 300 plus solo skydives
Wouldn't?
45 seconds is the absolute maximum longest ever recorded flight of a flying fish, not the usual time. Their hang time is normally much shorter. Great video!
Seen these guys up in NT Australia flying for a good 20 or so seconds. Truly incredible!
Thank for your good channels n
The other fish must be insanely jealous
😂😂
When I was in the Navy, I used to sit down in the well deck aboard ship which is much closer to the water than the other decks. I was on a fleet oiler steaming down around the Philippines and the flying fish were very all over the place. I could spend hours off-watch playing guitar and watching the flying fish cruising a couple feet, if that, above the surface. They were like my little buds whenever I got a chance to sit down there. You know, it's one of those memories I flash back on from time to time, thinking about how lucky I was to have those experience which are relatively rare in life. Yeah, the Navy took me places I could never afford; some I didn't really want to "visit" but all gave me a memory, borh good and bad which I look back on. To me, they are priceless. I know this sounds like a recruitment ad, but if you are a young person not sure of what direction you want to go, the service is a fine place to figure that out. If you go in right after high school ot thereabouts, you could spend 20 years, get out with a nice little paycheck every month for the rest of your life and you'd be only like 40, and you can embark on another career, all the while collecting a monthly check. It's something to think about. Like I say, I sound like a recruiter, but it is an option for you to think about. Thanks for hearing me out everybody. I never regretted those Navy years and it gave me memories, mostly good ones and a bunch of benefits- the most valuable one to me is the sense of self respect. Okay...this old big mouth is over and out. Best wishes and good health from the Blue Ridge! Va. Cork
Such a beautiful comment. God bless!
I, too, was in the Navy, watching the flying fish taking-off from the bow of the oiler I was on in the South China sea. A night of rough weather, the well decks would be littered with the fish.
I hope these beautiful animals get the protection they deserve soon
Every animal deserves protection
Its just a fish
Flying AND breathing/diving underwater. They're living EVERYONE'S best life.
Taking “falling with style” to a new level
i need flying animals that can walk normally like animals that walk like a flying dog
Wow really very cute fishes looking so beautiful 😍😍
They are quite tasty when fried. Much like herring.
Fried flying fish 🐟🐟 😋😋😋😋😋😋😋
"Crust-ass-eon" he says 🤣🤣🤣
Does this mean that these are gonna evolve to breathe air and fly?
yes
Well they i don't think they really have the need to but they sure can
No ... evolution this the dumbest theory ever and I'm not a religious person

Don't be shy to put forward your groundbreaking discovery along with decades long research and evidence about how life came on Earth then.
No one is stopping you if you know better.
I dont think breathing air since they probably feel like is better to live in the ocean. Flying where they can flap their wings and actually fly? Maybe because they are also pressured by sea birds so they can evade them better if they do evolve to actually be able to fly. Evolutionary pressure is very unique and it is amazing how these fish was able to evolve this way.
Gosto de assistir vídeos sobre o mar; sou pescador, esse peixe e muinto gostoso ( avoador)😊😊😊😊.

The skimwing from Way of Water brought me here.
Same.
I think these creatures should be protected. it breaks my heart that they escape the underwater predators only to be consumed by a sea gull! these guys need our help
Go do it then
Even if they were, Japan wouldn't gaf. Look at Tuna.
Nature isn't as fragile as we humans think it is.
It's a bit arrogant to think they need our help
@@Wanderlight17 agreed, humans are the reason for most ecological issues already lmao we’ve done enough..
@@Wanderlight17 Is that your opinon?
Some gig I played in the late 80s they had flying fish served and they were delicious 😋
Why this spooky music for the faeries of the sea?? 🤣🧚🏻♀️🧜🏻♀️
Such an amazing and interresting fish
Beautiful Creatures God Made, Thank you Very Much For Taking Your Time To Make The Vídeo
Thank you Jesus
These guys skipped the leg day and went straight to winga
What fantastic animals!
I've seen before but only when I went on a cruise to Mexico. I guess we ran right through a school of them because there were 100s at a time.. They do leap pretty far.
The Japanese be all like, Flying fish..... ? more like frying fish!
I don't know about you, but I just randomly searched 'flying fish'..
excellent ❤❤❤
the music and tone of voice is like he's talking about a murder mystery
I had to double check it was a fish video. I thought I was listening to a scary story channel.
Lol
the fish actually does not fly like birds they just jumped out of water due to thiere enlarge pectoral fins
THEY LOOK LIKE AIRPLANES IN THE AIR..🤗😍🤗😍
im not impressed
Imagine existing in life as a winged tube.
Jesus Christ!!! When did a fish began to fly
I love how he spoke about predators like tuna and etc, yet the only other fish there was a mahi-mahi 😂
And he called 200m a short distance. I don't know if I would call gliding that long a short distance. If they only glided for ten or twenty feet yeah that would be a short distance. But not two football fields.
God's creation, awesome
Imagine running away out of the water from another fish then get caught by a bird
Imagine getting just one try to realize that
That was a great video 👍
I could have stood for it to have been at least ten more minutes. You should do another one.
😂😂😂இறைவனின் கற்பனையில் இவையும் ஒன்று...!
While living in Hawaii I witnessed flying fish that actually flapped their wings about as fast as a hummingbird. These fish were no more than 8 to 10 feet away at eye-level. I've had several people tell me I must be wrong about this, but the guy steering the boat saw it happen too. I don't know if those fish are a different species than the ones I saw on the Gulf of Mexico, and I never got to see those fish up close, while they were flying, but they were running into the white, well-lit wall, that backed the ramp going down into the ocean on the Lay-Barge I was working on. It seemed like they were about 10 feet or more above the water when they collided with the wall, kind of like moths drawn to a flame. Every so often, I would walk over and throw them into a white five-gallon bucket, for bait when I finished work and did a little fishing. When cast out into the ocean, it was only a matter of about 5 or 10 seconds before a big fish took the bait. Obviously, that is why they evolved to fly...they must taste really good!
Why didn’t god give us pectoral find like that…? It be flyin all ova the place 😂
0:39 The exact shape and form of an airplane.
I saw them in Avatar 2
Cá chuồn biển bay coi đẹp quá ok
Flying fish used land on our ship off the west coast Africa. I would gather them up gut them and get the cook them for me. Yum yum,
So? Dragons where real ? 🐉
i am 23 never heard about or seen flying fish until today
Well, I'd call them sea flies😅
This is sad that the fish is escaping literally from sea, air but than ending up on human dinner :(
The flying fish is attracted to light

200m.. thats pretty good distance .
Woop woop go us!!
the forbidden fish
imagine, if they could fly up to 30 minutes, it would be a dried fish.

Watch out for the birds though
Could you please just show one flying from start to finish without all the slow motion and cuts?
I saw one fly out of the water to avoid a blue fish only to be caught by a seagull. Sh.. happens.
Can scienctists can not make that look like machine.
Nimekuja kuangalia hii video baada ya kupata taarifa kwa Millard ayo!
Bro those look like the gold planes that they found in Egypt thinking they are planes
I bet when Atheist watch a video of flying fish they think thats the evolutionary link between fish and bird lol
could you make the music just a tiny bit more eerie.

0:29 I don't know if I would call 650 ft, or over two football fields "short distances"
The air bounces against the water called "ground effect" and pzm ( pressure zone mediation
hello, permission to use the video for college assignments
I don't understand the physics... 45 seconds is a long time... Without maintaining speed... How does it maintain lift with no forward propulsion? You can fire a bullet at 45 degrees up into the sky and it won't make 45 seconds.. but these maintain perfectly level flight.....
What are "cruisetasians"
I love XXX crustacean too man
Wondering what they taste like... 🤔
Always China one day food is gonna run out and that’s the day we will regret not protecting are oceans
Cant fly away from humans
Bro it’s just avatar the way of water
There are more than 60 species of flying fish that can be found all over the world.
Flying fish have an uncommon ability is are natural defense mechanism evade predators where they can make powerful, self-propelled leaps out of water into air, their long wing like fins enable gliding flight for considerable distance above water surface
We will gain from fry flying fish as soon as possible God particles of making precious metals space
Up to 200 metres high ain't too bad either🤔
Lol what? They don't fly 200m high.

Flying fish can kill human
They got it had in the water so they jump out only to be eaten by birds and I thought I had it rough. Not to mention being fished by humans.
lol funny fish
Thems amazing skill to escape first predator just got him between 2 predators not that much amazing
3 predators you mean, the most harmful one is human!.... we hunt them for food, just like birds and other fish....
