  • Helena was founded as a gold camp during the Montana gold rush, and established on October 30, 1864. Due to the gold rush, Helena would become a wealthy city, with approximately 50 millionaires inhabiting the area by 1888. The concentration of wealth contributed to the city's prominent, elaborate Victorian architecture.
At the 2010 census Helena's population was 28,190, making it the fifth least populous state capital in the United States and the sixth most populous city in Montana.[8][9][10] It is the principal city of the Helena Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Lewis and Clark and Jefferson counties; its population is 81,653 according to the 2019 Census Estimate.
The local daily newspaper is the Independent Record. The city is served by Helena Regional Airport (HLN).

@@TrenchDweller - Exactly!!! Same thing in Colorado; folks swoop in, buy up properties and rent out on Air B&B. Not to mention the vast majority are Marxists, so they vote against laws that we need to keep us a safe place to live.
If you’re from California, try actually self evaluating before wanting to leave the shithole state you come from. Leave your voting habits and your ideals behind.

@@swayd1029 - still, it’s the nature of the beast. CA is gorgeous, so is Oregon and Washington state, but they’re liberal havens and are absolutely rife with filth. I have family in northern CA with farms and ranches, they can’t stand SO Cal, but they won’t leave because it’s family owned. Californians may not all be bad, but they do wreak havoc on economies.

@@kells4723 ??? buying up property, raising rent, and wringing every dollar out of renters is what capitalists do. rich californians buy property and exploit renters in order to turn a profit - that's captialism

If there was a city planner who gave a fuck, this whole town could fit inside ONE Houston block.

Those boring grid cities? No thx
This city spawned out of a gulch in the 1800's. The way towns were built then was much different. Additionally, the gold miners, ranchers and others here in Helena didn't envision a long term plan for mass migration. Thus, it grew in periods from Last Chance Gulch downtown outwardly from there. That's what gives it so much character. Those lame grid blocks with houses of all the same type are ugly and depressing.
