@1:01:53 Mazda does have a bad track record with octane rating. When the Mazdaspeed6 was first launched (with an engine designed for 93 PON), Mazdaspeed dealers were delivering the cars to customers with tanks full of 87 PON. Those cars did not run well.

Brake basically stop working after 3 minutes of spirited driving. Reliable and practical car though. Tuned eventually(intake+93 tune+catback) it was at 337WHP. Amazing power but after two months it was boring. There is no edge, the sound isn’t special and it isn’t enough fun. Stock the engine feels lacking. When you first touch the throttle with the lightest input it feels like there is a mountain of power and engine sound waiting to be unleashed. Then after you floor it you get a tiny amount of turbo lag before the engine seems to stop working hard. It feels like a base civic but the revs run out before anything good happens. The whole experience is dulled as if you are in a civilized, quiet, fast-but-who-cares, and ultimately lame modern car. The performance is impressive but fun is more important. Too bas we don’t have any practical affordable family cars with edge anymore. I’m going back to buying old cars.
The engine is also tuned like a diesel. It prefers to live low in the revs and the transmission is paired to not really let you wind it out (because why would you want to when the engine is tuned in such a way...)
@FeLiX13sLaVe that's true, cause of that it's definitely more luxury than sporty. When you considered it as a luxury hatchback that's comfortable cruising at 90mph more than a sporty hatch you kinda overlook the engine and trans tuning cause of how good that experience is.

@@JasonCammisa Fair enough. Normal mode is so dull that I only drive it in sport mode, but then it's overly aggressive with gear selection so I end up manual shifting it also. Most manual turbo cars don’t build boost without a programmed “launch control”. The wastegates are programmed to stay open with the clutch depressed in 1st gear. Jason just beat the shit out of it and shifted like it was a rental. 😂
Would love to hear your source on this. Our M2 has a noticible boost increase when we stab it a couple times before launching during autocross. Similar with the Focus RS.
@ is your car stock, no aftermarket tune? If it’s a stock car and manual, you don’t build boost in neutral or with the clutch in. There’s no “source”, that’s how the turbo system works. You need some sort of inertia/load to build boost or an aftermarket tune with a programmed “launch control” which adjusts your ignition timing and you get that rata-tat-tat sound like when you hit the rev limiter. By the way, this also destroys your turbo and cats, don’t do it. Same with the crackle tunes.
@@TML34 stock m2, B Street autocross class (moving to BST next season). All I can tell you is that flooring the throttle up to 3k (very torque heavy engine) 3-4 times before dumping the clutch gives us a noticeably better launch on the RE-71RS tires we run (compared to holding steady at 3k rpm and flooring the gas as we dump the clutch). Seems to contradict your idea of "that's just how it is", given the very noticeable increase in torque provided by the stabs. I don't think it's necessarially building boost, but kicking the turbo RPMs up probably had a positive impact on building boost under load.
Wanna blow your mind? Watch my W198 "Revelations" episode and look for the scene shot in the car with just the greenhouse visible. It's indistinguishable from a Porsche 356 and very close to a 911. So, technically, it's on brand!

Yer not much if yer not Dutch. Vredestein tires are great. It’s good they’re sponsoring the pidcast- it’s a good fit and most enthusiasts don’t know anything about them. If you guys want to expense a trip here to Japan (hint hint), it would behoove you to learn that Toyota Rent-a-Car here in Japan rents the GR86 (and the GR Yaris... and the Mirai if you want to be weird). I'll be happy to meet you at the airport, translate and be your tour guide. You're welcome and looking forward to it.
Why'd you guys forget to hit sport mode on the 3 Turbo? After all that effort of getting it on there lol
If they're shifting manually it wouldn't have made a difference
The driver(s) in the car that you see in the video (it might have been both Derek and Randy Pobst) mightn't have had it in sport mode, but the published 0-60 and 1/4-mile numbers were obtained by me prior to filming. I tested in every conceivable mode (Sport/non-sport), manually shifting, and/or ESC off. etc. I tried it all, including putting 2/3 tank of 100-octane in it and retesting it. It did nothing. The number you see is the best it managed. The only way anyone was going to get that Mazda down the track any quicker was to put a jet-pack on the back!
@@JasonCammisa Fair enough. Normal mode is so dull that I only drive it in sport mode, but then it's overly aggressive with gear selection so I end up manual shifting it also. According to the trip computer I also get better mileage in sport mode from using all that torque and coasting as opposed to using more throttle in normal mode. Mine's taken 40k of straight abuse, but I'm ready to move on.
I feel like my E92 335 even with it’s tuned n55 is getting slower even with a huge lol , 425hp, but alt least I have the pleasure to choose my gears
Thank you for not having a ball deoderant sponsor, and actually having someone relevant to your audience sponsor the show!
We here at the Carmudgeon Show pride ourselves on the lack of necessity for testicular antiperspirants. lol
Also if you want a fun hatch a used kona n is great fun
+1 for the Kona N. We autocross ours and it's rapid.
We didn't forget about the mazda 3 turbo. We remembered it is auto only 😒
If anyone would understand that enthusiasts want manuals, you'd think it would be Mazda. Quite disappointing on this one.
43:05
You should do same model new vs used… and/or modified…
4:06 synchronistically, Clément is a French/Belgian bike tyre manufacturer specialising in hard-wearing winter/off-road models 🙃
Jason you haveee to drive an F56 mini JCW with the (factory) pro exhaust and a manual. I feel like it’s not appreciated enough.
This new mini generation is obviously a disappointment with it not having a manual option
Everyman's cars drag race was just awesome ❤❤❤. You should get some EU only models to compete against US 🤟🤟❤.
Keep it up with great work bringing us videos, podcasts and other amazing content
And you took your Mom, with you to Reno. Now that was a great story.
And I have the absolutely funniest pictures of this; sad I didn't get to include this. The disco ball was almost taller than my little Italian mother!
The Mazda does sound broken.
Have had none of these strange surges on mine.
19:24 I wonder what spouse employed stands for 🤔
Hi Jason, have you ever tried the Nissan NX 2000?
A front only a mother could love, a bit of a chicks car, japanese shitbox equivilant to your gti. And the smallest Z car from Nissan.
If you havent tried one yet, I think you might like it
I haven't but have always been interested!
27:16 - MB needs to stop dancing around all the SL hints and do a proper retrofutiristic W198 on the roofline. Preferably on the whole car.
Wanna blow your mind? Watch my W198 "Revelations" episode and look for the scene shot in the car with just the greenhouse visible. It's indistinguishable from a Porsche 356 and very close to a 911. So, technically, it's on brand!
13:48 Ding dong the witch is dead!
why the hate for motortrend ?
Jason used to work for them. I think he might have been let go as part of a "let's pivot to cheap crap" move?
Have you ever read Motor Trend??
@@simonmacmullen9102 No, no, I very much left on my own. After having given the company six full months to fix some simple org-chart issues. I've never gone into public detail about it, but me and Motor Trend were just not a match.
Hey Jason, you can K-swap an 86. Just sayin.
Hello
Imagine shitting on a sponsorship of a tire brand from a country that is known for it abundance of well skilled engineers like THE NETHERLANDS? It's not like some cheap-ass Chinese LingLongDing tire company.
Not the best tested compared to the A-tiers like Michelin or Conti, but very well balanced for the pricepoint compared to those same A-tier brands which are much more expensive.
8:58 I for one would greatly appreciate if you got a ball deodorant sponsor. That would give you the opportunity to use your van gyna in the ad read. That would be delightful.
Omg yes this god damn update ruined photos on iPhones. Infuriating trying to find albums or search for pics.
Why hello
I don't think Derek likes van jyna.
I don't understand the "your parents buy you a car" concept. That does not happen were I live.
Every car company person is spineless. If they can't win, then they won't participate. They are wrong, they are missing the point. It's about emotion, or an emotion. Pit a 2cv against a ford focus sti. Outcome? Ford wins, then ask yourself, what would i take on a vacatuon during summer on a coast village for the short hop between house and beach??😊
The overly drawn out Fredestein tire ads camouflaged as anecdotes are indeed annoying. Do a quick ad read, move on. I am growing tired of sitting through 5 mins of no-name tire nonsense.
Yer not much if yer not Dutch. Vredestein tires are great. It’s good they’re sponsoring the pidcast- it’s a good fit and most enthusiasts don’t know anything about them. For many many years they were the only mfgr of tires for pro cycling that insisted clinchers and tubes were superior to tubulars and cement- something whether true or not is now widely accepted in the pro peloton.
