    My wife and I have a super abundance of cucumbers from just six plants. The vines also take up considerable garden space. You may have to thin yours out if they all live. We found a great, simple recipe for refrigerator pickles to store the excess cukes that works well (youtube videos).

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  10 років тому

      377499 Yeah, we are going to see which ones are strongest and cull the smaller ones to make more space. Give em to neighbors or something.

    Love what you've done with the place. Quite the transformation! I've done some gardening over the years in the U.S. and I'd imagine that the P.I. is similar except you'll be growing things year round and expect plants to grow like crazy and be VERY prolific. I know that cucumber plants can be huge producers. Four or five plants will usually sustain the average family. Green beans typically grow like crazy and L O N G runners. There are bush varieties, no telling what you have. Something for them to climb on will be essential or they'll take over. Okra I'm not that familiar with but I'd think you have enough for an army. If your production matches your plants, you'll have a nice cash crop for the local market. Good luck!

    Hi Ned and Michelle
    Glad you found some good culture there in Pinas. Living there really will make you appreciate life a bit more, especially living in the states. I go home once a year to stuff my face with all the Pinoy food. Anyway, you commented about the banana tree was chopped down by the workers building your house. For the banana tree once it bears fruit, it automatically shoots a couple of new plants and the main plant starts to die.So that's probably why they chopped it down because it will eventually. Thank for sharing your day with us viewers, I miss it already. Take care

    Don't burn the garden waste, use it as fertilizer instead, you just need to store it away from the house (maybe somewhere near the wall to "Toms") for a while until it decomposes

    Use the electric outlet for the Jacuzzi you place over the burn pile spot. To avoid birds from pecking your tomatoes, place water bowls near the plants. They are actually going for the moisture, not the fruit.

    Hi Ned and Michell: What you called Malangai is actually Moringa and is also known as Drumsticks Tree. The 2ft 6" long beans scraped and cut 2" each can be cooked with Beef or Lentils which tenderizes and flavours the beef. Only the pulp is eaten. The therapeutic effect is it dilates narrowed arteries and brings down Blood Pressure almost immediately. It is common in India, Burma, Malaysia and Thailand and I grow 2 large trees 20ft tall in my Perth home. The leaves are added into a traditional Burmese savoury soup with fish paste and dried prawns onion and garlic. It may be crushed in a pestel & mortar for the juice. You have very rich soil full of Sulphate of Potash and compost from centuries of fires and vegetation. The spikey brooms are also used in India and Burma for concrete paths and wet areas. The sticks are the spines of long narrow palm strips. Nice home and good size yards. Best wishes from Perth, Western Australia.

      Philippine Dreams If you don't mind, what do you do for living? The reason I ask is because I have worked enough, and made decent. Your before and after pictures show the work you have put into it.
    My back was hurting just thinking about trying to do the same when I get to Dumaguete.
    The results are worth it of course, but if I have a similar yard, I may need to hire someone to help me get everything in order.
    You could always hire yourself out as a "gardening consultant" of course....

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  10 років тому

      Al Russell Well, it's a lot easier cuz Michell and I are sharing the work. And I fall seriously short as a gardening consultant. Like I said in the video, I don't really know what I am doing - just doing a lot of google searches and watching other folks putting gardens together on UA-cam. :)

    I do know cucumbers are very sensitive better to plant the seeds where you want them to grow if disturbed they not do so well and transplanting them will disturb them: the green beans if are the climbing type just attach string or wire to the wall and let them climb up the wall the okra will be big and they need much room so not put another one near the ones you have already okra will be big beautiful plants with big flowers on them, i suggest zucchini it is so good you will love this.

    you could try starting sometype of compost area or bin. kitchen waste , lawn clippings and other organic waste is good. get some chickens or fatten up a pig "lechon baboy yummy" you need the animals for fertliser to mix with your compost after a while your garden should produce enough to keep the fertiliser cycle going... our house is on samal island mindanao . we havent made the move to pi yet...................cheers frank and rowena

    Coffee first lol then gardening . I grow a lot of stuff best way is to give it a try . some of the new plants if you grow them in the house first you have to harden them to the direct sun light for a few days in the shade out side before planting them in the soil. I grow at home lots of squash five different types lots of garlic and green onions. Tomatoes potatoes egg plants . I also have pear tree two plum trees four apples two avocado trees three lime four orange two banana trees.
    As you can see I love to garden lol have fun working in the garden its a great enjoyment to work with your hands .
    Take care have a great week bye for now.

    you should consider planting vegetables a month apart meaning plant 3 tomatoes plants this month then next month so u keep getting harvests so u don't end up with a lot one time and bam that's it, organize it so u have harvests of everything every 2-4 weeks

    You could use mix that pile of ashes to the soil around your plants. Makes the soil more alkali and ash has nitrates to.

    Don't burn your yard waste. You can compost them. There are a lot of "how to" videos on youtube.
    Try to learn about permaculture if you are interested in gardening.

    where did you buy the seedlings? are nursery common in the philippines?

    • @PhilippineDreams
      @PhilippineDreams  10 років тому +1

      Batibot étoile We actually bought the seeds and started them in wet paper towels.

    • @doomaster4
      @doomaster4 10 років тому

      Philippine Dreams The seeds don't need to be started in paper towels you can kill them by too much water or by drying out the towel the trays are a good way to get the seeds started. Get some corn seed sent from the US i don't care for the phil corn its too chewy and no taste. The soil looks thick kinda clay like you get better air and water if the soil is loose. Some plants don't like to be near certain other plants because of the nutrients that are used. Try not to plant the same plants in the same area do a rotation because some plants use more of certain nutrients than other plants and the rotation allows the nutrients to replenish. You might be able to do strawberry if it gets cooler in the winter time. If you do onions or lettuce I think it would be better in a planter since you have a lot of snails or has that started to go down? You could do sweet potatoes in that ground phil eat the young leaves don't rem what it was called and get a pitchfork and shovel you can dig up the potatoes. Your reno. is looking good its a lot of work but the place looks way better. Have you checked your plugs and switches for rust and other signs they are going bad esp since it looks like its very humid or wet.
