That’s a bummer. I believe in the manual Toyota recommends engaging 4WD once a month to keep things working and lubricated. I engage 4WD hi, lo, and differential lock monthly.
thaks yeah and I do just that I put it in 4WD on the 1st week of each month to get fluids moving it states 10 miles but its not good to drive on payment in 4wd with no snow so I drive down the block maybe 3-4 miles...
On the newer Generation Toyota Tacomas, there is a small electrical box on the front of the front differential (transfer case) that is held in by 4 screws. This piece is under the skid plate that is under the front of the vehicle and has an air tube and an electrical connector on it. Normally there is a sealant between the electrical connector and the differential that you have to use a rubber mallet to disconnect. You will lose gear oil during this process. Normally, inside the electrical actuator the motor or some of the electrical components will have rattled loose, gotten debris inside it, or has generally malfunctioned. Once the actuator is off, you can normally refurbish it with a few simple steps to repair the issues.
I usually activate my 4 wheel drive high and low as well as rear locker every 2 months. It likes to get stuck if you don't use it often. You can activate 4 hi on the highway up to 60 mph. - missing spyderfly guy
although I agree more tech stuff in vehicles make it more complicated anything and everything mechanical breaks too lol..my dad always said its the bell and whistles that break 1st lol
Sorry to hear about your issue, vehicle issues always suck. Hopefully it is covered under warranty. Amazingly loose gas caps can cause a multitude of issues. Vehicles aren't simple anymore.
yes, sadly...as you will see soon its NOT covered under warranty...but yes your right if it turns out to be a warranty issue they dont charge the card on file for the rental
Same thing happened to my Chevy truck didn't use the 4wd system in like 3 years try to use it it freaked out but it wasn't that bad. They cleared everything reset it they then manually actuated it on the lift and it worked fine after. They told me to engage it at least once every 2 months preferably every month.
The actuator is probably full of water and locked up the motor. They are crap, got rid of mine. Got a jeep gladiator and now in shop a month and they still havent even looked at my truck yet. Differential full of metal shavings in it.
@cutlerylover i disagree, the wrangler and gladiator still have the ingredients, the rest yes. The gladiator destroys those tacomas. Drives better, better throttle response, better offroad more comfortable, more modularity. I owned a 2018 and 2020 tacoma, The Nissan and gladiator both are better drivers imo, Toyota started selling their name in 2016 with the new Tacoma when they switched from 4.0s to 3.5. It may last longer but I'm not convinced of that anymore either.
@jglassman1122 i have 4 in the family with one of them with 250k miles with NO issues whatsoever. All orginal parts other than maintaining. It definitely feels punky compared to the tacoma even though on paper they look similar. Not sure what you mean other than people on the net, personally ive had good luck with them.
Toyota service department can be horrible. I had a warranty issue denied and I had to fight it and have them bring a Toyota rep in and then they finally ended up covering the issue. This was on a 22 Tacoma TRD off-road. I knew the warranty issue that they were denying was bullshit as I’m in the industry, but I was told many lies by the service manager, and I had to escalate.
On Friday 13th No less Poor jeff a faulty 4WD actuator, a problem with the transfer case control module, an issue with the wiring harness connected to the actuator, attempting to engage 4WD while moving too fast, or simply not following the correct procedure for engaging the system (like not being in neutral or moving too
This is alarming. I’m just about to hit 24,000 on mine. I’m curious how often do you engage four-wheel-drive the manual recommends doing it at least once a month and driving for 10 miles I believe I have come across another video or two with the actuator switch breaking.
No need to worry tyhis turned out to NOT be a toyota problem at all..new video coming soon, however research does show on some 3rd gens the actuator solder points can come off and nmeed to bne re soldered but its not all thaty common considering how many were made...
turns out this is NOT a reliability issue at all the trucks still 10% reliable ands I did NOT have the pay for the rental they comped it even though this was NOT covered under warranty since its not their fault...
I would drive it to place and I think it’s something electrical with shifting in to 4x4 ur crazy u should have rented a U-Haul truck for 22 dollars a day not 50 dollars a day what about miles do u have to pay that on that car
@@downsouth701 ive never cried about any car problems...Im just sharing stuff on the internet like everyone else, any vehicle can have problems and does any specific vehicle can be a lemon no matter who made it or where it was made, but overall you cant argue with thew fact that some specific types of cars and trucks are way more likely to be a good vehicle where as others are more likely to have problems...Nissan as a company has more problems than Toyota thats not made up thats a fact...so when I ought this truck I wanted reliability, it was on top of my list...as of today I know what the problem was and it has nothing to do with toyota...or reliability...this truck is still 100% reliable...

@cutlerylover I believe you! Just got my first Toyota and that beauty is, well, a beauty. The 4wd is amazing, hoping yours gets fixed up on warranty, as it should be

I can't believe you have to pay for the loaner, that's crazy.
if it turns out to be a problem covered under warranty they will comp the loaner...
This is what scares me about all these non manual transfer case vehicles these days.
Yeah just say no

My 1991 Toyota Pickup: lock hubs, move transmission stick into 4hi or 4lo, no problems. Technology isn't always the answer.🤦♂️🤣
Do you know what technology is exactly?

Sorry to hear about your issue, vehicle issues always suck. Hopefully it is covered under warranty. Amazingly loose gas caps can cause a multitude of issues. Vehicles aren't simple anymore.
Hopefully this story doesn’t turn out like the time you tried to get a new oil gasket for your Monte. Lol
lol to my defense I didnt know the "mechanic" would try to hoist the engine out without disconnecting anything at all hahahah
Can you tell me where you got that balisong Key Keychain in the video you made 16 years ago
Have you been engaging the 4wd system every 1000 miles to circulate the oils and activate the system like the manual says?
I’d be absolutely ripshit mad if that happened to a new vehicle. Is it time to get the OBS Chevy back?
Why are you paying for a rental? If the malfunction for your truck is covered under warranty, will they reimburse you?
yes, sadly...as you will see soon its NOT covered under warranty...but yes your right if it turns out to be a warranty issue they dont charge the card on file for the rental
Good luck man, hope they figure all this bs out .
Hey, at least 4WD is a recreational thing for you. Where I live I'm in 4WD all day just to get around town lol
well its needed for snow, thats a BIG reason I got a truck
Sorry to hear that.

Don't worry Jeff, I got you.. "And I'll see you tomorrow with a brand new video, take care!"
Maybe try reversing several feet to see if you can get it to engage?
I swear new/newer vehicles are mostly nothing but a pain, too many complex things that can go wrong. I'll stick with my 2004 lol.
Well that is BS- that's a brand new truck. The whole point of that truck was to have 4wd for winter and for off road. How incredibly irritating.
Crazy how Toyota quality can’t be trusted any more
Hate to hear that after watching this im going to hesitate the next time I have to put my 22 Ford ranger in four-wheel drive LOL😅
