    Your honesty, vulnerability and authenticity, in your position of authority, is refreshing. Hopefully, as more professionals speak up, there will be less stigma attached to health, mental health and addictions.

      Same here. I just spent 7 days in a behavioral health unit for the first time. It saved my life. Started lithium and responding well. The doc recommended Unquiet Mind as the first book I should read after discharging. It's incredible and SO relatable.

      Me too, it is fantastic. Not long after I read it, I had a breakdown about 4 years ago and was hospitalized. I asked my doctor there if I could try lithium, and I've been on it ever since, and these 4 years have absolutely been the most stable, peaceful, and productive of my entire life. I feel eternally indebted to Jamison and I am so glad I took the initiative to ask for lithium that day. I also bought a copy of the book for my dad, who is also bipolar, and he loved it as well.

    Dr. Kay is amazing! Her book is one of the most beautiful texts I have already read. I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder after a hospitalization this year, almost 5 years after I have finished my PhD in chemistry. It has been difficult times. I spent the last 18 months sleeping 15h/day, so tired that I couldn't get out of bed. People used to tell me I am lazy. In the best case scenario, they tell me I needed antidepressives...but they didn't work with me (not in the last years...I have depression since childhood). But then I remember Dr. Kay and her amazing book and life...and I start to believe that I can get control back of my own life too. Thanks for exist Dr. Kay! You really inspire me to moving on! God bless you!

    I admire Kay Redfield Jamison immensely. Her book changed my life. I wish I could have a conversation with her about mental illness and her thoughts on Bipolar 2 since it is not talked about often when people speak on bipolar.

      Hi bro, I'm also biplor 2 patient last 14 years I'm facing this issue but I can treat by following medicine lamitor, lithium, ssri, amisulpride. But amisulpride reduced my sexual desire, so my doctor prescribed instead of those medications lamitor, lithium, oxcarbazepine, zonisamide, and sertraline 25 mg, but my mood has not stabilised yet. Almost one month completed. Can you suggest how to get Kay Red Jamison an appointment in India?

    It is a new journey for me and my partner, as we are falling apart. Constant mania dealing with doctors and medication, resisting lithium as an option from the doctor. A deep separation from who she was.. depression isn’t the primary problem it’s extreme mania. Being patient is very difficult. The mind is flooded with constant information.

    • @shahchoudhury5301
      @shahchoudhury5301 3 роки тому +1

      If you suffer from bipolar disorder, please do not resist lithium. It's a cycle of mania and depression and all are connected. What people do not realise, the consequences of mania leads to depression. The brain works in mysterious ways, when your deep down that rabbit hole of depression, the brain goes into protective mode and pushes you back to mania. To control the moods, medication is a must so demolish the ideology of not needing medication because the results could be destructive.

    • @Authenticallyher1
      @Authenticallyher1 2 роки тому +2

      @@shahchoudhury5301 my partners doctor wanted to use another medication not indicated for mania but depressive illness like trulicity.
      I found lithium as the gold standard for mania or mixed bipolar 1. I had to fight for lithium as the needed medication and I had to work very hard to help my partner understand and agree to lithium. We are on track to start lithium next week.
      Personally this has been a devastating change and new diagnosis of a 57 yr old women, symptoms didn’t start until over 50. Very odd to me but it is what it is. It’s ruined her work life, personal life and it’s ruining our life as well. Like you said the toll is deep.
