We had a restaurant on Wilkins Ave, near Intervale, Charlotte, Westchester, Jennings, Freeman st. etc. etc. I saw all these gangs when I was growing up. It was all mostly petty crime stuff, some drug dealing, and general small time mayhem. For the members, it was a way to have a "cohesive" feeling in a world of poverty. The ghetto gangland mentality was a way for bored teenagers to feel like a force to reckon with.

Willie Gordon - I didn’t say selling dope was petty crime. I listed some of their activities, those including some petty crimes, some dope selling, some store robberies, some boosting, some car radio stealing, some jumping of people for their few dollars, some gang banging...

I heard it had gotten to the point where the NYPD would not even go into the South Bronx unless they had heard about a dead body.

@@jimstrope701 - I think there was so much crime going on that cops just couldn’t be concerned with every minor incident. I did also hear about some cops just not showing up “so quickly” … and there were also cops “on the take” … it all becomes “tales from the hood” at some point. There also were some very good cops obviously.

@@avp0713 I've never been to NYC, I'm from California. I was just curious. I had heard what NYC was like in the 1970s. Maybe NYC is just a microcosm of what will eventually happen everywhere else in the country.
There was the economic collapse here in 2008. That is what people in NYC went through in the 1970s. Once these foreign countries like Japan and W. Germany rebuilt themselves and rebuilt their factories, manufacturers in the US had to throttle back on production.
A lot of factories in NYC were shut down. A lot of unemployment, especially in the Bronx. I remember hearing stories, a new born baby that was killed and eaten by a rat. Chaos, robberiee, fires. I mean the South Bronx looked almost like Europe in WWII, according to the documentary that I saw.
Then you had the gangs. I have a hard time seeing how the Ghetto Brothers were a gang. Maybe they fit that profile. Maybe they were in that category. But even the other gangs in the S. Bronx back in those days said that the Ghetto Brothers were more like some kind of community outreach thing. Weren't the Ghetto Brothers the good guys? Their music was alright. I noticed you can't "like" them on Facebook. I guess they are categorized as a gang.

the definition of grimy will change with every generation... i spent the 80's-90's in Flatbush Brooklyn. was wild and wooly, nobody wild's out anymore. there's still grimy behavior and crime but no more crews of 50 heads rolling down the street. and pretty much every neighborhood except maybe east new york and brownsville has completely changed. NY is full of non-NY'ers.

This is gonna sound like the silliest comment and might even confuse some Americans but when I was this age in the 80s the closest we came to this was walking around the streets with axes and machetes on our way to cut up some lantana up the mountain looking for snakes and also having some pretty hard core stone throwing battles in the rainforest when we built tin hideouts. But the spirit was probably the same as these guys, it's just the biggest difference was in Australia it's the animals that are deadly so hence the heavy duty weaponry for kids that wasn't seen as unusual in the bush. When I was in heavy areas of North American cities I didn't feel worried by people compared to things back home I've dealt with - it wasn't unusual for a poisonous snake to slide over your foot out walking in the bush so people seem easier in comparison. Sorry if this upsets some egos here.

Yes we adopted the biker look, we even wore MC's (motorcycle boots). During the early 70's I was a member of the Immortals & Spades. I knew many Skulls that didn't act like the morons in the video. Real gang members didn't show off in front of cameras, that was a definate no-no in gang culture. I don't know where they found those guys.

Interesting, I had heard that the gangs in NYC were local and a lot of them were multi-ethnic. Out here in California, it was more of a regional thing and they were along ethnic lines. You guys had more style and class than the people who are out there these days.
I remember that movie the Warriors. I saw it at age 9. The Riffs, the Lizzies, the Warriors. People I didn't want to mess with.

      @ornamentalyouth 2 роки тому

@@jimstrope701 i'm under the general impression that they drew upon who was in the neighborhood so they were generally not so multi ethnic, but that was not a rule set in stone. like there were white and spanish guys in the black spades for example, but i think it was the exception and not the rule.

Yeah really - check your history. I love the style of the old time gangsters - they did drive bys with Tommy Guns (Thompson Machine Guns). There is nothing like two men that have a beef fighting it out but that only happens in the movies usually the guy winning the fight gets jumped by the other guys friends if your with a bunch of guys that are like minded (criminals - thugs etc.) it is never one on one for long.

It may be hard to believe, but he stated exactly how he lured the girls up the the roof of the abandoned building, then raped each of them, then threw them down the elevator shaft. When he heard their whimpers he ran down the stairs, in his words, "...to finish the job...I stabbed them until I didn't hear nothing." So much murders in the Bronx back then, it was just another story on the 6 o'clock news.

I was a member of the Seven Immortals part of 1971 and in the Black Spades from 1971 to 1975. I actually knew many Savage Skulls, they didn't act like the idiots on this video. And the music was horrible & suggestive. I grew up in the Soudview/Bronx River section of the Bronx. Did alot of hang'in around Simpson St, Intervale Av, Boston Rd and Crotona Pk..even spent time in the Savage Skulls hangout on Westchester Av near Whitlock Av. These gang videos are so phoney.

At least you survived. Bad times, fires, unemployment and chaos. I had heard stories. Things I could not of imagined growing up in Northern California.
I kinda wonder sometimes if what happens in NYC is just a microcosm of what will eventually happen in the rest of the country. I mean, you had these foreign countries like Japan and W. Germany which rebuilt themselves. They could make and sell things. They were back in the game.
That meant that people no longer had to buy American. This meant a lot of factories shutting down in NYC. A lot of unemployment, 30% in the Bronx in the 1970s.
The state of California is pretty much in the same situation now that NYC was in then. Businesses shutting down, violence and chaos. We even have fires. They are everywhere. 🔥
