I have a Suhr Strat, with Lollar Dirty Blonde Pickups. I am Very Impressed. Phenomenal vintage Strat Sounding pickups. Better too-Low vs. too High with the Pickup height. This was great information.
Thanks Jason. There are MANY demos on pickup adjustment but yours is definitely the clearest. Now I know what to listen for. BTW really nice tone on that set & NICE chops too!
ya man. I installed a set of your tele specials on a custom built walnut tele clone I built and I gotta tell you, I been playing for 40 years and those are the best sounding pups I've ever heard on a tele. They are magical. Thanks dude.
Hello brother! I finally got on here to check out your stuff. Always great things coming from the ole shop! Great work brother. See you up town! I may stop by when I get over town Tacoma next week! Always. K
When you ask a pickup expert who they think of when they think of pickup experts most of them will mention this man. Jason Lollar. Here is what he has to say about adjusting your pickups. Thanks Jason.
Mr. Lollar, (sorry my english) Thanks for your advices. You helped me a lot with my Fender Stratocaster! I want to learn how to set up my Strat by myself. I saw your video about the intonation (saddles) and it was very helpful. In the city I live, we don't have an autorized fender dealer/store or a good luthier that can do the "dirty job". But I thank you to taking some of your precious time to help people like me. A big hug from Brazil.
Mate, i just want to let you know im so glad that you have made your videos. I have learned so much from what i have already seen. I just bought a strat and have been trying to find helpful clips relating to single coil pickups, and i find your info the best. And the fact that you reply to your viewers questions is awesome. Good on ya and keep it up.
I bought a set of regal Humbuckers for my Tele thinline project from this guy and I am not a great player but everyone knows I built a great Guitar and it is because his pickups are the best
A cure for "STRATITUS" is in the height adjustments. I lower them without an amp at first to reduce that warbling overtone that happens as you move higher on the fingerboard. My '61 Strat sounds just the way I like it! Thanks for this video.
Ill keep an eye out for it, from what i remember i think they used tinted laquers on mylar and layered it that way for thickness and pattern it was a few years back though
I just finished installing a matched pair of Lollar Imperials in a PRS CU22, and what an improvement. These things have such a woody, earthy tone. The Dragon II's in the PRS are great, but kind of generic. The Lollars are like they're ALIVE. They have that same feeling as the P90's in my 67 SG. Worth every cent.
Thanks for the response. It's exactly as you describe it - the bridge pup it slightly stronger but when set lower sounds very close to original. The neck pup DEFINITELY sounds better. I've played with the Regals in for a bit and that's the conclusion. A bit more twang, no mud in the tone, a bit more highs. It's high time I decided which set to keep in and which pickup to put in the other Tele waiting to be played. Really hard matter - where do I need more twang?
@LollarGuitars - You are very welcome! And how true you are, there are so many varibles to 'tone', how could one sit and dictate the absolute values for them all, and that includes pickup height! Good Playing and Lord Bless!!!
just installed a high wind imperial in my '94 les paul custom.. boy oh boy..there is an overload of harmonics in those notes tons of detail.. as a matter of fact, i had to lower the pickup and the 'b' string is now a bit lower in the pickup than the slug one..
@ LollarGuitars I'm in Tacoma as well (Fife). Been meaning to visit your shop on Vashon for awhile. Now that it's pickup-search time, I foresee that happening sooner than later ;)
Good video. Put away your ruler, crank up your amp and grab a screwdriver. Your ears will tell you when the height is right. Tweak each one until you're happy with the volume balance and the treble/bass balance on each individual pickup. If you have to err, a little too low is usually better than a little too high.
Jason, have you known John Fadden? He lived in west Seattle when I knew him and I know he lived on the island off and on. He used to build guitars as well. Had several made for Boogie bodies back in the mid 70's.
I have a set of Lollar strat specials in one of my strats, and I love them. Even for a slightly hotter pick up they still have very nice clarity. They are the most organic pickups I've played. check 'em out!
Just bought a Special neck pickup for my Strat and it sounds amazing! As long as I stay away from Neck+Middle (Position 2). That combination sounds anemic and very nasally..... And yes, I did just order 2 Lollar pickups to hopefully get a perfect match!
Sounds like they might be wired out of phase...? I know most people find that our pickups are out of phase with stock Fender pickups, some other manufactures' products work perfectly with ours. There are no standards in the design, so each manufacturer determines their own standards to build to, which can either work fine with others', or can be out of phase, not hum cancel. or both when combined in the "in-between" selector positions of 2 and 4.
Yes, yes! You are correct, out of phase. Rewiring black/white corrected the issue... Regardless, I cannot wait to get my other two pickups from you guys
I actually bought a set of your WRHB pickups and swapped them with the original WRHBs in my 74' Deluxe Tele and just can't decide which set to keep in. I guess your pickups sound a little bit clearer and keep a bit more of twang which I love. So I guess I'll keep your set in the vintage Deluxe and the original 74' neck WRHB will go to the japanese Custom Tele (WRHB/Single) But it's a really tough decision, lol. Before buying the Lollards I had no problem. This only shows how great your pups are!
Hey Jason. This is a really helpful video, as is your video series for swapping strat pickups. Thanks for making the effort. With that said, I'm interested in finding out more about your unique Lollar guitar designs. Where can I find links?
Hello sir, I have a question. I own a SIRE S7 HSS guitar. Its pickups are a bit too hot. I want smooth clean tone from my guitar just like fender stratocasters. That is why I want to change my pickups. I want to install Lollar dirty blond pickups on my guitar. But, I am not sure will the Lollar pickups fit in my SIRE S7 guitar's pickguard. I don't see any information about SIRE S7's pickup dimension on the internet. Can you please, help me on this regard?
While I'm not familiar with that particular model, they look to be standard-sized pickups, which ours are as well. They should be a direct drop-in replacement. But you're better off contacting the guitar manufacturer to verify before purchasing the pickups. Also, you'll need to get a different pickguard, though, if you want to put a singlecoil in the bridge position as well. Again, not being familiar with that specific guitar, I can't tell you whether the pickguard is different from a standard Strat pickguard with any certainty, but it does appear to be a bit different. You may need to source an s/s/s pickguard from the manufacturer to accommodate a singlecoil bridge pickup.
man love the classic Tortise pickguard sunburst look, I still wanna look into getting a sienna sunburst strat but ill definetly getting tortise to replace the stock white pickguard, just doesnt look right to have a bright coloured guitar like sienna with a white pickguard theres not enough contrast for my liking
Howdy Jason, Just want you to know that i find the info you give is right on & you nail it! there seems to be a lot of (Myths) of this and that on guitars & many distorted way out unnecessary things people suggest should be done to electric guitars...?..Thanks for keepin it real -very refreshing Can i ask your point of view on copper shielding-i see that some people go ape shit on their guitars covering everything obsesivly ? Whats your view on this? All the best,Luis...........Sydney-Australia
You mentioned no right or wrong setting, but yoiu never made mention of weather or not to make one side of the pickup higher than the other. What's youir thoughts on that? Thanks for the very helpful video.
"NO MAGIC NUMBER." Good for you, My Good Man - I see many people that have a good tone, yet freak out when someone says: "Well, that isn't up to specs.". Fuck specs, they are good for a start, but only that, let your ears be your guide - GOOD VIDEO!!!
Same thing for me here I have an original 77 Thinline Custom equiped with the original WRH and one Nash TL-72 Thinline Custom with Lollar Regal and that's very very close and as you say a little more twang with the Lollar which I really love ! I was wondering whether is it possible to approach Peter Green out of phase sound with the Lollar Regal ?????
One of my Strats has the wobbling sound only on the A string and the pick ups are so far away from the strings it drives me nuts. All 3 of the pick ups are almost flush with the pick guard and it goes away but if I raise it even a tiny bit it comes back. Could it have something to do with the pick ups being wired badly or something?
I actually had the same kind of thing going on with a set up pickups I just put in a strat- not Lollars btw; this was the classic David Gilmour setup of a Duncan SSL-5, CS69 & Fat 50. Has the orange drop capacitor in there too. Certain areas of the fretboard have this warbly sort of sound. Not sure if I even like the overall sound of the pickups. That's kind of what brought to this page- checking out some of the Lollar stuff. I've got 3 Teles, & each one has it's own charm, & regardless of the output, they all still bark & bite & are very controllable. But this strat just isn't giving me the juju with this currant setup :/
Hey Jason I got some lovely Jazzmaster pickups from you, however I need to bring the pole piece up for my high E string as its a little weak compared to the other one strings, can I just push it out from the under side of the pickup or not?
The pole pieces are glued in place and there isn't a whole lot of spare magnet to move - they're quite short, compared to something like a Strat or Tele. Aside from this, the coil is wrapped around the poles. I really wouldn't suggest moving the poles, as there's just too much risk associated. Most folks can get a good balance by simply adjusting the mounting screws.
burrencrawler the best way really is to adjust the mounting screws. If you push the magnets, you could damage the pickup and void the warranty in the process.
there is danger to adjusting pickups. my stock pickup had that damn medical tubing. the damn tubing got stuck when i raised the pickup too far and it took minute to wrestle it off to swap it for springs.
Hey now, I was up in Seattle and the Hoodsport area last august and tried to find out about John. Nobody had even heard anything about him since I moved 33yrs ago. Was wondering if you knew what has become of him after our last contact. By the way, I'm gonna redo my 78 Les Paul Deluxe with a pair of your pickups. Thats my X-mas present to myself this year.
Thanks for the very informative video! My pickup is an active one and it has too much attack and sounds a bit thin. If I get your idea right, I have to decrease the height of the pickups for giving it more bass and midrange? (You've mentioned it in the video, but I'm not a native English speaker and there had been lots of reverb.)
I hope it isn't true myself. He's a gifted craftsman. He did an overnight fret job on my 54 Epiphone Zepher. We drank several pots of coffee and in return I did hours of sanding the bodies of some of his guitars. I really liked the neck trhough design with the double trussrods and brass hardware he had made himself. Since I moved from Seattle he's one of the few people I still miss.
I am having some trouble with the sustain, could this be old strings. Maybe i need a sustainer pedal. guess i should have said i have a dean xm with some really light wood. could that be my problem.
i had a pretty nice esp axxion guitar everything as far as playability on it was flawless, except this one thing that was bugging the hell out of me. its that damn doppler effect you get when the neck pickup is too close to the string, it was only recognizable with my distortion on, but when it was on it was bad. i had a seymour duncan jb/jazz setup. good thing i know that know but i dont have the guitar...
Hey Jason, awesome video. i have a problem on my strat, when i plug it in through my amp it buzzes but the sound still comes out i have to lower the gain etc. But when i plug it into my computer through line 6 guitar port it buzzes alot, so much that you can hardly hear the actual guitar. is this a problem with my pick ups? (i have messed around with my pichups before such as lowering and highering it) please help me thanks! =D
@LollarGuitars WOWWWW!!! lets hang out sometime hahaha. jk but i'll certainly keep you in mind next time i need guitar help haha. any chance you're hiring? :]

OMG, thank you for posting this. Much needed information.
Thanks For the tips. It's good that you explain almost everything your doing.
This was pretty helpful. Thanks. Saving my pennies for a High Wind Imperial Bridge Pup for my SG!
:-) Great sound, great playing. Thank you.
@LollarGuitars Thanks for the reply and for the advice! I will experiment with the height of the pickup. I will recommend your video!
Ill keep an eye out for it, from what i remember i think they used tinted laquers on mylar and layered it that way for thickness and pattern it was a few years back though

Thanks for the answer, I extensively read about the mod on humbucker but I was wondering if WRH could do the same

Your string gauge (if they are too skinny) will contribute to this problem. What gauge are you using????
I like how he checks his watch to see how many B3's there are on the island.

there is danger to adjusting pickups. my stock pickup had that damn medical tubing. the damn tubing got stuck when i raised the pickup too far and it took minute to wrestle it off to swap it for springs.
That's one of several reasons we suggest using springs instead of rubber tube. But, as with most things, it always comes down to player preference.

Hey did you ever rewound pickups for a guitar that Michelle Shock played for a benefit concert in 2009?
i had a pretty nice esp axxion guitar everything as far as playability on it was flawless, except this one thing that was bugging the hell out of me. its that damn doppler effect you get when the neck pickup is too close to the string, it was only recognizable with my distortion on, but when it was on it was bad. i had a seymour duncan jb/jazz setup. good thing i know that know but i dont have the guitar...

I have a 1986 Japanese Strat, what height would you guys recommend for each pup? thanks a lot
I've alnico 5 pickups they sound good all the way flush to the pickguard. Otherwise my strings go out of tune.
Did you say vashon island? Like across from Tacoma?
@LollarGuitars when i put it back together i didnt no where the springs go (inside)
if u could help with that please
I would just like to say that your pickups are second only to your beard...
and your videos aren't to shabby either!
Rock on!
why is the staggered pole better than even?
what do you use to measure such small lenghts? a ruler is way too big...
so is he not playing with ZZ Top anymore?
@LollarGuitars Hey, being accused of either ain't a bad thing! lol
lollar 52s on my warmoth tele
I need a Lollar, Lollar, Lollar is what i need.
If i share with you my story would share your Lollar with me ?
my pickups are all loose now can u help please
What kind of control pots do you use?
@LollarGuitars WOWWWW!!! lets hang out sometime hahaha. jk but i'll certainly keep you in mind next time i need guitar help haha. any chance you're hiring? :]
@LollarGuitars forget where i seen it it may have been on youtube or it might have been on stewart macdonalds site but i think i seen a vid on making tortise for pickguards.
@CKS5000 i changed out my pickups and it just about doubled my sustain
nice beard
Sounds like Nicholas Cage. Definitely doesn't look like him though.
