Why is sleying the reed so hard?

  • Sleying the reed used to seem like the easiest part or warping the loom. Somehow, the seemingly simple act of weaving something different (for me), has managed to make every single step of this double weave / double wide project impossibly difficult. Join me as I work out the problems.

"Half of weaving is troubleshooting". Indeed, my friend. Great job in the resolution finding and love your determination!

I repeat that quote all of the time. I whole heartedly believe it too! Weaving really requires good problem solving skills!

Sometimes the draw in at the fold resolves when the woven portion gets rolling around the sandpaper beam. The good thing about the AVL cloth storage system is that it keeps both layers even which doesn't always happen on a loom that has it roll up directly on the cloth beam. This is one recommendation for rotary temples. I have a set for each of my looms that were made by a loom company that is unfortunately doesn't exist anymore. The ones AVL has are industriall adaptions and they have replaceable parts. They are a bit finicky to set up but well worth it. I think they come with different ring sizes so the spikes on the rings can grip thicker yarns. The magic of the doublewidth invisible fold is helped by spacing the denting on the folding side but also, in my opinion, greatly helped by have the weft finer than the warp and using a weave structure like a 4/4 twill. I used to make mohair throws, loop mohair warp, and a brushed mohair weft. I could never find the fold. They were very fast to weave and mohair is amazing when dyed.

Thanks so much for the comment Margaret. You always have such valuable input. I may end up investing in some rotary temples! I remember you mentioning the thinner weft before. I am going to try using what I bought for this project, but if I have any extra warp left over maybe I will try using a thinner weft.
