    I feel like Depop resellers have ruined the thrift stores more than vintage stores. No hate to Depop resellers; I know it is a good way to support yourself.

    • @striketochill
      @striketochill 2 роки тому

      I mean yeah no hate but at the same time... hate. Because it's also taking away nice stuff from people who can only afford to shop secondhand. The thrift store used to be a way for people who can't afford "nicer" brands and clothing items to get them. Now there's only butt ugly stuff left because the resellers are buying everything for $4 and then upcharging the shit out of it. It can already be dehumanizing for lower income people to HAVE to shop secondhand and now they're only stuck with ugly or dated clothing? Sad.

  • @Sarahhh
    @Sarahhh 2 роки тому +25

    Yes your right.. all the resellers come first thing in the morning they’ll line up with the others and they get 80% of the cool things . As you already know I work at vv so I see it first hand when cashing them out. They will also hit other locations within a timely manner so if you get there 2 hours after opening chances are there won’t be much left. Regardless loved your ootd and always enjoy your thrifting videos 💕😄

      Wow, I didn't know it was that intense of a process, wow! It's a huge reason I closed my shop - I felt like I was adding the the problem and there are just SO many more resellers these days than there used to be. I feel like that's why I've shifted my content to home decor, just having zero luck thrifting these days!!

    • @ripewickedplum
      @ripewickedplum 2 роки тому

      Some resellers also work for VV or other thrift stores so they hide, steal or set aside the items they want and use their discount to then adjust the price in their own shop.

    • @striketochill
      @striketochill 2 роки тому

      What type of people are the resellers usually? Like are they young or older? What's like the #1 thing they're usually buying up? I'm so curious about them haha.

    • @Sarahhh
      @Sarahhh 2 роки тому

      @@striketochill they can be all ages! Mostly younger 18-30s but I have met some that were alot older like seniors for example. They will buy mainly vintage or whatevers tending from band tees, high end brands, Levis/Carhart anything you can think of really!

    • @Sarahhh
      @Sarahhh 2 роки тому

      @@ripewickedplum I wouldn’t doubt it but for vv workers we have to wait 48 hrs before buying something that is “new/coming out on that specific day” it has to hit the floor first..and if its anything worth buying chances are someone will get it before we can use our discount. If I were to shop at another location then yes i can buy whatever whenever but I might have to pay full price if im not able to use my discount. There’s a lot of rules when it comes to buying there actually you’d be surprised.

    I’m so happy to see you back at a thrift store again! That being said, I totally understand what you are saying about the thrift stores. I live in Niagara Falls,Ontario, I’m always excited to get there until I do and then there’s nothing. If there is something I’m interested in the prices are so high. They blame it on Covid but let’s face it, this stuff is donated no need to go that high, even if they have overhead and they donate to their charity, which by the way is a minimal percentage. There is a Goodwill here in the Falls that actually has their dressing room open, do they have want you want I don’t know but I will look out for you. I know their T-shirts are crap. But for my age group ( older) I have found some pretty good tops.

    IMO the trick to finding good vintage is to thrift in very rural places and at mom and pop stores. The closer you are to a major city, the less likely you are to find good vintage. Additionally, people in more rural areas generally have larger homes and more storage, so when their things end up in the thrift store it is more likely to have been collected over a longer period of time.

      I’m in DFW and I have to agree. I do great with home section, like decor only, but clothing it’s just the occasional sweater for me. No jeans, no tees, no dresses. It’s disappointing as it used to be so good not that long ago. But reselling is just such a HUGE thing now, and it’s great but also an aggressive crowd to be around in a thrift.

    It's not just you, I live in a small town about an hour away from two major metros and every weekend our thrift stores are clogged up with people buying cart fulls of things to resell. I go during the week and am friendly with the volunteers who always lament the fact that so many out of towners come through and pilfer the place. Not really in the spirit of reusing, being thrifty, and helping your community 😔

Did people just get the cleaning but out of their system last year? The U.S. thrift stores also have no fitting rooms. My question is, while that sucks, how does thrifting in thrift stores and trying on at home feel different than ordering through a service like ThredUp and trying on at home? Is it just the return policy that holds you up, or is it the fact that it’s more convenient to make a return via mail than going back to the store? Truly curious because I have never used a service like ThredUp and prefer to do it in person as well.
