I don't mean to nitpick because I know what he meant, but just for clarity I believe Steve meant to say (at 24:37) is that Ballistol has been around for over a century (not a decade). I am looking forward to the next part of this topic to really see how to care for the more intricate parts of the action. Great info!
For pads (Patches), get a yard of flannel from your wife's' favorite fabric shop, and cut it with trim shears to your favorite size. Lasts a long time, and works much better than the paper crap.
just watched this video for the first time.... got halfway through and started hearing about granite falls! subscribing for hopeful local videos to watch!
I shoot black powder loads loaded with plastic cup wads. Really hot water poured through the bores stripes the fouling and any plastic out of the bores like magic. I push some wads through and finish with Thompson Bore Butter while still warm.
Question, I just picked up O/U and after I leave the range when I get home do you take out the chokes before you run a snake cleaner or can you leave the chokes in the barrels while running the snake through it and then afterwards take out the chokes and spray with a lube like REM oil? Thanks for your advice, I'm watching the video as I ask this question. WHAT IS your recommendation on the best oil gun cleaning for an O/U? Did you say break oil?
I could write book on this subject. I think pistol shooting hurts your shotgun shooting abilities...however I think shotgun shooting HELPS your pistol shooting. In pistol shooting, you typically look back at the sights (that gets you into trouble with a shotgun). In shotgunning, you are looking at targets (that HELPS you in pistol shooting). Gil Ash of OSP Shooting School says there are 3 types of people who are difficult to teach: pistol shooters, engineers and accountants. I'm 2 of those.
John, I'm new to shotguns. Loved the content of the video. Could you share the two types/brands of cleaning rods you use at video time 21:50 and 26:20. The brush heads too? Searching the web is proving very painful. The number of cleaning products out there is just overwhelming.
a point: Auto Transmission Fluid is very similar to brake fluid, and can attack paint, hence the use of wheel gators by mechanics (to keep the paint safe!!), also many hydrocarbons (what oil and solvents are in chemistry terms) eats away some rubbers and plastics, which is what seal housings and o-rings in mechanical seals are made of, and WHY you MUST religiously go buy the O.E.M. lubricants for each part of the car engine, diff, transmission, air conditioner, etc. so I understand why the lube can't be used around the wooden parts, or attack the plastic in that case.
@Vapors750....Have you tried using Lock tight on your Choke Threads?..I'm just Kidding! Lol...I had a similar problem with my 686, turns out it was my fault..( not saying this is the case with yours though) after cleaning I wasn't making sure that the threads were completely dry and free of oil, ( in fact I was doing something really daft like smearing a small bit of oil around the inside threads thinking it was good for them, Doh! ) now I use some stuff called Clenzoil foam, it cleans great, drys really well, with a protective coating, and my chokes have never worked loose since!
ED'S RED. With the level of mixing involvement, and cautions here and there required. Just get a lotta Hoppies.. Which as we all known. What guy doesn't enjoy the Hoppies aroma after a day in the field. Everyone enjoys a round of I" Love the smell of Hoppies in the evening' Yeah my eyes started getting wide when he broke out the drill and buffing operation. I am not sure what degree of plastic would require this level of removal. If it's all that. RST makes some great paper case loads. You should qualify this with... Don't Try This At Home Kids' I can hear....Honey' where's my drill now' lmao Appears on reassembly the ejector rod which appeared to want to ride outward. Is now dependant on the inside of the closed receiver to ensure it's performance. With all the rounds it appears has went through this shotgun. This is simply a worn part, and it's time to get another set from Beretta. I am sure he has already considered that though.
Leave the chokes in. spray barrel cleaner pull through. Barrels done. Action : Wipe down with oily rag and a touch of vaseline on the key points. Remove chokes clean vaseline threads return to barrels. Done this for twenty years and nothing else on 525 for theist part of 20 years. No issue. Get the gun serviced once every two years. thousands of cartridges . A five minute job.
Brent--sorry but I don't know anything of the Stoeger Condor. I can say that at the registered shoots I have attended as an observer, I've never seen anything but Beretta/Browning/CG/Perazzi/Krieghoff/Blaser being used.
I'm no gun smith and I fully respect you as a gun smith BUT, steel wool spinning through your bore at 2000 rpm? That can't be good... And for the other guy using the red solvent all over the blueing on the outside of the barrels? The mineral spirits and acetone can't be good for the blueing. Over time (doing that every time after you shoot) I see that wearing away the blueing. Just saying.
roul3688 Well, it's not spinning at 2000 rpm and the 0000 steel wool is a lot softer than the chrome lining the barrels. It does not harm them in the least. If you go visit the shot gun forums you will find that this is a very popular method of cleaning the wad residue from the barrels and chokes. As far as using Ed's Red on metal parts, I have not seen any damage caused by the solvent. Just keep it off the wood and all is well.
if you cleaned your gun every time you shot that takes 15 mins at the most you wouldn't have gunk under the barrel's or in the receiver your gun would be cleaner
it seems your intention was more about droning on and on about your firearm "knowledge" rather then produce a precise tutorial of how to clean and maintain a shotgun. Shotgun cleaning and maintenance is a basic as it gets in terms of firearm maintenance. A instructional cleaning video should not be longer than it actually takes to thoroughly clean a shotgun
Hi John, can you tell me - I have a couple of months old Beretta 692, 500 rounds have gone through it to date. It remains pretty ( bordering on uncomfortably ) tight to open and close - particularly the last part of the snapping shut. I've kept it well lubed and it does not seemed to have loosened up much, if at all since new. Can you help me with this?
Hoppes ! I was trying to word what cleaner or lubricant will turn to varnish and harden over time. Hoppes. In defense, this skb 870 clone, didnt seem to have a box of shells through it, took work to disassemble, then cleaned and unsiezed bolt and firing pin. 25 yr old gun is brand new. Sorry, theres a touch of brag. Moo bad
Very thorough explanation. Like the chattiness of it. However, some of the chemicals you use are known carcinogens so you should ALWAYS where the correct PPE when using them. Filming in your amateur workshop is no excuse for not wearing it. Some people who don't know any better may be watching... Keep the instructional stuff coming though.
Hey Stevo.....do us all a favor....avoid buying the large 20 oz. cup Starbucks Dark Roast on the days you guys are filming. Folks everywhere are sayin' you talk way too much! You are going to end up with chronic laryngitis if you're not careful. May I suggest nothing larger than the 8 oz. cup? Or better yet...the Starbucks deCafe Light Roast won't keep you up all night babbling incessantly.......
UG did I hear the words WD40, and standing the barrels in the stuff? Barrel blue or blacking is in effect rust. WD40 removes rust. If you want silver ends to your barrels then WD40 it is, but I would not use WD40 anywhere near my guns.
So basically, you just pulled a snake through the barrel moving all the gunk from the barrel to the choke threads... I do not remove my chokes until LAST. Crud in your threads will definitely ruin your barrel and your chokes. Way to embarrass your guest there guy! Remember praise in public, criticize in private. Sorry I had to stop when you shoved steel wool down the barrel on a cleaning rod powered by a drill....goodbye!
Great video until 30.00 minutes in when the steel wool went up the bore. Steel wool may be softer than chrome but rubbing any soft materiel on to a hard one will always wear the hard metal first. Proof if you need it is take a look at car brake linings after you have worn out a few set of linings you will need to replace the drums/discs. John you will never shoot your gun out of proof but you will wear it out of proof. Don't do it.
Brake material is significantly harder than steel, it is just brittle because of the way it's manufactured. Take an old brake pad and try to drill into it with a HSS steel drill bit, it'll destroy your bit. It is IMPOSSIBLE for steel to damage the chrome lining, as the steel being softer CANNOT scratch it.
Funny because it is true. This video could have been 10 min instead of 40. All the steps they take are excessive. My Kreighoff stays clean and I do not take nearly the number of steps they do. No plastic residue in my barrels or chokes, and my receiver and the extractor area of barrels all stay very clean.
The guy behind should shut up and let the expert explain what and how to do it. If you wanna talk, do your own video how to do something.... Annoying....
Standing on the bore snake - I hadn't thought of that. Good tip. Thanks!
How do you make a hour long multi part over under cleaning video? This shouldn’t be longer than 5 minutes.
Lol the intro was nearly five minutes long
I'd leave the chokes in while cleaning the barrel. I don't want debris getting in the choke threads of the barrel when snaking and or cleaning
KCStewart most people would, most people wouldn’t make a multipart hour long series of how to clean one of the most basic modern guns either lol
I don't mean to nitpick because I know what he meant, but just for clarity I believe Steve meant to say (at 24:37) is that Ballistol has been around for over a century (not a decade). old t-shirts work for me. cut up in small squares.
just watched this video for the first time.... got halfway through and started hearing about granite falls! subscribing for hopeful local videos to watch!
38:20 and 39:20 cracked me up!! Seems like some great guys and fun to be around. Respect and appreciation from Kentucky. Keep it up guys. Subscribed
I shoot black powder loads loaded with plastic cup wads. Really hot water poured through the bores stripes the fouling and any plastic out of the bores like magic. I push some wads through and finish with Thompson Bore Butter while still warm.
Great video! Just went to town on my 682, thanks!
As a gunsmith i use wd 40 for bore cleaning and clp for oiling
Rem Oil or Ballistol and a bore brush thru the barrels followed by patches.. Power tools and steel wool should not be used to clean barrels.

I am having difficulties getting my wood stuck off of my Franchi Diamond O/U. Any thoughts?
Thank you

I have the opposite problem with my chokes on beretta; no matter how tight I tighten them the always come loose after the first 25 rounds.
Great video on cleaning, thanks Men!
Yes, paraffin oil is known as Kerosene in the US and Australia...or stove oil in Canada.
you guys shuld make a more deatailed vid about shotshell reloading just for no8 and no7 shots , what pouder and what wads shuld people use!!
Very interesting. When using the steel wool, was the brush a 'downsized' 20guage, or a full sized 12guage brush? Thanks!
The bore snake goes through the barrels dry?
Gordon Ho Yup.
sometimes I add some cleaner to the bushy end (before the bristles) works like a dream
how is cleaning in the red label vs other shotguns?
Ballistol is way older than 2003?
It’s a 686 Onyx Sporting with 32” barrels.
-JPL
Great information, thank you .
You're right..if I said decade...I meant century. Its been around a LONG time. The wiki page for it says 1905.

whats "serviced mean"?
Hi steve. I heard you dont shoot granite anymore
Nice video, thanks!
Steve, do you think shooting shotgun sports help your USPSA/IDPA shooting and vice versa?
can you "OVER" clean the inside barrel?
+Bryan Caballero Yes, I wouldn't put a powertool in a barrel.
What model is John's Beretta? Also what length barrels? Great vid!
Silver Pigeon..
Its actually an onyx. Well atleast Thats what the decription text says! 😊
Brent--sorry but I don't know anything of the Stoeger Condor. I can say that at the registered shoots I have attended as an observer, I've never seen anything but Beretta/Browning/CG/Perazzi/Krieghoff/Blaser being used.
We've actually already covered that. Go check out episodes: 77,78,82,85 and 108.
What do you guys think of the stoeger condor competition?
Brent Reinke
To be blunt : it's crap.
Nothing like a Beretta or a Browning.
Why do some guns have those swirling impact spots? thanks
David Moore ooc
Are you talking about the jeweling? That's just cosmetic. It looks nice.

4 1/2 minutes worth of that guy rambling so we can get to the good stuff. Cut that out of your next video please

Your hands are tingling from the Mineral spirits not the acetone
There is no reasion to stick a drill on a cleaning rod, this video could ruin a lot of guns
There is no way i am watching two 40 min videos on how to clean a shotgun. I can clean my shotgun thoroughly in 15 min.

24:30 - Don't know about availibility in th US, but ballistol has been used in europe since before the 1st WW by the German army.
I would never give a "thumbs down" to a gun video but, this video is mostly just 2 guys shoot'in the shit and hardly any actual cleaning tips ...
