I live in San Diego and I loved Phil's until I lived in the south for work. I found that Phil's is actually just BBQ fast food. I have never returned even though I moved back to San Diego.
I’m from San Diego and Phil’s is definitely overrated. Go to Grand Ole bbq Flinn Springs featured on diners drive and dives.

I'm a San Diego native who has eaten at Phil's before it became popular, and I don't think Phils' is the best BBQ in San Diego. Its good, don't get me wrong, but I don't see why it's the highest rated.
Phil's BBQ is the best- thebeef ribs, jalapeno cheddar sausage, bbq broham, mac salad, fries, onion rings!

San Diego CA Is the south ? And it has a 4.6 on google review which is really good but they made it seem like they had a 4.9 or a 5 which is rare.

Well, some of that looks pretty good but, ???... ...best rated BBQ in the country... ...15,000 5 star reviews... ..they walk in and tables / booths are empty... about 6 people in the entire restaurant..

I have been eatting at Phils for over 20 years. At their old location they were shut down because the made the neighborhood smell like BBQ. Eventually they moved to that location. Its the Best.

@@adiegoguy If you like homemade ice cream, I grew up in South Bay and there is a place called Famous Oasis on the corner of Coronado Ave and Saturn Blvd that still makes everything by hand. It's incredible. FYI it's a cash only joint.

The company I use to work for does Phil’s windows. His barbecue is nothing special. Phil use to call me window guy. He use to say during corporate meetings window guy is laughing. We have amused window guy. He use to crack me up. I know their Chef and use to talk all the time to him at 6AM in the morning. I liked getting free drinks before I left at 11AM. Only his baby back ribs are okay. The beef ribs were too dry.

Phils is pretty good, probably one of the better bbq places in San Diego. Also Jake is wrong that you can't chug an IPA, Im not a smart man and have chugged more ipa's than I should have, last thing, they made the cornbread thinner, so no clue when this was recorded, but they fixed it since then, at least he phils by me fixed it

Way over rated actually one of the lames spots in diego it was just the first big restaurant style joint but never the best bowleggs,coops,Alex's,Bartons, Abbys.. Cali comfort, smokin joints.. just to name a few

My wife is from San Diego and I was stationed there in the Navy. I'm from Houston, Texas but Phils is really amazing and is my favorite BBQ place. Their sauce is something special - sweet, spicy, smoky with the perfect consistency to stick to the meat. Been to Killens in Houston and my opinion is that it is that Killens is VERY overrated.

I dunno if this one is any better, but Phil's in San Diego is basic ass BBQ. Their sauce is good tho. It's a shame the sauce only goes on after cooking or it would be much better.
