    My Speedmaster will be 50 years old this July. It was given to me as a BD gift about 10 days after Apollo 11 landed on the moon. It's one of the first .861 versions made probably in Oct. of 1968. It cost about $275. U.S. at the time (with a Macy's 20% discount because my girlfriend worked there and who gave it to me). I had it "tuned up" back in the late 80s or early 90s by Omega in N.Y.C. for $300. They gave me a newer more scratch resistant Hazilite glass, a newer bracelet and they replaced the sweep second hand because the reflective material was chipping off. But the returned the original crystal and pushers to me in a small plastic bag. So I have an upgraded wristband but they never returned the original to me. This was at a time when it was not yet predicted by many that a pre-lunar Apollo 11 Speedmaster would become such an Icon. I still wear it today and it looks brand new. It's easy for the jeweler to buff out any scratches. I love it.

    I recognize that the sapphire version of this watch is less nerve-wracking than this hesalite version, but honestly that bubble shape is the best thing about this watch imo. It gives it such a warm, unique look that distorts the dial in a way that no new watches do anymore. Plus, any small scratches on the hesalite will just give the watch more charm and vintage appeal. I recognize that many people choose to sacrifice these things for the security of sapphire, but I would go for this one 100%

      It’s like that and that is the reason I never wear my Hesalite glass version Speedy to work. I only wear it when I am off and I know I don’t get close to anything that could scratch the glass.

    • @PatricksTechReviews
      @PatricksTechReviews  6 років тому +1

      The only thing missing in the Hesalite version is the look-through case back. I wish they would have a version like that, though it would be less close to the original one.

      That’s your personal issue with the watch, not mine. I have zero scratches on mine, cause I treat it well and look after it. If you are rough with your watches and don’t give a damn, I recommend getting a Saphire one or better 10x MVMT that you can just dispose of when scratched...

    Great review, Patrick! It's nice to see a fellow watch "appreciator" have a wish come true.

      That's great to hear. I am happy when my reviews allow people to make a decision that allows them to be 100% sure about their purchase or sometimes to find a better option. In the case of buying an Omega, I can always recommend it.

      +Burkinater 48 agree but at the same time it makes it unnecessary more expensive cause I would prefer to have it in a standard omega box for like 200-300€ less. The watch would still be the same.

    I have the sapphire version of this watch. I damaged the sapphire by accident a number of times. I take the watch every 4 to 5 years to the authorized Omega service to have it maintained. Each time I damaged the sapphire I replaced it. The cost was in the range of $380 each time just for the sapphire. It takes about an hour for the watch maker to replace it which is an added cost. My Speedmaster keeps about +-2 to +-4 seconds average per day depending on my type of activity. I wind the watch every day. If not being worn it sits face up on my dresser. The speed is about 3 to 3 seconds per day on the plus side when sitting flat on its back (face up). If resting on its side it will go about 2 seconds slow per day. Overall if based on a month period it can keep more accurate average time than a low priced quartz watch.
    I have 3 Omega watches. They are all chronometer class types. They all average about the same as my Speedmaster for time keeping accuracy. These are excellent watches.

    • @PatricksTechReviews
      @PatricksTechReviews  9 років тому +1

      +randombloke10 Thanks for watching. You should get one if that's your wish. It was mine for very long time and thanks to my better half she said ok and so I got it. It is a beautiful watch, but I don't wear it often enough, just don't want to get it damaged or scratched from the daily wear. Luckily I am fortunate enough to own a selection of nice one and affordable watches to switch between them, so none of my watches is faced with too much risk.

    NASA in the sixties told omega that they didn't want sapphire crystal glass because in space if it shattered there would be tiny glass particles flouting around in zero gravity hessalite will not shatter it will just crack

      Same reason NASA specified a manual winder instead of an automatic. The automatic won't wind in zero gravity.

    • @nonenone3898
      @nonenone3898 7 років тому

      True NASA insisted on manual wind because they then believed an auto would not wind in zero g. In fact auto will and does wind in zero g. NASA were wrong. Many auto watches have been in space in zero g and they work fine.

      Thanks for your comment. Yes, the box is pretty much all about a big show and doesn't help at al to find a place in the apartment for it. The Logo in the centre of the Hesalit is something you can't really see if you don't know it and search for it. It's very small for the human eye, but an amazing little detail Omega added to it.

    Great video review. I've been wearing a Seiko SKX007 (my first "nice" watch) for a couple of months. Although the Speedmaster Pro is far off in terms of price, I'm unwilling to settle and have decided that the Omega will be my 2nd, if not last, watch purchase. • @thathoor

      No, the screws just make it easier to remove links to resize the bracelet. To remove it completely you need to remove the pins attaching it to the case with a tool.

    Great video. I love my speedy. In my opinion, an iconic watch and (like a tuxedo) will never go out of style. Also, one of the best mechanical watches ever made and worth the investment for any watch collector. Note: Impressive new box, however a little over the top. Also, like luxury cars, be prepared to pay a hefty cost (U.S. $710 circa 2016 @ Omega Boutique Stores) to fix or maintain the watch.

    • @PatricksTechReviews
      @PatricksTechReviews  8 років тому

      +Joe V agree, a timeless timepiece (if you can say so), great design them at will look good 50 years down the line too. Service on a luxury watch can be as much as an affordable Tissot or Certina, but if used carefully and not daily I believe the service intervals can be extended a little beyond the recommendation. I would say 7 years should be no issue (I wear mine maybe 2-3x a month, considering I have another 20+ watched to chose from).

      @AkAsCoTTii3 9 років тому +1

      +Mike C I received this exact watch for my 18th birthday not long ago, it came in this box. The reason for this is because the Non Automatic version is the same exact movement as the one that went to the moon, so this is why it is presented this way. The watch in my case and my parents was wrong, so we are changing it for the Automatic version which is considerably more expensive. I shall let you know what type of box and presentation the watch comes in.

      +PatricksTechReviews haha actually I've been using it for quite some time and it's very nice to look at every time. Even better than my Tudor BB. I absolutely loved the collectors box as well.
      I noticed I scratched the bracelet a little, thus I swapped it with the Nato strap myself and find it looks awesome, much casual look for as a daily wear, the bracelet is nice but stand out too much. I'll swap it back for bigger events!

    Great review! Quick question regarding the 300m Diver vs Speedmaster. Deciding which of the two to get now. Always been a big fan of the diver but ended up settling with the C60 Trident (Christopher Ward), which means the Speedmaster would 'complete' my collection more than the diver, but the diver would get more wear every day and I've always just been leaning more towards it. The diver is sentimental and practical but the speedmaster is an iconic piece to the collection. Wondering your thoughts between the two.

    • @PatricksTechReviews
      @PatricksTechReviews  9 років тому +1

      I would say if you have another watch (watches) that are your daily wearer go for the Speedmaster. If you want a new daily wearer I would opt for the Seamaster instead as it has a saphire cristal which is better for daily use. It took me as well 3 years between the first 300M and the Speedmaster. No clue when I will be able to afford another expensive piece, but I'm happy with my collection (for now). ;-)

    Pat good job! I also just got this watch in early 2016 in the same box however, I think this box is so useless as it's too big. The old red box is much more useful in that you can keep the watch in it and put the box in a drawer where this big thing is like a small suitcase with now practical use. Just a question, around 13:39, I noticed that the minute chronograph jumped to 2nd minute when the seconds hand haven't reached 60 seconds yet. I noticed the same when I watched the Moonwatch video from Omega website. At the start of the video below, the minute hand jumped before the seconds hand reached 60. Is this normal for Speedmasters?

    If I had a choice I would trade all that crap for a nice leather strap. NATO straps are a dime a dozen so the owner should be able to choose and purchase one for himself if that is his wish. Nice strap removal tool and kind of them to include some extra spring bars.

    Hallo!
    Sehr schöne Vorstellung, vielen Dank dafür.
    Wird definitiv meine nächste Errungenschaft. Sehe es ebenso, dass die Konfiguration
    mit Stahlboden und Hesalitglas die klassische Wahl ist.
    Kannst Du, nach längerem Tragen, was zur Ganggenauigkeit des Kalibers sagen? Wie oft ziehst Du

      +monsieur otternase die Version, wie im Video gezeigt ist der Klassiker schlecht hin! Ich ziehe sie ca. 13x Umdrehungen auf, aber zwecks Ganggenauigkeit kann ich leider nichts sagen, denn sie rotiert mit ca. 28x andere Uhren M Handgelenk... ;-)
      Pro: das Glas und wie das ZB aussieht je nach Blickwinkel
      Contra: man muss höllisch aufpassen wegen Kratzern!

    +PatricksTechReviews , congrats on that nice watch! Glad it's a standard kit now. I'm assuming you know the actual name of the 'watchmaker's magnifier', but it'll be good to educate new watchlovers that that's called the 'loupe'. Watchmaker's loupe/Jeweller's loupe (usually jeweller's has an even higher magnification).
    and sadly, as many people want it to be close to the moonwatch, it's never gonna be the pre-moon and moon-landed caliber 321 movement, with the column wheel chronograph, that went up to the moon. the cam lever is just nowhere near as attractive as the column wheel when you see it. so yea, in a way, solid caseback or display caseback isn't that much of a difference.
    Cheers and wear in good health! :)

      Thanks for your comment, sorry to come back to you so late. I am preparing more for any new videos and will make sure to use the lingo accordingly. ;-)
      And yes, it will never be "THE" original moonwatch due to the different moevement, but it's the closest you can get when buying a new one!
      Happy New Year!
