- Today’s track is like rollin’ thunder. And it comes at you just like a hurricane. It’s a powerful, heavy hitting anthem, and designed to blow you away. Hells Bells by AC/DC But in spite of that, it was actually written as a tribute to a fallen frontman, Bon Scott. Brian Johnson came into the band with some big shoes to feel as Angus Young and his brother Malcom young along with uber producer Mutt Lange created the biggest selling rock record ever… Back In Black . Charged with writing the lyrics to this rock epitaph on the tight deadline of just one day, Brian Johnson found himself paralyzed with writer’s block. But after some unexpected inspiration and spooky, supernatural experience, his fortunes began to improve. He felt like he received some help from the grave, then later the band had a 1 ton bell commissioned to get the right sound for the song...the story is coming up next on Professor Of Rock.

So I’m excited today to get into the story behind the opening track of one of the biggest selling albums in history. AC/DC’s ‘take no prisoners, spare no lives’ tribute to the late great Bon Scott, Hell’s Bells. Just weeks into the recording of AC/DC’s landmark album, Back in Black, newly hired lead singer Brian Johnson was suffering from writer’s block.
It was the spring of 1980 and the band had gathered at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas… The Young brothers, Malcolm and Angus, were furiously churning out new material for the record at breakneck speeds. Just as Brian finished the lyrics to one song, the brothers were right there with another riff ready to go.
Finally, one morning Johnson hit the wall. Or as he described it, he was “dead in the head.” In his newly released memoirs, Johnson recounted what happened next. I’ll just paraphrase what he said…
Outside there were black clouds were forming and the horizon. And soon a storm was raging over the ocean. About this time there was a knock on the door of Johnson’s guesthouse. When he opened it, he saw legendary producer Mutt Lange, a certifiable musical genius. Lange had produced AC/DC’s previous album Highway to Hell and was on the island with them to helm the sequel.
The second Brian opened the door, Mutt saw the look on his face. “What’s the matter Brian?” “I’m struggling here, Mutt… I’ve just got a bit of writer’s block, that’s all.” As Mutt stood there in the open doorway, he thought for a moment and asked “Are you stuck on anything in particular?” Brian said he was working on a new riff from Malcom called Hell’s Bells. Just then, somewhere in the distance, there was a loud, earth-shaking roar. “That’s rolling thunder,” said Lange. It was an expression Brian hadn’t heard before, but instantly something clicked. And Mutt could see it in Brian’s eyes. “There you go,” he said, “your first line.”
After that, it started dumping rain. “Pouring rain,” Brian said.
“And listen to that wind,” said Mutt.“It’s coming on like a hurricane!” said Brian Boom that was it! AC/DC’s newly anointed lyricist was off and running.

My husband died 5 years ago was only 50. He was an old rock lover lynard skynard and many others Nazareth RUSH acdc of course iron maiden. He wore headphones on always and I'd say why do u always have those o.he said its like having a sound track to your life, right he was, so many songs I still can't listen too without bursting into tears..music has the power of bring the past into your head full colors full emotions everything... I am so grateful to be able to time travel back to hhim like that . RIP to your dad and RIP to my Len. Old rockers never die they just rock on in eternity. We will see them again. Bless you thanks for sharing.
Back in Black is still a must have and must play. Simply one of the best albums ever recorded. So good, sound engineers use it to tune their equipment. It's a masterpiece.

@@brianstrutter1501 Horrible take, Bon Scott was an absolute lyrical and musical genius and without him the band wouldnt have gotten as big either. Those 2 albums are just as influential and well made alongside Highway To Hell
The Back In Black album was such an incredible accomplishment given the tragic circumstances. The greatest tribute album to a fallen band-mate's unexpected death. This album really solidified AC/DC as legends of hard rock. My favorite song from the album is "You Shook Me All Night Long" which has already been covered on this channel.
That's right. Great song.
It remains a classic to this day. Every song is iconic.

My only gripe with that particular song is that Led Zeppelin did it 11 years prior, and AC/DC's version is the one most people think of instead

These guys are great and LOUD! I saw AC/DC perform in the 1980's. That was the last time I went to a concert WITHOUT ear plugs. My ears rang terribly for four days afterward and whenever somebody talked to me, my response was, "What did you say?" I was left with permanent hearing impairment, but still love their music.

LOL, I saw them twice and luckily that didn't happen to me. The band that did leave my ears ringing for days was The Who, probably contributed to my current tinnitus.
Same! I saw them in 1983 on the Flick of the Switch tour. My hearing was impacted for about a week. Thankfully it returned to nromal.
While AC/DC was loud, Black Sabbath is my hearing loss concert.

I remember it like it was yesterday: A few of us teens were walking home one hot Summer night. Steve put in his newly purchased Back in Black tape in his big boom-box and hit play. We were mesmerized. We took the looong way home that night.

This album is a coming of age album for me. I was 15 at the time and it just blew me away.
When I first heard Back in Black it changed my life. There was a whole new kind of music being born.
The first time I hear Back In Black I was speechless. Truly blown away and knowing AC⚡️DC was back and rocking. Great Album and a great comeback from despair.

So glad I got to see ACDC live in 1981 during the early days of the Brian Johnson era. They were, as the name implies, electric in concert.
They lit up the stage.
A few years after this album was released I was hanging out with some friends listening to tapes. Someone popped in Back in Black and encouraged by alcohol we all started singing along. We didn't stop after the first song, or the second, or the third, but actually sang all nine songs. My friends were actually cool is what I thought. ACDC to my knowledge never released a sub-par song therefore will remain in the number one spot of my favorite bands always.

The second you hear that bell strike and that clean clear opening riff you knew this was going to be their opener for future concerts. Great story behind the song and the inspiration behind the lyrics. I love Bon but they couldn't have picked a better lead singer after his death than Brian.

What a great start to your childhood.
Boston was my first concert, then AC-DC was the follow up. Was in awe at the little dude in school clothes high kicking back and forth across the stage nonstop for what seemed the entire show when I 'try' to remember. I was a sophomore in high school so it was late 76 or early 77. When Back in Black came out I played my guitar to the album for literally months day and night until I could hit every note on every song and I only play by ear, self taught. I had this album on 8 track,Vinyl, cassette and finally CD. Amazing album!
I’ll never forget the first time I heard “Hells Bells” 🔔 I was at 6th grade camp and some kid had the album and played it. I was a little spooked honestly and in aww at the same time. I couldn’t believe it cause I felt like I never heard anything like it!
I can see how haunting that song must have been to newbies.
Hells Bells is one of my few immediate crank-up songs.
Back in Black is an album that's very special to me. It was the first tape I ever owned. My really cool metalhead aunt bought it for me when I was 11. It was a flea market knock off though so side a was on side b and vice versa. A couple years later she took me to see them on the Razors Edge tour. She saw them in high school with Bonn Scott and went to see them every time they came around. It was awesome and I still have one of the AC/DC dollars that they dropped on the crowd during Money Talks

I remember playing this album on cassette on my Jensen stereo in my 74 Bronco driving home from school. I felt so cool blasting it at top volume. Those were such amazing times.
I had a Jensen super tuner in my car I think it was 40 Watts total. Sounded awesome with a REO song riding in the storm out live. Cranked up to full blast naturally.
The whole album is a masterpiece. It's one of the very few Rock albums you can just put on and push play. No need to skip anything. "Have a Drink on Me" is still one of my favorite AC/DC songs. I personally have bought the album at least 3 times. It's a standard. At times in my life when I've been without it, buying it was a no brainer. There's a reason it's the greatest selling Rock album of all time.

Was a huge fan of Bon Scott and didnt think they could replace him at all. I was right they didnt replace him they exchanged him for Brian and kept the ROCK a ROLLING !

I love AC/DC to this day still my favorite band and this was my favorite album. Seeing them in concert is awesome with Angus in his shorts down on the ground going in circles playing his guitar nothing like it!! Love them always and will forever turn up the radio when I hear one of their songs come on❤
I was fortunate enough to see AC/DC at the Riverside Theater in September 1978 . The seating capacity for the Theater was 2450, and it wasn't even a sold-out show. Unbelievable concert.
I had no great expectations for Back In Black, but when the needle hit the vinyl, I knew this was the new Era for AC/DC. Fantastic album!!
Bon and Brian both brought unique vocal styles to metal.

Hell, i remember exactly where i was when i found out Bon died...I was 18 and it really shook me. I had only seen them gig ten weeks earlier at the Birmingham Odeon. What a gig that was.

I felt the same way when Brian May said that Queen didn't rehearse Bohemian Rhapsody.... They just showed up and figured it out.
Brian's friend knows nothing if he thinks this was "too high". As a die hard Bon Scott fan even I think it was just perfection. It wasn't Bon ... but it was GOOD. I like both singers.

Didn't get to buy the cassette (was 11 when it came out) until a few after the release. Hells Bells like the rest of the album absolutely killed it! Bet I went through 3 cassettes of BIB from playing it so much.

The greatest comeback album of all time.
My very first cassette that I purchased was "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC. My 2nd cassette was April Wine's "Stand Back". My 3rd purchase was AC/DC "Back In Black". To this day, Back in Black is my favorite AC/DC album of all time. I hope I will get to see AC/DC live before they call it a career. Sadly, I have never had a chance to see them before.

I remember getting it brand new on cassette when it came out. I wore out four copies of that cassette. It was my ONLY album I would go to for about a year.....and when my Dad died unexpectedly in 1982, it somehow provided comfort and escape for me. Still one of the greatest albums of all time. It PERMANENTLY shaped me as a musician.
If you ever get the opportunity to see them in concert you must. There are few feelings more emotional than the start of Hells Bells with Brian Johnson hitting the giant bell with the sledge hammer. Then the guitar riff comes in. As the music is playing and Brian is working swinging that hammer. The sound of that bell and guitar live will move you. If it doesn't you have no soul.
Still to me. The biggest hit Mutt Lang ever had was Shania Twain married her had kids . Then left her for her best friend. Without missing a beat!

AC/DC used to be my favorite band...... still love them. I remember hearing the storm coming in that inspired Hells Bells. Both Bon and Brian were great for the band. Both great showmen too.

Lang has produced some of my all-time favorite albums. A group of phenomenal musicians can be polished even further by a legendary producer. Back in Black was the first AC/DC album I had and I backtracked from there. I can't rank a best era for the band because they were all fantastic.

I had just bought the album when it came out and got my license to drive the following summer and blasted the whole album everyday while cruising town. It was a big deal as it is now. My mom would throw away my Devils music, id have to go buy another 8 track and hide it in my car lol. What a great time to be 16.

They loosened plaster from the ceiling in the Sam Houston Collusium in Houston .this was in the 80s.
Collusium was condemned shortly.

I was in my sophomore year of college, working at the college radio station. I remember that I was reluctant to accept Brian Johnson as the new lead for AC/DC, because I was such a huge fan of Bon Scott. After listening to the album I was sold, and still a fan of AC/DC. However, still love the Bon Scott era the best.
AC/DC has had number one albums on billboard. For those about to rock went to number one as well as black ice. AC/DC is in the top selling of all time because of sustained sales, which means you don’t necessarily need to be number one to be top selling

This album all throughout is killer with no filler. AC/DC really came into their own in 1977 with Let There Be Rock and just kept going along releasing more great albums! Back In Black I've already played a ton of times since I got it on vinyl, and Nothing's gonna slow me down! I think that their best albums in order are: Powerage, Let There Be Rock, Highway To Hell, Back In Black, and Flick of The Switch. Also you definitely earned a new sub, I look forward to more videos

I managed to see AC/DC in 1978 with Bon Scott at the helm.it was the highway to hell European tour at the Glasgow apollo, it was my 1st big gig,it was friggin fantastic.
And Brian Cameron and did a great job in his own right.

We played the entire album almost constantly the first year it came out. It lived in the cassette deck in the car. Lived on the turntable at home. That summer everywhere you went you'd hear AC/DC playing. All these years later I still play it quite frequently. Thankfully CD's eventually came out so we stopped wearing out tapes or vinyl. I think a lot of sales are due to repeat customers buying replacements as tapes failed or wore out over the years.

Fresh off the album release of Back and Black, I was lucky to see them in concert. Angus mooned the audience and was banned from playing there in the future.
I had heard "You Shook Me All Night Long" years ago as a kid back in the 80s, but it wasn't until 2001 when I was thrusted into AC/DC fandom. I was in the navy and on my first 6 month deployment. Our second stop was Fremantle, Australia. When I was able to leave the ship, I went straight to a local record shop. They were playing "You Shook Me All Night Long" on the radio in the shop, so I asked the clerk if I could listen to the CD. They had listening stations set up by the counter. I was hooked from the beginning with that church bell. I listened to about a minute of each song and it was an immediate buy! While speaking to the clerk, he looked as if he had just created a monster...which he had LOL. I ended up buying Back In Black and Highway To Hell. As a "Welcome To Australia" gift, he threw in For Those About To Rock, TNT, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and The Razor's Edge for free. Needless to say, it was an experience I will never forget.
This was the first Album I ever heard from ACDC and I thought this band takes it right to the edge and hangs it there, best band ever.
My friend and I went to the Fort Wayne coliseum to see AC/DC on their Back in Black tour. Back in those days smoking was allowed inside and we were in the nose bleed section of the coliseum. Within 20 feet of us there was at least 40 people smoking, but only 3 of them had cigarettes. We left the concert with the best contact buzz you could ask for. We walked around the coliseum 3 times before we found the car. It was the first concert I ever went to. It was a great time!

I remember the first time I heard back in black as a kid. It blew me away. It really help put me on the path of loving hard rock and metal.
The local radio station played Highway to Hell every afternoon around 3:00 pm, just as we would get home from high school. Fond memories of toking it up, listening to AC/DC in the 70’s. One of my absolute favorite quotes from a movie review was from our local paper after seeing the AC/DC concert movie. He said “Bon Scott’s singing sounds like a monkey shrieking while dancing on razor blades.” 😂😂😂. I KNOW Bon Scott took it as a compliment. Brian Johnson had some big damn shoes to fill for sure.
I remember The first time I heard this on 8track. My sister had it in my dads Pontiac Bonneville. We drove all the way to North Carolina to pick her up from her moms house. On the way back my dad threw the copy he had just bought her out the window screaming at her saying that was junk. She started crying and he promised her he would buy her another copy as soon as we got back to Austin. We listened to that 8track that whole summer nonstop at Travis Lake. I had such good memory's of my sister and all the good music she turned me onto. I love you and Miss you Brenda!

I was in college when Back in Black came out. We would put our speakers in the window of our dorm room and blast Hells Bells to the world at full volume. Nobody ever complained. It's always been my favorite song on the album.

Brian Johnson's 1980 is probably the most interesting year for any musician. Starts the year in a 9-5 job struggling to pay the bills, by the end of the year he's completed and touring for one of the best selling albums of all time.
That brought me back to when I bought Back in Black, was in love with Highway to Hell, so had to get the new album. Putting the needle on the album and hearing that bell and the the riff and the rest, I got a chill just thinking about it, and another when you were playing it. THANKS for bringing such a great memory, and thanks to AC/DC for so many great songs..
The album that changed my life. Maybe the perfect hard rock record. But having read the Bon Scott bio Highway to Hell, I'm convinced that many of the lyrics on BIB were written by Bon. Johnson & the Youngs likely made some changes, but those lyrics were completed right before Bon passed. Then they disappeared, after the band's management visited his flat. Bon's family was paid handsomely from BIB, and I'm sure that's why they Youngs made that gesture.
This was the first album I ever bought. It's so good!

I remember, rolling down the windows in my '75 Cougar, red w/ white half top, Air shocks jacking up the rear with mags on it.
I would turn up the volume on my Pioneer stereo with a Pyramid EQ running through 6 Jenson Tri-axels in my back window (2 mounted and the other 4 propped up facing the front)
I would have the tape ready to go and as I slowly entered the parking lot in front of our local movie theater (which was our hangout spot) I popped in the tape and the Bell intro leading into the guitar riff was my virtual page announcing that I had arrived and the party can begin..
I felt like I was such a bad ass and had my own theme song.
If anyone else tried to show off with that song they got ridiculed for copying me. Everyone had to find what was their own signature song to cruise with or at least beginning the cruise and when you pass in front of others that weren't from your neighborhood kinda like a challenge to them.
The music back then was not just part of your life but a part of your psyche, there was something for every memory you created.
Back then when you were able to finally buy that one album, you took it home and listened to it from side one to the end of side two straight through and then played your favorites from that group over and over for a couple weeks then you got back to mixing your songs from the other albums back into your daily play list.
Buying an album and listening to music was an actual event back then. You invited friends over to hear it, you saved money up and had to pick the one choice that was sometimes where you could only buy 4 or 5 a year and just had to listen to others on the radio, over at your buddies house or, if you were really lucky, a good friend or girlfriend would record you a tape of it.
This entire album was just classic. Again, this song was great and vibrated anyone sitting in the orange Pinto wagon with the power booster and six speakers. Love that the guy from the foundry got to strike that bell.

I was 9 or 10 riding in my uncle's tiny car with his 3 daughters and my little sister. He had the speakers up to heaven and the little blue car was shaking from the farm into town where we were going singing ALL the songs from the Dirty Deeds album word for word is one of my favorite 70's memories. I didn't get a chance to see them live until May 2001. Such a great band!
July 1980, sat in the doorway of the woodwork room of the estate school with the rest of the Glory Farm gang, when across the field we literally heard a rolling thunder as our mate James approached with his 85/85 stereo radio cassette player slung under his arm and this song blasting full bore, it was our first tentative moments of hearing Hells Bells and then the Back in Black album in its entirety for the very first time. That long hot summers afternoon is etched in my memory. The very next day we were all down to the local record shop to get out own copies.
Brian Johnson wasn't totally unknown before AC/DC. He was in Geordie, Goodbye Love is a 70's classic.
A few years back when I was trying on my Dr. DOOM costume and the door started knocking. I was listening to my ACDC greatest hits I opened the door as the bells 🔔 began and the 2 young Mormon Missionaries stared at me. They ran off I said close the gate behind you in my most terrifying voice 💀. After the the gate slammed. I exclaimed Hahaha Hahaha! The neighbors from San Dominican 🇩🇴 😆Republic said "Dios Mijo!" Hours later they were saging near my front door! 🚪 I'm going to ask her what she thought about that! 😏
It’s the biggest hard rock album ever made, for sure, but I can’t bring myself to say it’s their best. For me, the Bon Scott era is where it’s at. High Voltage. Dirty Deeds. Powerage. If You Want Blood. Those can’t be topped.
Props to the boys for carrying on, though. How many bands can survive such a tragedy?

Back in black is the album that took AC/DC to become the leader of hard rock in the 80s and with mutt Lange returning as producer and the young brothers becoming the premier guitar team with a killer rhythm section with cliff Williams and Phil Rudd this was a band primed to rock stadiums

@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 also check out Angus and Malcolm's older brother George's work he and his musical partner Harry Vanda were members of 60s Australian legends the easy beats which spawned the smash hit Friday on my mind and after that band folded Harry and George emerged in the late 70s as flash and the pan kind of a strange studio band who were almost like a quirkier steely Dan their big hits were hey st.peter and waiting on a train well worth exploring and also George and Harry became an massive production team in their native Australia producing the early bon Scott AC/DC and pub rock veterans the Angels or in north America known as Angel city

I remember it like yesterday. As a kid I was playing basketball with a few friends at the neighborhood park. Instead of a fence the town had mounded hills around the court to keep the ball from bouncing away and to separate it from the baseball field. We were just shooting around when we heard that bell. But there was no church nearby and and it was getting closer and closer. Just as the guitar riff was getting started a guy came over the hill with a massive boom box on his shoulder. I don’t remember much more from that day. What I do know is that my taste in music changed from that point forward.
I've never had any interest in ACDC... until a few months ago when, for whatever reason, my brain acknowledged Thunderstruck... I have no idea why, but while it was playing on my coworker's crap boombox, an Emerson from the 80's so it's about as crap as you can get and with a perpetually half-dead 'left' channel, I heard Thunderstruck on the classic rock station than plays the same songs all day, every day..., but I noticed that it's amazing. No, like AMAZING. To the point where I've put it on a practice playlist that I play along to frequently because the structure and sound in general are just perfect and it FEELS SO GOOOOOOOOD. Now I hear your audio through my home stereo and I'm like 'well, shite then, I finally understand what it's like to actually HEAR ACDC'. I watch your videos because they're so well done that I always learn something and usually am enlightened or even swayed by your passion for insight, accuracy and insight.

I first got into AC/DC when I was 10 or 11, right around 1990. My dad was a garbage man and regularly brought home things people threw away that were still fine. He picked up in a lot of rich neighborhoods. One day he brought home High Voltage on cassette and was playing it loudly on his little tape player while he was cutting the grass. I walked around to the back yard and heard "Can I Sit Next To You Girl" and was hooked.
Fast forward a few years, I was in middle school, and a friend of mine got me Back In Black on cassette for Christmas. My dad had been hanging out at a bar down the road from our house and heard "Rock n Roll Ain't Noise Pollution" on the jukebox and said "That has to be AC/DC. Sounds just like them." But he had no idea where it came from. When my buddy handed me the cassette and I looked over the track list, there it was. I listened to that cassette a million times with my dad. The cool thing about that cassette is, it was printed wrong. The track names for side 1 is printed on side 2, and vice versa.
Over the years I've gotten up to 5 copies of that album. Still one of my favorites, of course, cause AC/DC is my favorite band ever. This was a cool episode, thanks for this.
