So excited about my review!!! I couldn't sleep just going through the vault in my head and what I was going to do.... got down the track last night, pushed the covers off the bed and then it chucked it down! Typical British weather. Doh! Thanks for the review Shawn and keep up the good work dude.
I'm not fit to shine Sam's shoes and hopefully I don't cop much flak for my comments, but I note during his approach that because his left hand is over the top of the pole and not cocked underneath, to push his right arm upwards he actually has to rotate his torso clockwise and lean back slightly (the clip jumps around a bit but you can catch a freeze frame of him at penultimate footstrike leaning back, and there's another point - where he's mid-air between the judges - that he's twisted enough that I can see almost his entire back, despite the vision being taken from the side). This would all cause him to slow a tiny bit. The drop in speed and change in upper body positioning may also lower his hips - which is a trade-off that he could be deriving benefit from: once the pole is clear of his shoulders he squares up again and the hips are already transitting upwards as he takes off, much like a long jumper aims to do. I doubt it makes terribly much difference to an elite jumper like him, but those emulating his pole drop technique without his ability might find themselves well under and leaning back at takeoff, or even have their final steps veer off towards the side of the runway (both symptoms I've seen, then disappear as soon as the pole vault drop technique espoused elsewhere on youtube by Coach David Butler, for example, was deployed). That being said: it's working for him, keep doing it! :D Different models apply to these top vaulters. Lavillenie performs Butler's "Dysfunctional Plant #7" and were he a junior vaulter, it would likely get coached out of him......and he goes alright! ;)
I agree alphapelt, it's pretty hard trying to critique the best vaulter in the world at the moment . . . but that's just vaulting, nothing personal, just another point of view. His plant is definately not a text-book version by any means, you have to wonder if he got his "on the ground" phase better if it would improve what already is super impressive. I have no idea how much higher he can go, but boy, if he got off the ground a little better, he'd swing into inversion faster and cover the pole so much better you'd have to be looking at World Record heights, his hip clearance is frickin' huge ! I love watching him jump, very exciting to see any vaulter improve, especially Sam, and especially at his heights.
Hey @samKendricks why do you throw your head back so far in mid vault. I've been wondering this for a while now. Is there a purpose to it or is it just one of those things like the Huffman roll when it's not really intentional it just kinda happens? Shawn you got input on this?
Marshall Jeppeson He said in the athletic experience podcast that he originally did it as an impulse to get his hips high because it helped him drop his shoulders. Today he does it because he's actually checking the bar's location to get his spacing right.
Hey Shawn, could you say more about what poles Sam is using (flex number, length, weight rating, etc.) and where he is gripping and such? And mondo too if you know.. I'm always intrigued by the numbers behind these guys' vaults.
I need help! I have to constantly be encouraged to get better but all I hear from my coach is how I'm not doing this or that right. I'm at such a block right now I can't even plant/ jump. For one, how do I get over this discouragement? Second, how can I start jumping and improving again?
Hey Shaun! So this kinda goes with the eating stuff. I'm going to be a senior in high school and I'm looking to vault in college but I have stuff to get past. I don't enjoy eating, I feel mentally bad after eating and usually eat very little, sometimes not at all. When I do eat, I usually don't eat healthy and it is usually crappy food. I know I do It and really want to change it, but I either can't bring myself to do it or don't know how. Healthy food just usually grosses me out. The texture and taste of stuff like vegetables is just awful to me, and it really embarasses me to admit it. As an athelete, you know this is a problem. Going into senior year at 5'10 139 pounds, I have no weight and don't have the speed to make up for it. What Should I do?
+Fat guy hey man! Nothing to be embarrassed about! So your gut is full of microbiology. It's a living organizm and it craves what it's fed which makes sense why healthy food feels' gross. The cool thing is you can change your microbiome just by eating eifferent. It takes a few weeks but soon you'll start to crave healthy food vs crap since that's what it's made out of. You truly are what you eat! Crappy food makes you feel crappy which is probably why you associate eating with feeling crappy. Step 2 would be to eat 4-6 smaller meals throughout the day vs one or 2 big ones. We can chat more if you need help. Shoot me an email! Honestly, the jump was pretty spectacular. I think adding speed and bigger sticks changes the puzzle and you can get back to working on new things! What he did, on that pole takes some technique that only a handful of people have ever had, so its hard to say what was an error and what wasn't.
I can see a fair few "errors", but . . . . you can't argue with a 6m jumper, and if I've learnt one thing, it's that there's definately more than one way to vault, (that's for sure). If you want the BEST review type of clip, then check out Brian Clymer with his Bubka clips on youtube. He is amazingly good.
I was there when Sam jumped 6m. I was hanging out with Stacy Dragila by the coach's box and I saw Sam's Dad's reaction and it was priceless.

I agree! That's the tough part of breaking down an elite vaulters jump is one person's technique is another persons dysfunction. I'm with you!

I think he does that to help guide his body to lean farther back into a full inversion.
