Great job demonstrating all different structures formed by the surf including some of the caveats of beach safety Jerry. You helped this old boy brush up on his surf structure ID. Thanks again!
Awesome diagrams and illustrations to make easy understanding beach structure... That's make your video standing out.. The tough part is to get there early before anyone else pick this best spot... Thank U
Thanks Jerry, this is an amazing video. A great tutorial on reading the surf. As a fellow fly fisherman, I appreciate the added knowledge. It reduces allot of blind casting
Your videos are always awesome! Very informative. I've learned a ton watching them. Just started surf fishing over the summer a couple times then really caught the bug in the fall. Til this weekend the only thing I had actually caught was the bug but finally caught my first striper (lil schoolie but it's a start) at Jones on Sunday morning! Thanks Jerry! YDM!

Excellent Video Jerry! Sometimes current in these structures are tremendous! I found these structure often forms after a severe storm by like you said in the video the beach is a very dynamic place sometimes these structures disappears after a storm. Again Great Video Jerry!

Hey Jerry, awesome video! I was trying to imagine how I might fish this on the fly as you are. For example, Are you casting into the rip and feeding line out with a mend and then retrieving? Are you jigging a heavy clouser as the rip takes your line? Can you share how you would present your fly? Thanks so much!
Yes and yes! But all kinds of other things to see how fish are laid out. I would start on the side where current feeds perhaps a a zero current zone cast above and let the flie swing in and work it in there as long as I can. Thats where I think the fish will be not so much in the current. I would also work the same other side and outside portions if I can get to them. Beach lip close to the rip also a great place. I would start with a deciver style fly perhaps then epoxy minnow then go to weighted flies like the clouser or half half until I find something that works somewhere. Always doing a nice swim in at the end of working the fly in a zone. Basically fan casting starting from what I think is prime water first covering the whole area, great question Frank thanks for watching commenting and subscribing!
@@FishYourWay Jerry, thanks so much for your reply and advice. I watch a lot of your videos and pay special attention to how you work the fly. It seems like you are not casting like crazy but really let the fly hang in the current. It seems you’re also working it forwards and backwards, taking line in and letting it out too. Am I observing correctly. Please correct me if I’m wrong. It seems really efficient! I must admit that It’s hard to resist just ripping the fly back in and When I do have the patience to let it dangle out there, I often wonder if my fly just looks like another Coney Island candy wrapper drifting by!!
@@frankmischler5186 Much welcome Frank and thanks for watching and the kind words. As per working a fly... I toss the book out the window. Plain line hand on rod strips will not give me the action I like most the time. Its clumsy sometimes and I been told I am very unorthodox (i dont like fishing rules anyhow) but by holding the line away from the rod I can do a lot more with it. In conjunction with working the rod tip the action is limitless. You can hold and work a fly in the zone much much longer. Sometimes its a matter of keying the right retrieve. I figure the longer my fly is in the water the longer I am fishing. Casting especially a lot of false casts your fly is in the air more then your actually fishing. So, although your fishing out further your also fishing less. Of course if the fish are ranging thats where you wanna be regardless. Alot of my videos show what I am doing with my hands and have some explanation I am pretty sure you keyed in by reading your comment. Best advice I have and heard is just slow everything down, everything!
I love your videos, hit the front, hit the sides, and hit the back, I wish my female friend was here lol. Do you fish jigs and buck tails in this scenario?
Thanks Big Al, the last video I did I have a shot of a similar rip funny you mention! Jigs/bucktails would be great. I generally fish a teaser and found with a bucktail you are best presenting without one so i dont fish them often.
Excellent demonstrating Jerry! Thank you so much for putting your time and effort to make this video. I learned a lot and definitely going to try this out in the coming season. One question tho. This method only apply when it is low tide right? How do you find the same rip when its high tide? Also one very important thing I want to add to this video is be aware of incoming tide when you are standing on the sand bar like the one in your video. Because the trough that you walk though to get to the sand bar will get too deep for you to walk back and you’ll get trapped! (Personal experienced) Again thanks for the video. Tight line!

Hello, first thanks for sharing. It helped a lot. I begin this year to surfcasting and i am very focus in reading beach structure. Can you advise any book ou source of information to go deeply in this subject? Thanks in advance. Paul
Much welcome and thanks! I cant think of many books on the topic I have a few books but they seem to brush on the beach and other areas with no live examples as a video would. check out other videos I am sure there are a few. This I did off the top of my head that day as it was a prime example "text book" oddly. Will do more in the future when I see other such example.
Thanks Gillum! appreciate watching and taking the time to comment and good question, that is a cabelas fish eagle II blank 9/10 weight, the CT shoreline never fished it but I would guess is more like LI north shore? Hi David thanks for watching and Great question! I will 100% It can be more effective sometimes as well because youll be able to let it sit in one of those areas of zero turbulence for a good will tempting the most wary of fish yes 100% The down side is sometimes as you can see it was the only one one the beach for miles and you have to travel but well worth the time to hit them up with bait if you found one! Interesting thanks for sharing I like calling it that but nice to know, I have heard that plenty before, much appreciate the kind words to, all the best and tightlines!
Hi i am Faisal and I live in Kingdom of Saudi arabia. Here the common species are Spanish mackeral, Queen fish, Travellary, albacore, snappers and groupers. We don't have surf here good back bays and jetties are usually we fish upon. I have been reading book inshore fly fishing by lou tabory and getting hooked. I wonder if you could please guide as to good rod and reel with flies and other gear I could buy and good places to buy the from Thanks further any more good reads..
Good question. i did a general video on the matter but there are so many item specifics ua-cam.com/video/UI7KKgxaICU/v-deo.html but a great video to watch first. I like 9wt rods in general for the application. Lou's book is fantastic and very insightful I read a few of his. I use cortland reels ltd models but the medalists are great reels and i would highly recomend them about a size 1495-1/2 I find the 1498 too heavy. There are lots of entry level 9wt rods and they are actually well made graphite even the low end ones like the rediton crosswater, the croswater reels are also very well made. As for flies I found all I need is a pocket of clouser and decievers in diffrent colors and sizes pending what/where I am fishing. Sizes 1-2/0 but will do a wider #2-4/0 aizes and some popping flies to cover the top like the bangers or snake flies. I tie my own flies but gear i use I get on ebay I like the older stuff. Line i think is the most important link I use many but found the cortland 444 to be well made and the 333 is also all well at the lower end.
@@FishYourWay great great help for a new comer to join this elite club.. Thanks man let me watch the video... Yes really the book is master piece... Enjoying every bit of it..
@@FishYourWay kindly guide me to good angling outlet to find the fly fishing gear at one place. Previously I used tackle direct and it seems they don't stock much of fly fishing gear. Further, cortland 444 sinktip fly line. Does freshwater fly line we have to buy for salt water applications as it is perhaps only one they have. Thanks
I willl use the same line for fresh and salt if I am using the same wt no problem with that. Temperature will effect its handling thats about it so if its the same climate your good to go. You can check amazon they have a lot of products. I tend to use ebay more especially for the tying supplies. But amazon should have about everything you may need.
@@FishYourWay thanks man...just reading how effective popping with flies could be with floating sinktip line... Its more like sinking little neck popper...
The content of the video is fantastic. This is a great description of how to find rips. I learned some new clues to look for on the beach itself and where the fish might hold. I hate to be the Grammar Police, but 'trough' should be pronounced like 'cough,' not like 'plough' rhyming with cow. I thought it might be regional dialect thing, but I can't find a reference to it. I found myself fixating on that, rather than the quality of the information you're providing.
Thanks @xxchett22XX loved your comment! Sometimes the beach can be loaded with them others may only be one in miles and often there is a offshore one beyond the one your fishing! You stand correct on the grammar, its a habit I have that I kept in some pronunciations which I still do with some words and brands. There may be a few other folks who say it the same way I do but you stand correct the correct way would be like cough. In the end its a tomato and the content is the lesson. Thanks for pointing that out! Fish Your Way, Jerry
xxchet22xx ? I too think of things like that sometimes, but as long as I understand what someone is saying, that's all that matters, regardless of spelling, grammar, or pronunciation. We come to Jerry for good info, good videos, and his always pleasant demeanor. e.e. cummings spells with small letters...and he's famous...
Indeed, it is a great way to go about it when you are tired with the same old song and dance. ua-cam.com/video/_9ZN0SHOIr4/v-deo.html a little more skill involved but very rewarding when you connect, thanks much for watching and commenting, Fish Your way, Jerry

Hi Kong! I stopped by the piers yesterday was hoping to run into you! That sounds like a great idea and a rip as such would put them in close range would love to see that and be keeping an eye out! Hope to catch you soon! Fish Your Way! Jerry

Got it! that was cool found it very interesting you should run it as is there is plenty of action even though the striper was brief and looked like a nice sized one too! Gonna watch it again thanks for sharing that Kong!
I learned that TROUGH is pronounced traaf not trau · uhl Other than that, as a surf fisherman from SoCal and Bahia Mexico, I found your video spot on.
Interesting thanks for sharing I like calling it that but nice to know, I have heard that plenty before, much appreciate the kind words to, all the best and tightlines!
And so cool to hear from you fron So Cal very cool thanks again!
First!!! I will be back JR!
If I only had one this is the one! thanks Aaron!
Two is a charm!
We come to Jerry for good info, good videos, and his always pleasant demeanor. e.e. cummings spells with small letters...and he's famous...
it is bedazzling to be mentioned in the same sentence as cummings (i had to use all small letter in this sentence!) @@frankzima7998
