Lyttelton and the bays were pretty severely hit by the quake, they were close to the epicentre. Not only did buildings collapse, but several houses were hit by massive rocks falling from the hills and cliffs above. Many homes in the area were written off, which is why you see so many new ones. I used to live near the Tannery when it was still a working leather tannery. The smell was terrible, but on the flipside, the rent was incredibly cheap as a result!

Just how old are you? The tannery closed in 1959 and became storage buildings until Cassells bought it in 1994 and started restoring it. You sure you're not thinking of Davis Gelatine over the other side of the river that was destroyed by fire.

Part of the summit road has been closed since the earthquake and was extensively damaged and rock falls. It is really only a scenic drive and does not really serve any other purpose. The cost to repair is better spent on more important projects in Christchurch but hopefully it can be re-opened in the future

You can still drive up to the top of the gondola, but you have to go from the Sumner end of the road now. As others have said part of the stretch of Summit Road that connects Dyers Pass to the Gondola top got closed following the earthquakes as parts of it were heavily damaged by rockfalls.

One thing I can suggest is don't always trust Google reviews for coffee shops or cafes. Here in the south island most of the time it'll always be a double shot and generally it's serviced hot. If your looking for a good coffee it's normally best to ask a local first. Also try the cheese rolls.

Port Hills named after the Port. The Tunnel is the only one through an active volcano. Akaroa and Lyttleton are collapsed volcanoes. Sign of the Kiwi, Takahe and Packhorse are rest stops for the early settlers comming over the Bridle Path.
Ferrymead Historic Park is cheap to get in to.

Hi Glen & Mado! It has been so much fun watching your videos that UA-cam randomly suggested for me xD
I live in Christchurch but have seen very little of the North Island (which is terrible, because I've been lucky enough to travel overseas a bit) so it's been fun getting to see my own country through fresh eyes!! I love Lyttleton and you were so very close to my favourite bays to take friends and family, Corsair and Rāpaki bays. I also love that you're going to be in Dunedin for Christmas, so am I as that's my home town. Christchurch is the "English" town as you picked up with all the extremely original names "London Street, Manchester Street, Worchester, NEW Brighton beach (not to be confused with the original Brighton... haha the colonisers were so creative). Dunedin was predomintly colonised by the Scots (clue in the name) so you'll see lots of Scottish throwbacks while you'll there. St Clair beach is a nice little place that people like to surf at and there are salt water pools that have reopened (I've never been!). I think it's worth a trip to Aramoana which is a tiny (quite quiet, sometimes a little moody) town which unforunately suffered a tragedy back in the 90s and so there is still a heavy atmosphere at times but the place and it's people are beautiful (seals like to visit and have a little swim and nosey around). There is also the Royal Albatross colony a little further up round the penisula with Larnach Castle (NeW ZeAlAnD'S OnLy CaSTle lol) with some pretty fab and spooky history but tbh the prices have gone up again and when I took my granny there a couple of years ago I was quite shocked. Still a fun place to explore. All the best and safe travels on your next journey, maybe the stars will align and I'll run into you in Dunners (Dunedin) over Christmas!!! Have a very Merry Christmas indeed and thanks for your lovely videos exploring our wee slice of paradise xo

You guys have really done a good job checking out all the key places in Chch. I was trying to think if there's anything else that is worthwhile checking out/doing and I can only think of a few things. You might like to check out the Riccarton Bush, Orana Park, Styx mill, and Willowbank maybe? Biking from the university into town is quite nice (goes through Riccarton bush and Hagley Park). Depends on what you're interested in I guess. There may be people who talked about this under the other Chch video but the Arts Centre is one of the key parts of the city. It was originally where the University was located, and there's a section of it that you can go into and see how it used to be like. Then it was repurposed as an arts hub in the city, then the earthquake happened and it was seriously damaged, forcing all the people there out. Now it has gotten a lot of it back which is nice. The university also now uses a large portion of the south side of the Arts Centre for the music and classics departments, with practice rooms, recital room (which has concerts on many Fridays from the students), a classics museum (Teece Museum), and other small spaces. A famous place in the Arts Centre which had to leave due to the earthquakes (but I believe has returned now) is the Fudge Cottage. I remember going there as a little kid with my school. They would do a tour of the fudge making process and get us to taste all the interesting flavours they were making. So that might be something to check out. There's a good chance that if/when you read this you're already gone but I've still got to represent my home town!

I think I like Akaroa much more than Lyttleton. I have been to Akaroa twice, the first time on Radiance of the Seas and the second time by road from Christchurch. I remember waking up in the morning and looking out the window at a beautiful view. My great grandfather owned and operated one of, if not, the first powered sawmill in a bay near Akaroa. However, Lyttleton looks like it has improved since I was last there. I believe that the harbour is an extinct volcano crater. Thank you for another great video. From Sydney Australia 🇦🇺

I don't know if you know, but the traditional nickname for Christchurch is "The Garden City" I remember being upstairs in one of the University Of Canterbury buildings in summer. The view just looked like a forest with a few tall buildings poking through. I have an uncle who actually apprenticed as a gardener in the Christchurch Botanical Gardens. Lyttleton and Akaroa harbours (and the Port Hills) are the remains of two volcanoes. I strongly recommend having a look another time. As a child, my parents and I acted a couple of times as caretakers during the summer holiday for Cholmondely House in Governors Bay. A mansion turned into a short term children's home, it was both isolated and only 30 minutes drive from our house in Christchurch. Akaroa was originally French settlement that started within days of the Brits getting the Treaty of Watangi ratified by local Maori and claiming sovereignty over the South Island. Hector's Dolphins are the best (you can swim with them!) Lyttleton town is not very exciting but the ferry is worth doing (especially to Quail Island!) I hope you continue to have great experiences in the South Island!

It reminded me of the Freedom Trail in Boston - it's a line marking a tourism route to highlight important and historical areas in the city.
