Cheap Bench Grinder modification

  • Being a power tool with high speed rotating stones, I made this modification at my own risk and I showcase it here for demonstration only as an experiment. If you find this inspiring for your own uses please remember that what you do is not my responsibility and whatever you do with your tools is at your own risk.
    2023 Update: there are several people criticising this video and its contents. To all them I say that perhaps you misunderstood my purpose. The purpose was to not have the sparks flying on one's face or body while sharpening blades. The wheel is spinning THE OPPOSITE WAY, UPWARDS FROM DOWN rather than downwards from top. The bottom exit is not directed at the operator's face but away from it since it has been turned upwards. No polarity is changed. I take the point that on one side there may be a need to block the gap. This is a cheap grinder for light home use and general sharpening, any of you professionals can carry on doing your heavy duty grinding for work as best you know, I am not here to tell you what to do. This is for those who are uncomfortable with a grinder that is facing and spitting debris and sparks towards them like I am. As for gloves, if I wish to protect my fingers from being accidentally grated I will use some dedicated thin gloves, and believe me I still have my grip and no risk of them being sucked in as you say. The stone has the same probability of exploding as in the standard configuration, but the wheel is spinning upwards and guards are oriented at 45° upwards so that any debris, including your "exploded stone", will go away from the operator towards the rear of the tool, look at where the opening is.
    Finally, I have been doing DIY safely for decades and I never had the slightest accident, I am not as stupid, irresponsible or ignorant as some of you think. Others have appreciated my reasoning on this and I have used this grinder several times in this configuration with no issues.
    P.S. The knives and blades I have sharpened like this are actually sharper. I am not a professional metal worker so I don't care about the final finish, just getting sharper blades at home for free is good enough.
    ======================================================
    A bench grinder is a very useful tool for quick and precise sharpening and general grinding or sanding of various metals and hard materials. What makes a bench grinder more useful than an angle grinder or a mini-tool is that you move your item against the tool and not the other way around.
    They can be quite cheap but they often are configured in a way that SOME, LIKE ME, find too cumbersome and ineffective, and in my opinion not that comfortable.
    In this video I will demonstrate how you can safely, easily and quickly modify one of these cheap grinders to work much better for sharpening and precise work. No additional expense is required (unless you too buy a white wheel), nor sophisticated tools other than a screwdriver, and the change is non-destructive and completely reversible, so you can return the grinder to its original state should you change your mind or for warranty purposes.
    Obviously whatever you do with your tools is at your own risk.

    It's actually unsafe to use gloves because they can get caught and hurt your hand badly

    • @pr0xZen
      @pr0xZen 4 роки тому

      True, but it can be just as unsafe _without_ gloves, if the grinder grabs or kicks the piece, shifting it a lot or even shooting it off into your fingers/hands. Or working on small pieces, your fingers/hands meet the wheel. Then of course, there's severe burns from hot work pieces.
      I would suggest using common sense. Don't use gloves that are too big, especially in the fingers so you get floppy glove finger tips, and just _be aware and attentive_ to the risks, and where your gloves are ik relation to the grinder wheel (or band) at all times when wearing them.

    • @rpnp2
      @rpnp2 4 роки тому +1

      @@pr0xZen Do what you want, but it's bad practice to use gloves while working around any rotary equipment even under powered ones like this grinder. And you never even want your materials to be hot enough to create a severe burn period because it either ruins the finish or temper of the material.

    You might want to swap the steady rests side to side, right to left, left to right. This will place the flat portion right at the wheel.

    Never reverse the polarity of the grinder's motor. The threads are made so that it tightens the wheel as the wheel spins. If you reverse the polarity it will losen the wheels.

    I see very many grinder/ sharpener vids where you turn it around, as is mine, but that's just dedicated rigs for sharpening, usually for the mdf wheels, not general rough grinding. I put a big directional arrow on top in case I forget, and the first thing I do with grinders is toss the view shield, hang a good pair of safety glasses nearby with a cloth draped over them to keep shop dust off.

    This is NOT a good idea! Please check some information from a reputable source if you do not believe me! 1. Do NOT wear gloves .... they can snag and will then drag your hand into the grinder at a frightening speed (broken bones will be the least of your problems then) 2. The grind direction is downwards for good reason ... The sharp edge you want will have burrs on it if you go the other way and the edge will tend to bevel over! Sharpening towards the work will leave a clean edge! 3. If you hold your work at the top (wheel going away from you) the kinetic energy is dragging the work into the wheel and you will struggle to hold it steady. Also if it does drag your reflex will be to push away against the wheel ... NOT Good! 4. The thin perspex is designed to deflect any sparks away from your face, NOT to provide a little window to look through! Why would a few sparks hitting you on the body (I assume you would be wearing clothing) affect you? 6. If you look up "Grinders Nose" you will see why inhaling any of the crud thrown out by a grinder is not conducive to long life! 8 out of 10 for trying though! Please note I am not having a go at you .... just trying to convince you to get more information and revise your work practice!

    Me parece interesante la posibilidad de cambiar el sentido de rotación y el cambio de la posición del área sin protección "para desbastar con las piedras", esto abre posibilidades para muchos que no sentimos que la posición predeterminada por el fabricante sea la mas cómoda para algunos trabajos. Por otra parte seria bueno implementar un regulador de velocidad a tu maquinaria, dado que en el caso de afilar se necesitan bajas revoluciones para no sobre-calentar y/o quemar el metal, ademas de ayudar en la seguridad con un equipo que no se esta usando exactamente como lo indica su fabricante. También existen discos de resina de nailon que no sobre-calientan las superficies metálicas a afilar y disponibles hasta en grano #3000, lo que permite afilados supremos.👍

    I wear gloves when using my dremel, as well as hang it securely. At least, when using a cut off wheel on it, as it slipped thru my ungloved grip and cut right into my knuckle instantly. On a bench grinder I can see why you'd want to keep your hands bare. Or maybe cut the fingers off some gloves and use just the finger tips of the glove, thus they can easily come off.

  •  6 років тому +4

    Thumbs up. I was reading the comments and some say that stones break and shatter and would hurt you. But the motion is away from you unlike the original which will throw the broken stones into your stomach area. The only concern is if any lose clothing got caught, but my grinder as soon as you put any load on it slows and stalls. They just do not have the power. I like what you did and will do it to mine. The way this is set up.... How he is grinding... If a small object is pulled from his hand it's going inside the wheel gaurd and it's gonna reverse direction and come out the end where his tool rest is.
    The regular way of grinding pinches your work peice between the wheel and tool rest almost shearing.
    The plastic gaurd is only ment for small dust. Usually a heavier metal gaurd is attached with the plastic one so that if any object traveled along the inside of the gaurds that additional gaurd will stop it.
    On his, he don't have a gaurd where and object could shoot from... It's his tool rest which is angled to act as a reflector directing the metal at his face..
    His main concern is SPARKS... But Sparks aren't the hazard. It's wheel explosion and objects pulled from your hand entering the gaurd traveling around it and shooting out the end closeat to his face

    • @SaucyTreasures
      @SaucyTreasures 7 років тому +5

      Wow, that is a dangerous statement! Using properly fitting gloves protects your hands and fingers from abrasion and heat, not to mention a barrier that sacrifices leather instead of fingers! I have had a polishing wheel grab my gloved fingertip when I was polishing metal, and it was a real wake-up call! I was fortunate that it was my glove that had gotten caught instead of my bare finger. It sure made me aware of my technique when holding small pieces of metal when polishing.

    • @SanFranBlitz
      @SanFranBlitz 7 років тому +10

      SaucyTreasures Gloves can aid in protection from abrasions however, if an accident does happen and your gloved hand gets caught somehow in a powerful rotary tool, it can remove the glove, along with skin, bone or worse yet, half your arm. It is acceptable to wear gloves when your hands are well clear of the wheel (6 inches or more) and never get closer, however is ill advised and frankly unsafe to wear gloves when holding a small part to the grinder. Never wear gloves when a wire wheel is mounted on your grinder. The same goes for working with a lathe. No long sleeves, gloves or neck ties. An anvil might fall on your head.

      The bench grinder is not designed for precision use. It can easily sharpen knives, but don't expect a fine edge... especially on an 60 grit wheel. Your statement about needing to protect eyes... that's what the plastic shields were for. If your issue is the sparks coming at you... wear something long sleeved, and not easily flammable. The issue is the way you were using it. If your preference is for the machine to grind on the "pull" as opposed to pushing into the wheel, that's your choice; but if the thing you are grinding gets pulled from your grip and jams in the wheel guard, you stand a chance of breaking the motor, or exploding the grinding stone which you already pointed out may have unseen flaws. Heaven forbid your finger gets pulled into the wheel guard. You push into the wheel to grind as a safety precaution, rather than risking things catching & and being pulled by the wheel.
      Have you considered that if you aren't comfortable using the machine as designed, then it's not the right tool for you, or the job?

    Very clever idea I have only one reservation what would happen if the grinding wheel exploded as they sometimes do it could blow past those flimsy eye guards directly into the operators face. Would you not recommend thicker eye guards of possibly 1/4 inch thick polycarbonate securely mounted on angle iron bracket just a thought.......

      The motion of the wheel is going away from you unlike the original which is moving towards you. If a wheel break the original would throw pieces into your stomach area where as his adjustment would throw them away from you.

    Honestly, please take this video down. Your suggestions are well-intentioned and clever, but are based on misconceptions about how to use it and actually make the grinder vastly more dangerous. You have assembled the grinder incorrectly from the start, intend to use the grinder incorrectly (when sharpening a knife, the cutting edge should be facing the oncoming surface - you then know you have ground to the edge when you see hints of sparks on the very top edge) and you give incorrect safety advice.
    Please, remove this video.

      I think your tool rests are on backwards, that "kick down" should not be against the wheel.
      If the tool rests are the other way around, you can set them up at 90 degrees (or any other angle) without a "v" formed by the "kick down" and wheel, which can jam your workpiece if it's small enough or rolls over into the "v".

      The opening of his wheel gaurd near where the plastic lense is attached..that opening needs blocked off.
      Things will be pulled away from him, go down into the gaurd travel around changing direction and coming out where his tool rest is.
      At first I didn't immediately catch the safety concern. Now I do.
      That tool rest is gonna direct any object pulled into the gaurds directly tword his face
      Probably not a screw driver but something smaller most deffinently will enter the opening of the wheel gaurd that is away from him. that opening needs a thick peice tightly abutted against the wheel to prevent anything from traveling the wheel gaurd and coming out the end the tool rest is attached.
      The angle of the tool rest will most deffinently direct and object your way.

    I got a cheap grinder set up according to the manufacturer and it works great and is pretty safe as it has a few additional thick metal gaurds that attach to the wheel gaurds.
    I may make a video explaining why the traditional method is more safe then this.
    He's got wheel gaurds but wheel gaurds have attachments of thicker steel that attach to the top opening of the wheel gaurd along with the plastic viser. Preventing objects from being taken down into the gaurd.
    The tool rest should be 90 degrees closest to the wheel as possible preventing any thing from being pulled down into the gaurd.

    I see the good and bad here. I do like the improved angle for sharpening and the sparks flying away from you. But, what disturbs me is what happens in case of the wheel breaking apart. When the direction of spin is reversed, you will get the chunks of the grinding wheel in your face, the tool rest doesn't really block the spinning fragments from flying up. You would need to have serious whole body protection to shield yourself.
    If there were a way to provide more shielding to deflect the fragments of a failed grinder wheel, I would feel more secure with changing the direction of spin. Having said that, the manufacturers would NEVER stand behind such a manipulation. Be careful with the adaptations.

      He may be an engineer.
      Secondly.. the inner wheel gaurds have six possible holes for mounting it to the machine and only uses 3 screws.
      The extra screw holes are there because the manufacturer intended people to be able to face the gaurds upwards.
      If it was a huge safety concern there would only be three holes giving no POSSIBILITY of altering it
      I am positive the wheel gaurds are meant to either face you or face upwards. The manufacturer would of never put the extra holes in if not.

    • @k3ith29
      @k3ith29 6 років тому +1

      Raban A Burr
      The only reason you don't see many do that is because many don't have a great need to do it, there is absolutely nothing wrong with facing the gaurd opening up. The manufacturer intended that by putting extra unused holes.

    • @k3ith29
      @k3ith29 6 років тому

      Raban A Burr
      I have to eat my words.
      The more I thought about this the more I realized the safety concern.
      In the normal configuration, the idea is to have the tool youre grinding press against the tool rest.
      Where the safety sheild is.. mine has an additional sheild to block any metal from being pulled down into the working end, travel through the wheel gaurd and out the top where the sheild is attached.
      That plastic sheild isn't to stop big chuncks only dust. An additional thick metal gaurd is attached to the wheel gaurd where the plastic gaurd is and it is abutted next to the wheel.
      So should you be grinding a small object and it gets pulled down into the wheel gaurd....it will travel around and come out the top. The additional metal gaurd will block it.
      However in this configuration... The way his tool rest is positioned...it won't block an object.
      He believes it is safer because Sparks go away from him, but Sparks aren't the major concern.
      He believes that all the objects will fly twords the wall.....
      However the way he has it, a small peice that he is grinding could be grapped from his hand and taken down in to the wheel gaurd where his plastic lense is attached. He's got nothing blocking that opening.
      Thus, a small OBJECT will travel tword the wall and potentially down into the gaurd, travel the interior, reverse direction and shoot out the end where his tool rest is. The tool rest is positioned in such a way that should an object fly from that end.... The tool gaurd will ricochet the object twords your face.
      The top of the wheel he is grinding from is traveling away from him, but the bottom of the wheel is traveling tword him.
      So objects can shoot from his hand, go down the gaurd through the opening furthest from him, travel around and come out the end closest to him.
      Granted a screw driver probably won't go down the gaurd but will hit the wall.
      But any other smaller objects that happens to be pulled from his hand may shoot down that opening furthest from him and come out close to him.
      This is only my second day studying a bench grinder and abrasive wheels.... So I'm comprehending now why the traditional method is more safe.

      thanks for considering me a nice guy but then you say I know nothing and my video is full of nonsense... Did you actually watch it all?
