I hope after the movies, if they truly will sadly be the final for the anime adaptation, that people go and read the manga and experience this story again. A lot of things were cut from the anime. And Furudate-sensei's paneling and art is so good that it matches up well to the direction and animation of the adaptation. A lot of supplemental art also became available after the end of the series which are always enjoyable. I love this manga so much and while I'm devastated it will not get the proper full adaptation treatment that it deserves, I hope that encourages people to pick up the manga and enjoy it in its fully glory.

I'm only around 10 minutes in and I'm already getting some nice discussions here :))
I just want to emphasize as well that it's never about winning and losing to Hinata, he just wants to stay in the court the longest. Just like what Carson said, he wants to play and he always gives his best because he loves volleyball so much and wants to prolong every moment of experiencing it. That's all it is and I think that's beautiful.
Stories like this always focus on the outcome of the match but like Kita said, "I am built upon the small things I do everyday and the results are no more than a byproduct of that." And that's the essence of Haikyuu for me. It's never about the end. It's about the journey.

37:51 Good news is that, as approved by the 37th FIVB Congress in 2021, starting from 2022 onwards, liberos are now allowed to be team captains! But since "Haikyuu!!" is set in 2012 (and the manga has started in 2012), it's sad to think that Noya and the other liberos weren't given the chance to be the captains of their teams.

Fantastic podcast! Really well done. You guys have reached new heights with this one.
Really got to dive in deeper on your guy's outlook on the whole story. Somethings that were explained briefly during the reaction discussions got better time, and the questions that others asked really brought out how much you guys cares about Haikyuu.
Haikyuu has been such an amazing journey and even though we will be facing issues with the next releases for the movies, I believe that I'll still be able to enjoy it if the pacing is right.
Other than, the setup looks AMAZING and fits with well, the conversations are a lot more fluid, even in a multi-camera set-up. Lindsay too has come a long way towards being more open in front of a camera and ofcourse Carson really good at expressing himself too.
Nicely done. Looking forward to the things you bring to table in the future!

19:36 I wanted to make a point regarding this actually. I’ve always felt like there was a sense of urgency in Hinata. Like yes he pulled up to this camp to play, but not just to play, but because he thought he was good enough to attend it. His sense of urgency caused him to make a dumb decision and literally skip school. Seeing how his teammates Kageyama and Tsukki were scouted for these amazing camps and he was being left behind. I always took that scene as Hinata almost being a little jealous seeing as he was always competing with Kageyama, and at this point in time he saw no flaw in his overall skill as a player. It was only after his encounter with Shiratorizawa’s coach and the words from Ushijima where he realized flaw in his play and wanted to change. Hinata’s desire to be better, his desire to improve, and his overall passion for the sport is what led him to being able to figure out what his flaws were in due time. It’s almost a parallel to season 2 where he wanted to improve on his own after their loss to Seijoh etc. I find his talk with Shiratorizawa’s to be such an important scene in the series because it’s true. It tells Hinata that if he really wanted to improve and be better he has to improve in ALL aspects of the sport, not just hitting.

Kinoshita's in my top 3 personally, because he represents the other side of the coin.
He literally says it iirc, he REALLY wanted to have his big anime moment that would have everyone going crazy over him, the same moment Yamaguchi had, but realistically, he doesn't.
The level of play we have starting with the second Seijoh game and onward is so fucking high that it's easy to see why Kinoshita couldn't magically get 3 points or something.
    It's real.

You guys are my favorite Haikyuu reactors! I won't comment any spoilers about what happens after S4, but *MANGA SPOILER TAG FROM S1-4*, just in case. I would like to suggest to those who have not, to read the manga after watching the final movies. I think a lot of people would be forced to read the manga since the final movies would cut a lot of things.
A lot of your (slight) dissatisfactions from S1-4 can be alleviated by reading the manga: about 3rd yrs having more moments in S3 & 4, Asahi's (& Dateko's) missing arc in S4, Kinoshita having more screen time & real arc in S4, why Kenma is both feared & beloved since S1, Kenma's wholesome-instead-of-creepy-friendship moments with Hinata, more moments w/ the managers & adviser Takeda-sensei... But if you're gonna read the manga from the very beginning, then ignore the rest of my comment lol.
39:00 Noya is mentioned as a genius alongside Kageyama ONLY in Miyagi prefecture. Yaku of Nekoma gets the same level or more praise in Tokyo that spikers like Bokuto and others who constantly play in Nationals call Yaku a spike-killer.
42:00 Kinoshita's S4 arc wasn't supposed to be about being Yamaguchi's rival as a pinch setter. In the manga, his arc was very much obviously about the *benchwarmers*. If it weren't for the benchwarmers practicing with the regulars every day, they would have never reached nationals and beat Inarizaki. I cried reading/watching HIS VBALL MOMENT of helping Nishinoya receive the float serve, bec in Nishinoya's rare time of need & fear, it was a benchwarmer who saved him. Not Asahi, Tanaka, Hinata nor the 3rd yrs... it was Kinoshita. Appreciate your game supports haha.
49:00 The anime failed to deliver the potential Dateko has during S4, since you were obviously underwhelmed. There's a legit strategy they do in real vball called Serve & Block. If you hit a service ace, good. If not, your serve should be one that is difficult to receive (whether from a jump or float serve); making it difficult for the setter to toss, therefore making the opponent attack wobbly and easy to block. It's tried & tested to be deadly, and that's what Dateko was trying out in S4. Haikyuu has been showing this technique over and over since we've met Oikawa and other powerful servers, but it was in the manga S4 Dateko match where it was highlighted & explained further. Dateko already has the best 3-man blockers in their prefecture, and now, all their spikers are practicing jump serves. That's why, in the anime, Ukai said that Dateko may be their worst rival next year after the 3rd yrs leave. After Daichi leaves, we have no receiving expert aside from Noya. As we've seen in S2, Karasuno almost lost without Daichi's non-flashy but consistent receives even when they still had Asahi as the ace & Noya as main defender.
57:20 Oikawa's in my top 3 characters bec he's the tragic character. He KNOWS Kageyama will surpass him & it's inevitable. He fails not only in preventing Kageyama to surpass him, but also fails beating Ushiwaka (for at least 4yrs in a row since middle school). No matter how much he progresses, how much he achieves, and how much other teams fear him, he can't seem to overcome his insecurities towards Ushijima and Kageyama.... because the results show that he and his team lost, repeatedly. Karasuno may be the underdog against Seijoh, but Oikawa was the underdog against Ushiwaka's might & Kageyama's genius.
1:07:30 Kenma is feared & beloved since S1 bec he plays vball like a chess master even more than Tsuki and, dare I say, Oikawa. Since S1, almost every time Kenma moves, he has an inner monologue about his strategies much like what you see with Tsuki in S3. He's not liked bec of the otaku stereotype, but bec he's an introvert who breaks the stereotype. He's a non-athletic introvert with social anxiety & low stamina that can rip your super physical teams apart. Even among Nekoma, Kenma is THE predator cat that stalks you in the night. If you read his inner monologues from S1-4, you'd see how much thought & effort he puts in the game even when he says he feels lukewarm about vball.
1:28:31 My fave non-vball side character might not be categorically correct: Shimada, Yamaguchi's mentor. He's a vball player but we never see him play after S1. In the manga S4, when Shimada runs across the large Tokyo stadium just to put up a plastic bag to calm Yamaguchi.... I cried, man. His support of Yamaguchi through all those arcs... he should be a proud dad/brother.
2:22:46 Although the anime has reached S4 and 2 final movies are confirmed, I can't get over S3's victory where I saw Karasuno 3rd yrs cry in joy, especially since, at the time of S3, I didn't know if there going to be more anime sequels. If the anime ended there, I would have been satisfied they animated the confirmation that 3rd yrs would stay longer and finally reach nationals. I would have been content to know the rest of the story by reading the manga.

I know I’m commenting on this like a year later but I’ve finally finished binging your Haikyuu reactions, and I loved every second of it!
For well-written characters, I think a character that really could’ve been incredibly written if he had only gotten more screen-time is Kindaichi, one of Kageyama’s jr. high teammates.
I’ve loved Haikyuu since 2020, and something I’ve noticed is that when talking about characters they dislike, a lot of people mention Kindaichi, probably because of him and the rest of his team rejecting Kageyama as the King of the Court and that scene after Karasuno’s practice match with Seijoh when he told Kageyama to not apologize, how he wouldn’t apologize either, and how they were never friends in the first place. But I think that’s such a surface level view of him, and if people actually took the time to try to grasp his character, he’d rise higher in those well-written-character lists.
He was in //middle school// when the King of the Court incident happened, and he wasn’t the ONLY one. And we can see that the incident affected him just as much as it affected Kageyama, which can especially be seen at the end of the prefectural training camp arc when he shows genuine concern for how Kageyama is doing.
We can also see this in one of the Seijoh matches (i forget which one), where Kindaichi is hesitating, and Oikawa tells him how he sees it- Kindaichi saw how well Hinata and Kageyama work together & how Kageyama became a better person, and he was thinking back to how it was //him// and Kageyama who were kind of partners back then, and, if Hinata could draw that out of Kageyama and get him to not be such an asshole, could he have? If he tried harder, could he have done the same thing? But Oikawa told him not to worry about it and just try to beat them.
I’m actually pretty sure that was in the first Seijoh match, because that scene was subtle, but it set up for the final point where it was Kindaichi who blocked Hinata. And, in the flashbacks to Karasuno being utterly defeated at the loss, you can look across the net and see the entirety of Seijoh praising Kindaichi for the block. He had his own mini-character-arc that was hardly shown at all.
Then, looking forward at the next Seijoh match, where Hinata did a wipe and Oikawa couldn’t get the ball, the ball bounced off //Kindaichi’s// fingers.
Hinata and Kindaichi have this rivalry that is so subtle, because it’s pretty much a one-sided rivalry. Hinata focuses on either what he did right or wrong himself, while Kindaichi focuses on Kageyama and Hinata because that’s a hurdle in his own story that he has to jump over.
If we look back at that scene between Kageyama and Kindaichi after the practice match, he says all these negative things, sure, but he also states WHY he said them. He tells Kageyama to not apologize and he’ll continue to see him as this oppressive dictator //because he wants to beat him.// This serves as MOTIVATION for him. If Kageyama suddenly became a good person, Kindaichi would feel awful about what he did in jr. high, and that motivation to kick Karasuno’s ass wouldn’t be there. And the thing is, this happens anyway because he sees Kageyama grow so much that he can’t deny it anymore, but he ends up still feeling this rivalry because it’s not just him- all of Seijoh wants to beat Karasuno. He’s not alone on the court, which goes back to the King of the Court with Kageyama but on a smaller scale, and IT’S SO GOOD.
I could talk about him more and more, and how every single detail with him is incredible, but this is already a long enough ramble as it is. I just believe if that arc he went through actually had more screen time, people would appreciate him more, especially because he’s someone in the same year as our protagonists and on a rival team, and there’s already personal stakes between our protagonists and him, and he has the potential to be a really great rival.

Thank you for taking the time to have this discussion. Too bad I couldn't watch it "live".
Also too bad that, in the meantime, they announced season 5 as two final movies. This takes away a lot of possibilities for the future (like, no way in 3 hour there will be a match to match progression until Hinata's graduation, sorta like where Ace of diamond is going). There like 1/3 of the manga remaining, but I understand why they made this choice. The show has this crescendo season after season, the more you can play and you like volleyball, the more you can enjoy it. I guess for non player or casual viewers this progression could be boring.
Maybe the choice originated from the feedback for S4. That season is regarded as less good, but it's very interesting from a player perspective. You just have to pick things up yourself, with a lot of references to past games.
22:00 I agree, many oriental stories (therefore anime and manga) are about physical and mental domination of your opponent, even fights are in reality chess games where you announce your plays and you win before you start. Haikyuu's defining trait is optimism and positivity, the show highlights good stuff, not sadness or rage.
49:00 on Asahi: because S4 is the most realistic, Asahi has less screentime because his role is set from the beginning, and a lot of things happen in the match. Then as you know, we see like 1/3 of the points, I'm sure Asahi did his fine job offscreen.
About Dateko: a crack in the wall is the wall's demise, so we see a weak Dateko because of the setter, but at the end of the match, Ukai (I guess) stated they are gonna be problematic as soon as the setter learns his way (remember Karasuno in S1.. the yearly turnover of the teams is a BIG theme in the whole show). The last Dateko match is both a benchmark for Karasuno progression and to set up a future menace, as a fact itself (with or without a future rematch)
1:03:30 on Kenma: LOL at the hope for season 6! Kenma basically is an example of the fact that volleyball attracts many kind of people, unlike other more popular sports. Not really a spoiler, in the final part of the manga there's something about this variety of people playing the same sport.
1:07:00 injuries are spectacular and part of a player's life. But you have to consider the fact that in volleyball you can't have contact with other players. 99% of the injuries you can thing about are from contacts (even Daichi's lol), in football, basketball and even soccer, you end up with an injury because someone hurt you. When you are on the court with a few allies, the possibilities lower a lot. There are a few minor things that can happen, but most of the time during a match the worst that can happen to you is a 100 km/h (60 mph) ball in the face.
Even so, we watched like 10 karasuno official matches in the span of 6 months, so having people breaking legs would have been a little too much. Very different from a regular NBA or MLB season, for example.
1:29:00 There's no space for the sensei in the big matches because he's kinda useless. Like, he's a symbol for the many schools that don't have a big club, so they just have an enthusiastic sensei letting people play (something every anime fan saw many many times in other occasions, non only with sports)
1:44:00 The Inarizaki match is insane. talking about the sport side of the show, it's by far the best game, is the game where we see everybody in the team finally aware of what they can do. We see references from every other match, it's a huge step up and a "real" match, whereas the previus matches were "just" more epic because of the animation style.
    2:04:00 Harry Potter final!! XD

Haikyuu is certainly at the top of sports anime, but it is also compelling and very immersive into this niche world and written with total adoration for the sport. I had similar anime experiences with Welcome to the Ballroom (competitive dancing) and Nodame Cantabile (classical music world). Nodame is not exactly shonen, but still an amazing growth story about talented albeit a little weird people. I find Ballroom is very similar to Haikyuu in the setup, sense of community, friendly competition and even animation style.

Haikyuu is easily 10/10. I agree with you guys. The manga is crazy good too, I'm telling you. Definitely recommend to read it.
I love the anime, and watched all seasons multiple times. Big fan. It's so complex and consistent in it's quality that you fall in love with the sport as well as the individual characters - and not just protagonists - you can empathize with many characters.
After I finished watching season 4, I went to read the manga, and it only got better in my opinion. Imagine that. As good as the anime is, the story in the manga continues to give you that exact same high quality development and the volleyball gets EVEN BETTER. It's just crazy good how well Haikyuu is written. I've re-read the last ~200 chapters multiple times (2-3 times) with the same enthusiasm I watched the anime. There is material for 1-2 animated seasons there for sure, and the viewers will love it. I have no doubt. The manga is finished by the way.

    1. Liberos aren't allowed to be captain because they switch out so often. It still shouldn't be a problem but wtv
    2. I really like Kenma because honestly, as someone who did competitive stuff in high school at a very high level, not everyone who does it will love it. Not even the supremely talented ones. This isn't even college where you have scholarships on the line. I feel like Kenma adds that much needed dynamic because no one else seems to have the perspective
    3. I see what you mean about Kinnoshita, I actually think he exists to remind the audience that just training DOESN'T ensure success. He spent so much time thinking about his ace and the joy of a cool moment that he failed.

I'm actually really surprised to hear y'all's thoughts on what people are probably interested in when getting into anime. Anime gets a really bad rap due to being weird, overtly sexual, problematic content, etc, and so, in my experience, people are far more likely to get into anime when they find out that there are more toned down and easy to digest shows like Haikyuu. For the friends I've introduced to anime, once they see the more easily accessible shows, they are able to accept and embrace the weirdness of anime and go down different paths.

Itachiyama libero ( Motoya Komori)is the no.1 libero in Japan and Nishinoya is no.2 in Japan. Also, Nekoma libero looks up to Nishinoya and asked him about ROLLING THUNDER in the season 2 training arc. In short, Nishinoya is better than Nekoma's libero and he is a genius also.

I'm sorry but where was it said that noya is no.2?
imo yaku and noya are kinda equal in terms of skill because we've seen they both look up to each other from the moment they met essentially.

    • @vinodmeshram6120

@@moneera44 so Noya does pancake recive more often than Yaku which is so hard and Noya's reflexes are God tier and he has good game sense as well and he got the best libero award in middle school in Miyagi prefecture which is considered better than normal prefecture in volleyball but even if we forget about all this thing and say that Noya and Yaku both are equal the fact that Noya can set adds up to his skill and I gave them placement based on the character shown.

I can't believe yall be dissing my son (kenma) to my face rn!! (jk lol)
also I don't comment on videos often so this is gonna be *very long*
buckle up (and sorry in advance):
it is indeed fairly true that kenma is hyped by the manga readers... and with the movies announcement I'm sadly pretty certain that the matches will be reduced to essentially just a 'check list' of iconic scenes to be given color and music with just the slightest bit of motion...
which is unfortunate because the nekoma match especially is really all *build up and anticipation* and deserves a proper 10-12 episode adaption, even if they somehow make a whole movie about the nekoma match (which I doubt since they have to squeeze 110 chapters into 4 hours) the pacing for that movie would be a bit off, because they'd be adapting the 30 chapter match into 5 chapters (a whole extra 19 pages) per 20 minutes; instead of the usual 3-4 chapters per 20 minutes the anime does, which means if they want to finish the nekoma match with time to spare they'd at least have to do 6 chapters per 20 minutes (freaking *double* the anime...)
which also means that at least some of the little character development arcs haikyuu is known for and maybe even comedy will take be removed... (I'm still salty at the removal of tora's development in the tokyo qualifiers and the botched adaption of some of nohebi's players - kuguri and numai's - development in the ovas... and even the inarizaki match was done so dirty... - in many regards tbh hhhh - especially with episode 15 of season 4 adapting 7 whole chapters in a single episode somehow and cutting some really neat stuff :) )
on another note, I'd argue that manga read through videos are both *active And reactive*
believe me you'd almost always have something that gets a reaction out of you... whether it's a beautifully drawn page spread... or an inspirational line... or some unexpected development, you can even have little discussions with each other (and maybe chat if you stream it) at the end of chapters/volumes/matches with ost in the background possibly lol.
you guys ofc saw how beautiful haruichi furudate's art and paneling work is!
and I hope that one day you'll try to get the 'authentic' - for lack of a better word- haikyuu experience.
also thank you for the great reactions and the amazing podcast video!

It's more stellar with personalities and taking it easier and overall just very good with the side cast. Not to mention the excellent manga panelling and sfx and being a wsj manga on top of all this..

That's such an edgy take lmao, just because something is good and wholesome doesn't mean it's average. Good and wholesome with some of the best character writing out there is SO damn rare, I feel like every story nowadays wants to be "different" in a way that they scream to you "look, I'm not like the other stories!". It's like people who are hardcore A Song of Ice and Fire fans saying Lord of the Rings is average because it doesn't so anything unique.
Haikyuu is a gem amidst the plethora of unpolished rocks we are getting nowadays.
