I retired in 1995 and sold everything and put my vehicles into storage. Thinking they would come in handy on my visits back. Big mistake when you break free do it all. I’ve been in Thailand for 25 years. 1 year in Bangkok, 2 years in Pattaya and the rest of the time in Chaing Mai. I love the food the people and the weather. It looks like I escaped the US just in time. I never regretted moving here. I purchased a small condo 15 years ago and remodeled it for an old man which I have become at 82. Still love it!
@ron horn thank you for you're perspective. I left the US with a suitcase, backpack and my dog a year ago and moved to Mexico at almost 50 years of age and really enjoy living out of the US. My life is so much happier, simpler, enriched and healthier. Thailand is definitely another place I want to explore. It's so freeing to get rid of everything and start an adventure at my age😊😊😊
Have only been to Thailand a few times and Chiangmai was my favorite place. My wife liked it to. Just seemed a little slower paced. Weather being a big factor. I’m 71 so beaches and sunbathing are not of much interest to me. There was tourists in the old town but once on the outskirts it was much easier going at least for us. There seemed to be a good nightlife with different things to do without the bar scene. Everyone who enjoys visiting Thailand should visit Chiangmai and if you enjoy traveling and visiting different cultural places put Thailand on your list.
I been visiting Thailand for the past 15 years, it all started with my love of Thai boxing, Thailand gave me peace and escape from western stresses. I Iove the heat, the people, the food and the beautiful nature. I now have beautiful Thai children of my own. I think Thailand is one of those countries that is loved by all who visit and want to protect its way if life. Let’s hope Thailand keeps its charm. Be honest...the women are the biggest draw. If you were single ( and you had no chance for a woman)you might like the culture , but i doubt you would live there.

Aged 21years I worked as an electrician in the very poor North East of Thailand. It was just perfect. After one year I climbed into the RAF Argosy and flew away to Singapore. My tears flowed.

Thanks Ryan for highlighting the reasons; not to come to Thailand. Believe it's absolutely imperative that travellers leave their self-important attitude back home when entering another country. For those of us who call Thailand home and adore almost every aspect of this land it can be nauseating to listen to whining disrespectful tourists. Arrive with no expectations, depart with dignity!
Your sentiments are true for any country people may visit. One must avoid comparison and judgement based on first sight for a start. Love that last sentence
While I think it is imperative to look at the positive aspects of Thailand and living in it (or any place for that matter), I believe it is equally as shortsighted to see it all through rose colored and pretend that everything here in worthy of adoration. Like every place in the world, there are indeed aspects of Thailand that aren't so good, but in general its true, its best to focus on the good parts..Not every complaint or criticism of the country is invalid, nor do people deserve to be ostracized for pointing out its faults, or told to "go home if you don't like it"...I think if you've lived here, spend time, worked, married, had kids here etc, you are perfectly entitled to express your opinions, even if they may not always be perfectly optimistic...f you truly love something, you will see if for all of what it is, good and bad..cockeyed optimism can be just as bad as perpetual pessimism..
I do love the markets in Thailand, I love watching the "us and we" mentality. Everything here in the states is "I and me". The biggest thing I love about Thailand is the thread that everyone and everything is just more connected. People need one another to survive. We visited Thailand in May 2016. The weather was great and Thai people are great. . We went everywhere including many islands. I must say we stayed in the back of the island Koh Pha ngan for 3 days in a small village and it was the best time in our lives. That will always be in my heart.
I really like Thailand - taught English there for two year back in the 2000s - but two months of the sweltering temperature is enough for me and I'm glad to get back to the UK.
I visited Thailand once in 2010 and liked very much the people and how they are with each other. They are very friendly and the climate is hot as you say.
This is a perfect example of a human being and shows me how shallow Western life has become compared to what this man has got its inspiring and lifts my heart.
First time I’ve watched your channel. Just wanted to say this was a really pleasant video to watch on bleak rainy morning in England. Great words of wisdom. Too much thinking of the past causes depression and too much thinking of the future causes anxiety. These words really resonate in my life. My Thai wife and I are looking to retire in Thailand for a slower pace of life away from the rat race. We have flights finally booked for the end of February. That’s an honest video. My wife and I both enjoyed Thailand and its people. She has told me several times she would be happy to live there. She is Filipino and other than the language and culture Thailand felt very much like home to her. In fact everyone thought she was Thai until she spoke! Hahaha. I grew up in Nevada so for me Thailand is an exotic vacation for me. I enjoy it but sometimes things drive me nuts. Also not speaking the language for me make it hard to truly know people the way I would like. We will hopefully get to visit there again a few more times before I’m unable to travel easily. We both enjoyed our time there and the food was so good. I actually lost weight there. Mostly because we walked so much. Now my ability to walk is more limited so Tuk Tuk will be our friend.
As someone who's been 40+ years in Thailand, albeit living in the city, I think your attitude is spot on. Never mind about accumulating "stuff." All the best for the future with your wonderful family. Disregard the wingers and naysayers.

Its nothing to do with color of skin, why would it? Its simply this, the Thai government stamp a non-immigrant visa in my passport, I would love to be an immigrant but they do not allow it. Usually an immigrant can become a citizen, have access to public funds and work. I cannot according to Thai law, which is why they classify me categorically as a non-immigrant. Thanks
Yes note the key word "PERMANENTLY". There is nothing permanent about my visa. A residency permit allows for permanent stay, difficult to acquire. I don't think I can explain it for you any clearer. So all the best.
We also grow bell peppers since covid and they are the same size as yours! Haha... hopefully they will get bigger over time. I love how you combine your family life, talks about your project and just showing how you guys move things forward. Awesome.
That’s a good point about drinking - it’s so easy to end up drinking all day, and all evening, until you realise you haven’t had an alcohol-free day in months. If you get into this rut, the health starts to go downhill. I know quite a few falang who have died from alcoholism in Thailand - only in their 40s.

Having lived in Thailand for over fifty years it would/is impossible to imagine having to return to the United States. The thought,to me,is as foreign as having to live on Mars. Yes, Thailand has gone, for me, far far past "I Love Thailand". It is truly a part of me. I've rebuilt Khmer ruins, and worked as Design Manager for a large furnituyre company for 35 years and I was adopted 51 years ago so yes, I have the Thai Government Social Security Medical Program. My home is Buriram/Surin.

You've totally got it. Just retired here from UK on Koh Chang. but lived in BKK for 5 years in 80's. Lived in slum with Thai family. Love the life, the culture. Now I'm Uncle Jim to everyone, loved, respected, cared for, rent free accom. Just got retirement visa - one year. Couldn't ask to be in a better place than with my adoptive Thai family. Humble, polite, good manners but with a good sense of humour for life's absurdities is all you need.

I think those who were blessed to arrive before the internet boom (2012) and a few other things 🤐, we were/are lucky enough to see what changed drastically after those times.
I was stationed there in 1969 for 18 months and lived at the king hotel. I was impressed with how little crime there was. We were out and about it all hours and never had a problem. Also we had to bargain for everything which we came to enjoy
I can attest to that notion of "you can literally drinking yourself to death in Thailand" my dad did that. He retired to Thailand, have my brother and me and then died from it, leaving me and my brother with an inadequate mom whose have her own problem with alcohol and an abusive stepdad.
It took my a couple minutes to realize that you are joking. Nice. Thailand is great and easy going. For us foreigners with our passports, travelling is just a matter of paying the tickets and choosing a destination. Except for this Covid Crisis time which reminded us suddenly how privileged we are when there are no such travel restrictions. The people in Asia cannot travel easy even without Virus crisis. In fact this is a serious inequality and the so much praised "fair trade" doesn't exist for tourism except for us foreigners. This should be brought to the attention of the UN sooner or later.

I considered Vietnam but went with my first choice when I sold up in California. I'm happily in the Mediterranean since 2007. I would choose Vietnam over Thailand simply because I spent much more time there and have friends there. But I knew Europe would likely win out. I've no regrets but would like to visit again.
@@Lea-rb9nc Thats very interesting to me, that the med in Europe was your choice over Asia. I've had the same dilema, I love them both in equal amounts, yet for different reasons.

I visited Thailand in 2011 and I miss it so much. I need to find something I can do online so I can move there. There are times here in Salt Lake City when the weather and atmosphere is just right to where it will remind me of being in Thailand.

I once made the mistake of raising my voice while in a public place with my Thai girlfriend. As I watched her leave, and I looked around the bank I realized that everyone had turned to silent statues who refused to make eye contact or acknowledge the presence of the out of control falang. I have changed, I love Thailand.

Very good, I once was on the bkk train- chai mai , I jumped off half way at phitsanulok , it was amazing the street vendors, the evening bars along river , the girls selling egg custard desserts in morning! Truly a different experience
Phitsanuloke is a big city located at the bottom part of northern Thailand. It is not on the tourist map yet. Your impromptu hopping in Phitsanuloke was a real taking the road less travelled.
Following based on my experience - and yes it is a generalisation so please take it as that : I have been retired in Thailand for 5years but lived in Asia for 22 years.. Generally ex Asia working expats seem very positive and accepting and appreciative of the way of life here. Those who have not spent time in Asia before moving to Thailand often present themselves as either very negative or critical or entitled (and sometimes bitter) and often complaining - but perhaps that has nothing to do with Thailand and just the type of people they are regardless where they live. As stated - based on my experience!!
First time for me,really enjoyed your philosophy on life & your laid back style. I retired here 9 years ago & im very happy living in Pattaya with my Thai partner. We swim in the pool every day couldn't cope with the heat like you . Totally different lifestyle but it's great for me also.

You hit the nail on the head. Was last in Thailand in 2012 and have been urging to get back ever since. Was waiting for the Smart VISA but then that didn't cover digital nomads and I wanted to do things legally. Might still just sign up for an education visa and sign up for a language course, I believe that is an option. Awaiting chance to discuss with Thai embassy ref recent announcements about Digital Nomad visa and those arrangements. And yes, being able to see Thailand through your channel is a chance to live vicariously through you and also maintain contact with Thailand. Phuket is my intended destination. Hoping to get there very soon, and for long term.

I've seen many videos that tell you how to live "Long time" in Thailand, but its temporary and really sounds like a royal pain doing border runs and/or filing documents every year which they give you a hard time about etc. You have been there 13 years and clearly you're not old enough for a retirement visa. This is inspiring to me. Do you have a video or can you make one on how easy it is to move permanently to Thailand for those of us who wish to do so and not feel rushed into a finding someone for a marriage visa?

For most people it would be very unsettling not knowing if immigration will issue your visa every year, especially when you have a family that depends on it. On the other hand, life does not issue guarantees on anything, which makes it even more important to live in the moment and deal with life as it unfolds.
Good tips. I've been to Thailand a few times. My wife is Thai and we plan to spend most of our time in Thailand. I've never been there in the hottest time of the year. So, we'll see. We had to skip going last year because of Covid, hoping to be able to come back in Jan with no quarantine. Retiring Nov 23. I'm prepared for the life style, just unsure of the heat. But I can do it. If you want to acclimatise avoid air conditioned venues. My experience suggests it takes a week to get used to the heat. A lot of westerners dash from one air conditioned venue to another; very limiting and they miss so much

Very true comments, spot on, I would put a slight spin on the “laid back culture” it may be fine for “tomorrow-tomorrow” when you need a bathroom extension built, great, fine. however when your new sink has a 15 degree tilt on it and everyone thinks it’s normal ‘that’s’ not laid back culture, it’s a persistent puddle ! I’ve lived there 4 times for extended periods. My last 3 times I stayed mostly on Koh Samui. Heaven on earth. I got depressed every time I came back to the US. I can’t wait until I can come again! 🥰🥰🥰 ty I really enjoyed seeing this. Best food in the world, the freshest!

First time I've seen any of your videos. Quite agree with your assessments. Except the lack of air conditioning, but that's just an electrical appliance. To live in Thailand, I would want to be near the sea and keep cool that way. Another option for me would be to go up north, where there is a winter of sorts. I was once walking around Chiang Rai in shorts and T-shirt while the locals were donning big coats because it was freezing! (Not real freezing, Thai freezing, below 20 degrees.)
Same here, me and my friend were in shorts and T-shirts while the Thai girlfriends had woolly hats, scarves, gloves and big coats. Mind you we were up Doi Inthanon in December where they regularly get frosts at night. Even so, I think the temperature at the time was around 12c. Seems anything below 20c is freezing to Thais. Having said that, once we were in Pai the temperature at night went as low as around 7c and that felt pretty chilly. Also, same as you, this is the first time I seen any of these videos - I've been binge watching Paddy Doyle's videos and missing Thailand very much. We have a house in Thailand but cannot get back there for a while yet.

Aged 21years I worked as an electrician in the very poor North East of Thailand. It was just perfect. After one year I climbed into the RAF Argosy and flew away to Singapore. My tears flowed.

While I think it is imperative to look at the positive aspects of Thailand and living in it (or any place for that matter), I believe it is equally as shortsighted to see it all through rose colored and pretend that everything here in worthy of adoration. Like every place in the world, there are indeed aspects of Thailand that aren't so good, but in general its true, its best to focus on the good parts..Not every complaint or criticism of the country is invalid, nor do people deserve to be ostracized for pointing out its faults, or told to "go home if you don't like it"...I think if you've lived here, spend time, worked, married, had kids here etc, you are perfectly entitled to express your opinions, even if they may not always be perfectly optimistic...f you truly love something, you will see if for all of what it is, good and bad..cockeyed optimism can be just as bad as perpetual pessimism..
I do love the markets in Thailand, I love watching the "us and we" mentality. Everything here in the states is "I and me". The biggest thing I love about Thailand is the thread that everyone and everything is just more connected. People need one another to survive. We visited Thailand in May 2016. The weather was great and Thai people are great. . We went everywhere including many islands. I must say we stayed in the back of the island Koh Pha ngan for 3 days in a small village and it was the best time in our lives. That will always be in my heart.
I live at Koh Chang, best decision in my life :-) even it was not easy to move from germany after divorce, 3 kids, house, depression etc. !
Germany may well be my second favourite country after Thailand..so your comments are a strong endorsement ❤❤❤ be well😊

I visited Thailand once in 2010 and liked very much the people and how they are with each other. They are very friendly and the climate is hot as you say.

My Thai wife and I are looking to retire in Thailand for a slower pace of life away from the rat race. We have flights finally booked for the end of February. That’s an honest video. My wife and I both enjoyed Thailand and its people. She has told me several times she would be happy to live there. She is Filipino and other than the language and culture Thailand felt very much like home to her. In fact everyone thought she was Thai until she spoke! Hahaha.
I grew up in Nevada so for me Thailand is an exotic vacation for me. I enjoy it but sometimes things drive me nuts. Also not speaking the language for me make it hard to truly know people the way I would like.
We will hopefully get to visit there again a few more times before I’m unable to travel easily. We both enjoyed our time there and the food was so good. I actually lost weight there. Mostly because we walked so much. Now my ability to walk is more limited so Tuk Tuk will be our friend.
The little girl is always calm in every video she's in! Always at peace!
As someone who's been 40+ years in Thailand, albeit living in the city, I think your attitude is spot on. Never mind about accumulating "stuff." All the best for the future with your wonderful family. Disregard the wingers and naysayers.

Not according to the Thai government , I am and have been specifically referred to as a non-immigrant, passport stamped and all. thanks
Its nothing to do with color of skin, why would it? Its simply this, the Thai government stamp a non-immigrant visa in my passport, I would love to be an immigrant but they do not allow it. Usually an immigrant can become a citizen, have access to public funds and work. I cannot according to Thai law, which is why they classify me categorically as a non-immigrant. Thanks
Yes note the key word "PERMANENTLY". There is nothing permanent about my visa. A residency permit allows for permanent stay, difficult to acquire. I don't think I can explain it for you any clearer. So all the best.

That’s a good point about drinking - it’s so easy to end up drinking all day, and all evening, until you realise you haven’t had an alcohol-free day in months. If you get into this rut, the health starts to go downhill. I know quite a few falang who have died from alcoholism in Thailand - only in their 40s.

Having lived in Thailand for over fifty years it would/is impossible to imagine having to return to the United States. The thought,to me,is as foreign as having to live on Mars. Yes, Thailand has gone, for me, far far past "I Love Thailand". It
is truly a part of me. I've rebuilt Khmer ruins, and worked as Design Manager for a large furnituyre company for 35 years and I was adopted 51 years ago so yes, I have the Thai Government Social Security Medical Program. My home is Buriram/Surin.

You've totally got it. Just retired here from UK on Koh Chang. but lived in BKK for 5 years in 80's. Lived in slum with Thai family. Love the life, the culture. Now I'm Uncle Jim to everyone, loved, respected, cared for, rent free accom. Just got retirement visa - one year. Couldn't ask to be in a better place than with my adoptive Thai family. Humble, polite, good manners but with a good sense of humour for life's absurdities is all you need.

I think those who were blessed to arrive before the internet boom (2012) and a few other things 🤐, we were/are lucky enough to see what changed drastically after those times.
I was stationed there in 1969 for 18 months and lived at the king hotel. I was impressed with how little crime there was. We were out and about it all hours and never had a problem. Also we had to bargain for everything which we came to enjoy

I can attest to that notion of "you can literally drinking yourself to death in Thailand" my dad did that. He retired to Thailand, have my brother and me and then died from it, leaving me and my brother with an inadequate mom whose have her own problem with alcohol and an abusive stepdad.

It took my a couple minutes to realize that you are joking. Nice. Thailand is great and easy going. For us foreigners with our passports, travelling is just a matter of paying the tickets and choosing a destination. Except for this Covid Crisis time which reminded us suddenly how privileged we are when there are no such travel restrictions. The people in Asia cannot travel easy even without Virus crisis. In fact this is a serious inequality and the so much praised "fair trade" doesn't exist for tourism except for us foreigners. This should be brought to the attention of the UN sooner or later.

I considered Vietnam but went with my first choice when I sold up in California. I'm happily in the Mediterranean since 2007. I would choose Vietnam over Thailand simply because I spent much more time there and have friends there. But I knew Europe would likely win out. I've no regrets but would like to visit again.

I am leaving New York tomorrow to join you in Thailand! Your understanding of the way of the Thai is impressive. I once made the mistake of raising my voice while in a public place with my Thai girlfriend. As I watched her leave, and I looked around the bank I realized that everyone had turned to silent statues who refused to make eye contact or acknowledge the presence of the out of control falang. I have changed, I love Thailand.
Behind doors, raise your voice sometimes. . Never let her think she's totally tamed you. It's a turnoff.

Very good, I once was on the bkk train- chai mai , I jumped off half way at phitsanulok , it was amazing the street vendors, the evening bars along river , the girls selling egg custard desserts in morning! Truly a different experience
Phitsanuloke is a big city located at the bottom part of northern Thailand. It is not on the tourist map yet. Your impromptu hopping in Phitsanuloke was a real taking the road less travelled.
Following based on my experience - and yes it is a generalisation so please take it as that : I have been retired in Thailand for 5years but lived in Asia for 22 years.. Generally ex Asia working expats seem very positive and accepting and appreciative of the way of life here. Those who have not spent time in Asia before moving to Thailand often present themselves as either very negative or critical or entitled (and sometimes bitter) and often complaining - but perhaps that has nothing to do with Thailand and just the type of people they are regardless where they live. As stated - based on my experience!!

You hit the nail on the head. Was last in Thailand in 2012 and have been urging to get back ever since. Was waiting for the Smart VISA but then that didn't cover digital nomads and I wanted to do things legally. Might still just sign up for an education visa and sign up for a language course, I believe that is an option. Awaiting chance to discuss with Thai embassy ref recent announcements about Digital Nomad visa and those arrangements. And yes, being able to see Thailand through your channel is a chance to live vicariously through you and also maintain contact with Thailand.
Phuket is my intended destination. Hoping to get there very soon, and for long term.

Great video. I've seen many videos that tell you how to live "Long time" in Thailand, but its temporary and really sounds like a royal pain doing border runs and/or filing documents every year which they give you a hard time about etc.
You have been there 13 years and clearly you're not old enough for a retirement visa. This is inspiring to me. Do you have a video or can you make one on how easy it is to move permanently to Thailand for those of us who wish to do so and not feel rushed into a finding someone for a marriage visa?

For most people it would be very unsettling not knowing if immigration will issue your visa every year, especially when you have a family that depends on it. On the other hand, life does not issue guarantees on anything, which makes it even more important to live in the moment and deal with life as it unfolds.

Good tips. I've been to Thailand a few times. My wife is Thai and we plan to spend most of our time in Thailand. I've never been there in the hottest time of the year. So, we'll see. We had to skip going last year because of Covid, hoping to be able to come back in Jan with no quarantine. Retiring Nov 23. I'm prepared for the life style, just unsure of the heat. But I can do it. If you want to acclimatise avoid air conditioned venues. My experience suggests it takes a week to get used to the heat. A lot of westerners dash from one air conditioned venue to another; very limiting and they miss so much

Very true comments, spot on, I would put a slight spin on the “laid back culture” it may be fine for “tomorrow-tomorrow” when you need a bathroom extension built, great, fine. however when your new sink has a 15 degree tilt on it and everyone thinks it’s normal ‘that’s’ not laid back culture, it’s a persistent puddle ! I’ve lived there 4 times for extended periods. My last 3 times I stayed mostly on Koh Samui. Heaven on earth. I got depressed every time I came back to the US. I can’t wait until I can come again! 🥰🥰🥰 ty I really enjoyed seeing this. Best food in the world, the freshest!

First time I've seen any of your videos. Quite agree with your assessments. Except the lack of air conditioning, but that's just an electrical appliance. To live in Thailand, I would want to be near the sea and keep cool that way. Another option for me would be to go up north, where there is a winter of sorts. I was once walking around Chiang Rai in shorts and T-shirt while the locals were donning big coats because it was freezing! (Not real freezing, Thai freezing, below 20 degrees.)

Same here, me and my friend were in shorts and T-shirts while the Thai girlfriends had woolly hats, scarves, gloves and big coats. Mind you we were up Doi Inthanon in December where they regularly get frosts at night. Even so, I think the temperature at the time was around 12c. Seems anything below 20c is freezing to Thais. Having said that, once we were in Pai the temperature at night went as low as around 7c and that felt pretty chilly. Also, same as you, this is the first time I seen any of these videos - I've been binge watching Paddy Doyle's videos and missing Thailand very much. We have a house in Thailand but cannot get back there for a while yet.
