GREAT ADVICE!! When I applied to Oxford in Y13, I came in the bottom 10% of the admissions test and unsurprisingly got rejected. But second time round, after working like crazy on the admissions test during my gap year, I got a place. The admissions test is BY FAR the most objective differentiator Oxford and Cambridge have: really really don’t underestimate it!!
Unfortunately even a good admissions test score doesn't always get you even an interview. I got 5% higher than the average offer holder and didn't even get an interview🤔. Anyone can always get a bit unlucky with the Oxford system as 2 colleges both have to like you 100% or you can get instantly rejected.

That's exactly what happened to me mate, screwed up the oxford PAT test for general engineering. Heading of to Imperial for civil engineering in October.
Pretty sure if you did a less competitive course at one of the most competitive unis in the world I think you would have deffo got in!😊😊 same goes for Unjaded jade when she got rejected from oxford!!!

I’m in y10 and I really want to achieve high and get top grades. Im trying to start revision early but even though I know about active recall, I’m not sure what *exactly* to do. What advice do you have when I’m predicted 8s for all subjects and I’m doing business, engineering, triple science, history and french, without knowing exactly how to revise?
@@ateamacad I feel it’s quite unlikely since he said that the interview went pretty well which is the biggest hurdle when applying to Oxbridge and the second is doing well in the admissions exams which didn’t go as planned for Jake. So if he were to take a gap year and work on those entrance exams, there shouldn’t be any reason why Cambridge would reject him. I mean this is just my opinion, Bath is a great university nevertheless.
@@Gareth. You'd be surprised each year the process varies. I'm saying this as I tend to help students going through the process and what works for someone one year may not necessarily work for someone the following. Jake will do well regardless of where he's at

I somehow managed to get an offer from Cambridge but for Classics, so for me the admissions assessment was an unseen Latin translation… definitely tricky and they didn’t ask for submitted work (since they do for essay subjects) and that honestly made me panic because translation is my weakest point but it went better than I expected, because you really have to cram for it. They don’t want to make it something that you could have seen before (for anyone in the comments applying for this or an essay subject where you really have to write) they don’t want it to be something you’ll be super practiced at. So you study Classical Latin, but my assessment was an obscure bit of Medieval Latin poetry. It wasn’t that different, but it wasn’t the sort I was used to, different style, different topics, they want to see how you handle that and how you think! Also exactly what he said for interviews! Show that you’re teachable! Be flexible with your thought and show that you’re enthusiastic to learn, not just to talk. If they ask a question and you get stuck, that’s good, it’s supposed to be hard! They want to see if you can take their help and comments and run with it, because that’s how it works there! Good luck everyone and congrats to everyone on ANY offers they get, you’re amazing! Congrats on Bath!!! Here’s to uni!!!
Jake I need some advice basically I tested positive for covid so I am gonna isolate for 2 weeks and I don't know how I am gonna cope with the work or catch up with the others I am doing bio maths chem and an EPQ.
Are all of the lessons online too? If not then email ahead and ask for the work/topics you will cover and use the revision guides to cover it. More than often working from home is more efficient anyway 🙃
Lots of very clever people who would do very well there don't get into Oxbridge, they can't offer a place to every good candidate, the admissions tests are what set people apart
Because that’s how assessments are done. If you were on a driving test and made a critical error would you expected the examiner to say “let’s not bother with the test you have already failed”!!

For me interviews do not require any high level knowledge, I don’t think I even needed any a level maths knowledge, the questions test how you think not what you know.
I got Maths- 8 Persian-8 Biology- 6 Chemistry- 8 Physics- 8 Geography- 7 Classical Greek- 7 English Language- 6 English Literature- 4 AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths- 6 PE- 6 (I would have appealed for that one as I should have got a 7/8 but I did not because my GCSEs were good enough for my next steps and there were people out there who needed to appeal more than me) Are these results good enough for Oxbridge (I hope to apply for Cambridge)
Honestly it’s entirely dependant on the rest of your application and your predicted alevel grades in particular! The predicted are more important than your GCSEs
I heard Cambridge don’t allow you to work during term time. I’m still going to apply but there is no way I’ll afford it anyway as I’m part of the working class. I don’t know how that is allowed or even enforced

Hi Jake, I am in a bit of predicament as both bath and bristol are top unis for aerospace engineering but hearing from different people that bath is better but it's not a Russel group uni, however bristol is one but is ranked a bit lower. What do you think and does bath not being a russle group uni have an effect on my job applications in the future ?
Russel group unis barely mean anything nowadays. Bath is one of the best universities for its links with industry, placement opportunities and graduate prospects so dont let the fact that its not a russel put you off :)

@jakeclarke is 9 month enough to learn 5 subjects from scratch for gcse , also do I need to know everything in cgp books or just the specification and how do I finish these books quickly, should I not worry about revising turn all the notes into flash cards over a few months then revise or do both at the same time.
Id say its possible if you are a fast learner. Imo making flashcards or taking notes would just be a waste of time which your already short on. It would be best to just use the cpg textbooks alongside youtube videos and websites like seneca

This might be too personal but what college did u go to? Because certain colleges do give students better chances/opportunities, also what extra curricular activities did u do and to what extent
St Catz :) Also played county badminton, tennis, football, built my own clothing line, started this channel and worked at edtech companies part time. Those were the main things on my PS

It's not just a grades thing for Cambridge - interview/extra curricular activities are also taken into account
I don't think the Engineering admissions test is that hard its more time pressured , with enough practice you will be fine.

Its actually fairly cheap compared to uni in london or bath for example
Most of the accommodation is owned by the unis, so it's relatively cheap compared to renting a place to live anywhere in the south
