Doorwerth Castle | Experience medieval adventures...

In this video we visit Doorwerth Castle. Doorwerth Castle is a beautiful example of a moated castle, where the thick outer walls together with the water provide protection. The castle is located in an ideal location: easily defensible on a floodplain on the Rhine and strategically located on the old main road from Arnhem to Utrecht. A great place for toll collection.
Robberknight
The castle was first mentioned in 1260. The predatory practices of castle lord Berend van Dorenweerd were a thorn in the side of the Count of Gelre and the Bishop of Utrecht. The then wooden building was destroyed during a siege. The castle was then rebuilt by Berend's son Hendric. This time with monastery jokes, baked from local river clay.
Residential tower
The oldest part from 1280 was a hall castle (rectangular residential tower), on the site and with the size of the current east wing of the castle. The southern wing was built against the castle during the 14th century. At the beginning of the 15th century, Reinald van Homoet was lord of the castle. He had the outer bailey and the massive residential tower built on the north side. The last major expansion took place in the 16th century, with the enlargement of the south wing and the construction of the tower in the southwest.
Medieval
The castle's subsequent owners rarely stayed there. That is why they did not have the tendency to modernize and that is probably the reason that Doorwerth still has a medieval appearance. The castle's darkest days are more recent. During the liberation of the South of the Netherlands in September 1944, the castle came under heavy fire.
Rebuild
After the war, little was left but a sad mess. It took 37 years to rebuild the castle to its former glory. Since 1983, the castle can be admired again in its medieval glory. Doorwerth Castle is therefore one of the most beautiful castles in the Netherlands.
