I agree, I'm a huge fan of the show and got to see it on Saturday and thought everything about it was good, except for Adam playing Huey. As stated in this before he's an amazing singer, but does not deliver a believable, funny Huey. This being said, Chad did such an amazing job at Huey, no one will ever be able to live up to him.
Yeah, I saw the Memphis tour last night. Bryan Fenkart was fantastic. And he didn't try too hard to imitate Chad, either--he was true to the character and true to himself at the same time. Not to mention his great vocals (possibly not as good as Chad or Adam, but whatever). And Felicia Boswell was almost equally terrific (I think she over-riffed a little, though).
@LisD17 He is amazing and the original Huey......That said.....should the show be cancelled and never played again by any other actor when Chad moves on? I think not.
Nope, but thank you! I am a major fan of the show, and I myself am a theater artist (director/writer/teacher) and I know when an actor is working and when s/he is just making a paycheck. I understand the commercial reasons behind hiring Adam-- he comes with an audience. I get it. Maybe it is his contribution that is keeping the show running, and maybe it is because people love the DVD (with CHAD), but his performance is two-dimensional and uninspired. The magic has left the building.
I wouldn't go that far... The show is still very good, Adam aside. But much of the magic has been lost. Adams not really an actor. I kinda wanna see the tour guy. He seemed like a decent blend between Adams voice and Chads acting. At least that's what I can tell from the videos of him.
Of course not, but having seen four actors portray Huey now, I'd say that none of them work harder than Chad at getting inside of the character. Adam's acting is, I'm sorry to say, lazy. Either he's not trying or he's not capable of finding something real in himself that makes Huey come alive for the audience. All of the laughs are lost, because Adam 'doesn't play humor.' Sorry, but... this isn't 'Rent' or 'Aida'. There's humor. It's your job to play it. Good vocals are not enough, sorry.
