      Stay away from trees in the water (a.k.a strainers) that one of the most effective ways of drowning on the river. It's also something that the river leaders/coaches that were on the trip with you should have emphasised and, frankly, I think it was a little irresponsible of them to put a bunch of inexperienced paddlers in situations where they were going to be in close proximity to so many strainers.

      I know this is quite old now but i am replying mostly for other newbies, just this last year I have started WW at my local artificial centre (Lee Valley in the UK). The best advice that I can give whilst youre learning is to record it all, I found that when i went through my footage to edit it to put on YT, I could see where I was going wrong, and believe it or not, the next session I actually improved right off the bat on where i was messing up on the previous session.

    Appreciate you showing your experience. Buying my first kayak

      I also just bought my first kayak and accidently came across this channel.
      I can't wait to get out into nature, but will stay on calm water to become familiar with my boat and build up some skills (rolling for example).
      Looking for a beginners weekend in my region right now...

    Very good my friend. I'm enjoying watching your recording while waiting to get my truck loaded. I remember going through many experiences like yours. 👍 Take care, and keep up the good work.

    Hello, and thank you for this video. It inspired me to sign up and go to my local whitewater beginner weekend. I completely understand the fear of the unknown mixed with a confidence that only makes me want to get back on the water and challenge myself. I already see the confidence of being capable of keeping upright in a tiny plastic boat bleeding into other aspects of my life. I would not have ventured into this area had you not shared your story. Thank you. I hope to see you on the water some day.

      The best GoPro tip out there! How much roll practice did you do prior to getting on the water? My big tip is just to learn to keep your body calm under water, and get a consistent roll in before going down a river. Greetings from Idaho!!

    Great video and I'm nearly at your stage of paddling, still nervous but loving it. Thanks for your honesty, I bet there's loads of us at this stage which gives us a certain amount of confidence to carry on. I have recently put a video up with my first whitewater trip and you can here the mild panic in my voice

    Great video. I recently started making kayaking videos on my UA-cam channel, filming some friends who are expert kayakers. Now I want to try it myself. It looks like so much fun. Maybe one day...

    I feel like there is nothing more terrifying for sea kayakers, than white water kayaking 😅 I've been on a beginners course in Garmisch, Germany, 2 years ago and I felt like I was dying 😂 After those 2 days I was green and blue all over my body, from all the rock I've bumped into :D

    Best advice is learn to roll and learn to brace. All it takes is your boat, paddle, and a swimming pool. With a teacher you could learn to roll in am hour, two tops. The best thing about it is, when you mess up your edges and flip, it doesnt take 45 minutes to try again. You just roll up and get back to work.

      Great advice! They are really important. Though I know it is taking me longer then an hour to learn how to roll 🤣

    • @connorcoultas9629
      @connorcoultas9629 4 роки тому +2

      @@PaddlinDutchman I mean it will take much longer than an hour to solidify your roll, but I have taught plenty of people to roll who have never been in a kayak before and from no roll to their first roll is usually an hour. Stay positive, stay safe, and have fun! You got this.

    Nice video, keep on practicing. I would second that working on bracing and rolling makes the practice more easy and fun. In my experience it is helpful if someone else starts to learn rolling aswell cause then you see that you are not dumb or anything if you cant do it after the 3rd try (as an example) and both of you will face similar challenges. And dont pressure yourself with "normally it takes x hours" or so, everyone is different and thats okay, if you keep practicing you will learn it no matter what. For rolling I really like the Glenmore lodge videos (ua-cam.com/video/YlgKotwHzSY/v-deo.html). But yeah it seems you have good paddle buddies who will explain everything step by step, just go out with them and have fun!

    The person leading you - should have taken you wider from the trees you hit. It is not all your fault.

      Thanks for the comment anyway, I guess... Luckily there are millions of other videos on UA-cam and many different creators who can do whatever they like 😁. But if you want to up your whitewater kayaking, go check out Seth Ashworth’s channel or River Kings!
