Black & White+ is the time when I stepped away from the cards and games until COVID and quarantine. Thanks for continuing the series, as I'm trying to wrap my head around all of the seemingly 'crazy' changes to the game, and how we made it to 300 hp Pokemon in recent sets. It's really nice to have these history lessons, as always!
Hard to believe it's already been so long i still remember seeing all the Mewtwo's on PTCGO. Next week we get to talk about *Your Pokemon, give it to me, now*.
Opening a full art Zekrom-EX was what convinced me to actually learn how to play the TCG. Not only that, but in retrospect this set seems almost like “the definitive point where the TCG changed” with how insane the spike EXs were in power. It felt like a much bigger step up in power than any premier mechanic following it like GXs or even Vs.
Funny story, one of my Japanese friends often called the Japanese paired sets that corresponded to ND "Hail Blizzard and X-Ball" instead of "Hail Blizzard and Physcho Drive". Good times.
Was playing during the time! Mewtwo EX was such a deciding card, our friends came together to have 8 to run 2 decks of pachirusu, shaymin, mewtwo EX. Went to a regional, donked countless players. Went undefeated in Swiss. It was a wild time to play the game
I’m very glad tha I still have a sealed booster box of this Next Destinies set! Thanks heaps Woosy for your most excellent presentation! It took me down to some very fond memories of going with my sons to league events at our local LGS. Good times!
Mewtwo EX's biggest problem in my opinion is because it used a double colorless energy and thus could be slotted into EVERY SINGLE DECK. And before the card got reprinted, you had to sell your first and second born children to get a playset of them. And the card really was everywhere and I hated it. It took the "big basic domination" that I was already disliking from the previous set to a whole new level. Big, unfairly expensive, basic Pokemon dominated like every deck. That fire type Chandulure was one of my favorite cards for a few weeks. I built a deck around it that I ran on PTCGO a lot. I used to to farm Tynanmo from Eletrik decks and other low HP support Pokemon. And I had a friend who played Darmanitan-Gardevior a good bit too. I played Level Ball and Heavy Ball so much! Just so good! Next week though, we're going to finally see the card that was my favorite deck of all time! And I do consider it very strongly *MY* deck because I had the list already made when the Japanese card scans hit the internet. While everyone was raving about Darkrai, I knew what I wanted to play, and it wasn't Darkrai!
have a comment for the algorithm! i remember going to a prerelease for this set when i was like 11 lol. these videos are so interesting and your personal stories from tournaments and events really make them special. thanks wossy for the brain food!
My REAL first set was HeartGold and SoulSilver, but I wasn't really hooked on the game. Year later there was Black & White, I was hooked on full-arts of Reshiram and Zekrom And Next Destinies was the set I became super hooked because of the EX cards and especially Mewtwo EX. Those cards shaped the way I play this game forever. Even now, 9 years later, I still to this day prefer to play big buff powerful basic Pokemon like Tag Team GX, basic GX and V cards, and I HATE to play even stage 1 pokemon, not to speak about stage 2 (but sometimes I forced to play stage 1 because Alolan Ninetales and Excadrill are great decks, Frosmoth is great support etc, and also because some very annoying players really like to block my basic Pokemon from attacking)
Hey I found this channel because this series was recommended to me and I've loved every video. BW is when I started playing and this cards really take me back. Now I watch all your uploads because this series wasn't enough. Can you please add the remaining videos of this series to the playlist? I remember the order these sets came out in, however when new people like me find this series, they might get lost. Thank you, keep doing what you're doing
You’re welcome, Wossy. I just wish I could find the deck box from Plasma Blast. I thought I had all of them, but things got jumbled up in my last move.
the fact that mewtwo ex was so much better than the other exes by a long shot, was so insanely splashable, AND was basically the best counter to itself bc dce x ball oneshot opposing mewtwo w/ dce was so stupid. granted i loved playing with the card but my god the power level was way too high
I actually quit for several months once thus set came out. At the prerelease I pulled garbage and everyone was talking about mewtwo and they were offering people 50 plus dollars for it and I didn't have the money to keep up at the time. I didn't get back in until just before plasma freeze came out so I ended up missing a lot of the mewtwo wars. It was still a big part of the meta then but not what it was upon release.
My biggest grievance with this set is that the EX's are too rare. You only get two regular EX's and one full art per box. The good thing about this set is that every EX is playable. Kyurem and Regigigas were insanely good in Truth EX decks. Decks relying on Mewtwo EX simply had no answer to Frozen Wings being spammed. Thanks for mentioning Plus Power as it was critical to stop your opponent revenge killing your Mewtwo by slapping a DCE on theirs the following turn.
Comment boost. I wasn't _actively_ playing much at this time, but I do remember bringing my pokemon cards to a con, excited to find some people to play with, and just getting utterly bodied in the hotel game room by countless Mewtwo and Darkrai EXs.
This will probably be infinitely more relevant whenever the Dragons EXalted episode releases but were Ray-Eels and Ray-boar actually as good as I remember them being as a kid or is that just nostalgia blinding me?
I think rayboar was pretty top tier, was my favorite at the time and I usually won quite a bit. Blastoise/keldeo/black kyurem was arguably the best version though
@@quickpik4121 Loved my RayBoar deck back in the day, shame most of it's been dissolved between my dad selling my "spare" rare cards behind my back a few years ago (basiaclly just my doubles of Rayquaza for the deck, a couple of promos, and all of my Gen 3/4 stuff, which wasn't spare) and the trainers and energies being dissolved back into my "bulk" stuff.
@@GoyBenius_0901 mine was sold several years back but just for old times sake a bought a FA Rayquaza EX from dragons exalted for a keepsake. Well.. I convinced my wife to buy it for me for Christmas hahaha
This was the era I started playing the TCG and I'm STILL not over Mewtwo EX
I saw Mewtwo EX in the thumbnail and immediately got PTSD.
Aw yes another Mew2waR veteran

This is where Big Basics dominate for 9 years. Evolution based decks are almost extinct!

This is the set that begun my Pokémon card journey! I’m so glad you’ve finally reached it.

I bought 2 booster boxes just to look for Mewtwo EX. Fast forward a few months later, and it ended up being a promo. Boy was I pissed.

I am so happy finding the channel again !
This is the first set where being a Stage 2 is too slow to be good as a deck
Nah not yet, greeninga break was a 2016/17 stage 3 deck that saw competitive success
You might see some Stage 1/2s due to some of their useful abilities.
You’re welcome, Wossy. I just wish I could find the deck box from Plasma Blast. I thought I had all of them, but things got jumbled up in my last move.

A lot of these cards are starting to look very familiar.

Mewtwo was the biggest thing in the whole game at the time. Everyone played it.
You almost just had to. Like he says in the video. The best counter to it, was itself.
@@heavyarms55 Yeah, and the fact that everyone used it almost exclusively for X Ball meant they could slap it into any deck they wanted.

everything changed when the mewtwo ex attacked
I have an next destinies not folded if someone wants that
Just a slight nitpick, but the "Kyu" in Kyurem is supposed to be pronounced the same way you say the letter Q.
nice
i had a busted deck with that mewtwo haha
I played metwo ex obnly during x and y times. Even there it was sooo good and then the mega...
That one was good but it was NOTHING compared to when this dropped :p
