  • More than 20 years ago Peter Wambugu an Apple farmer in Kenya, quit coffee farming for Apples and has since been successful in the practice.
Most of the apples we eat in Kenya are imported either from the Middle East or South Africa.
This is because exotic trees require a lot of work and are quite delicate.
Fresh and Fruity visited an Apple farmer to understand how he has managed to make it work in Kenya.

He has developed a breed of apples called Wambugu apples. It grows in Kenya. It is bigger and sweeter than the exotic apple from south Africa and middle east. His farm is in Nyeri, Kenya. He is just basically how he came up with the apple. The apples you see are in his farm.

@@florianbreitwieser6708 Yes. No chemicals used. Just animal manure, insect traps and inter cropping with pepper trees to repel insects. Ask the managers of the farm for more details. I am an interested future farmer of this breed

I live in a tropical marine country with lots of sunshine and rain. I already have three young apple trees grown from seed. Two of them have flowered. Is the Wambugu Apple suited for my climatic condition?

There is no indigenous apple trees in the Aberdare forest grown by the forefathers --Apples are not indigenous to Kenya --those trees that were left in that region were left by the European farmers from the 1950s and 60s who were forced to leave their farms and leave the country. Most of the fruit farms that were left by the Europeans were destroyed and cut down for firewood due to the hatred of their legacy and maize and beans were grown instead .

And your point is? Yes, apples are temperate fruits. but all over the world new varieties are bred for suitability for local conditions. The settlers were not forced to leave their lands - they left willingly and by choice when Africans achieved self-determination. They were either compensated by a scheme funded by the UK government and the lands made available to resettlement of African smallholders or sold their farms on a willing buyer -willing seller basis to local farmers. A few remained behind after assurance by the then prime minister Jomo Kenyatta.
Kenyans did not despise farming knowhow or technology, but objected to widespread incarceration, near enslavement and mistreatment in their own country. Those settlers who had a bad relations with Africans, found their "legacy" was better forgotten.

I think many people don't know the differents between seedlings and grafted trees. If you use seedlings fot apples it will be always a new variety. So buy grafted appletree. And use a variety like Rome Beauty or Anna. Only low chill apples will do in Africa.
