Hey Phil - Just wanted to share a bit of advice and insight on your health bill saga. I am a physician that works both in the ER and doing hospital medicine. First of all, I don't think it is a great plan to just avoid the situation. Ultimately, those hospitals will likely send those bills to collections agencies and things have the potential to turn very ugly. Even if they don't send to collections, they will report to credit reporting agencies. Second, it is an absolute travesty and oversight that your hospital stay(s) was classified as "outpatient" and that your insurer is not seeing this as emergency care. Accidents with far, far less severe mechanism and injuries are routinely classified as "trauma," and based on the injuries you described, I believe you clearly should have qualified as an inpatient. Additionally, if the initial hospital was unable to provide appropriate care, they should have transferred you to a facility that had the appropriate resources. I believe you opened yourself up to a bit of a conundrum by leaving one hospital and going to another, but ultimately you were just doing what you needed to do to get appropriate emergency care. The hospitals should clearly re-classify those stays as inpatient, and your insurer should clearly pay for appropriate emergency care. I really believe that the right lawyer with expertise in this area could sort this out for you, and I'd be willing to bet that the providers who cared for you would admit that they (or their billers) messed up in classifying your stays as "observation." I am sure you have ample resources and folks willing to help you and I am hardly an expert in this field, but if you want to discuss this via phone, I would be more than happy to do so. To be honest, I am amazed that it hasn't been sorted out already. Send me a message if you'd like to connect.

OMG! I'm so glad that I live in Germany because of our obligatory health insurance. I mean, as a bike rider you're always at the risk of crashing with severe injuries. Without health insurance coverage you suddenly have a bunch of debts you might not be able to pay back in a lifetime. I wish you all the best.

@@dustrod9244 Let me guess, you're one of the people that thinks people from Canada and Europe are flocking to the US to get 'better healthcare'. Oh right.... no one is doing that. If our healthcare was so good over here why don't other countries copy our methods? There are countries more wealthy, and less wealthy, than the US that have universal healthcare and no one in those countries look at what we have and think it's better. It's time for a change over here to provide our people with better healthcare and also education. The bs view of 'competition lowers prices' has never worked.

On the topic of covering issues outside of cycling and the pandemic. The lack of mainstream professional sports during the pandemic has enabled us to reckon with our issues without distraction. Hey, I think your stance is great. One of the important things about cycling for me is it connects you to your community better than most other hobbies/modes of transport. You cycle through your towns, your neighbourhoods, and your beautiful spaces, and it's impossible not to absorb some of that. It connects you to people. Cyclists are engines for change. We are not only turning cranks to escape our lives, we turn cranks to improve our lives and those of the people we share our space with. Less pollution, more equality, more compassion. Peace and pedals Phil, Peace and pedals. You do a great job blending all the things that make us cyclists, yes, but humans too. Also, your medical bill is bullshit!! The medical 'system' is just another thing that needs to change for everyone to be better off.

A year after I broke one bone I gained 10 pounds and lost 30 watts. You are a beast

Phil, I don’t mind you talking about politics sometimes, but also bring the bike crazy.

As to your insurance dilemma, wait for it to go to a collection agency. They buy big blocks of debt for pennies on the dollar, they hound you feverishly to collect it. After a few years make them an offer, say 25grand , they will come back with a counter, negotiate , agree then pay off the reduced amount.

any cyclist knows, when someone tells you to "stay in your lane" it's usually an asshole in a pickup truck, and while the safest response might be to cower close to the curb, the most satisfying is to sit in that car lane and let him fume at you

I'd say don't think too much about pleasing your viewers since obviously an overwhelming portion is very happy with your content considering the like/dislike ratios. So as you said, you might not have the biggest subscriber count due to not being that flashy or expressing opinions once in a while, but the ones that do watch your stuff are glad about it.
