  • How to do an oil painting. How to paint en plein air like the masters! In this video I paint a rural scene using some of the techniques described by landscape painter, John F. Carlson. I explain some instruction from his book, Carlson's Guide to Landscape Painting, and use some of his techniques to paint a landscape with an old barn.

It would be interesting to end the vids in the studio under controlled light so the actual colors and values become apparent. I like the painting and would love to see it on a wall.

Carlson's book reads about values...group values, no more than 3-4 and never go over 8 in a landscape, 8 being darkest.
Your values...colors are way too dark...sky too blue, remember Carlson talks about making the sky too blue. A suggestion, use oils...premix your colors...get a view finder....and use a string attach to box or a ruler....acrylic paints are very difficult many don't get this to master colors because they dry darker...so you must always mix a 2 values under ..at times 1...thinking of when it dries. Acrylic paints really will take the beginners many years to master color....plein air using oils you can save time mixing, by pre mixing and then spen time using the view finder to create a balanced harmonious composition and need to get the "size" of buildings to fit the size of canvas. Stephan can explain this to you, there's calculations to use and a tool. Also, just a view finder if one understands the "concept " of how to use it...what to look for and how to measure your horizon and such.

Wow, 1:06:08 that's way too dark. Values too too dark. Especially for a plein air. Remember acrylic dries 2 values darker then what you mix and first apply when wet.
