Yes, avr have to many mode to play music in different stages, like stereo, all stereo, pro logic, dolby etc

Avc means audio video controller (pre amplifier)
And avr means audio video receiver (its have both pre and power section).
you are not correct, good AVR like marantz, pioneer has better DAC and can have great sound quality than most stereo receivers
