Mindblowing to see the Depths that low. They have some of the best level design in the game, very nonlinear and interconnected, and the atmosphere is exactly what such an area should feel like. If you go without the master key you're challenged to find your way to the bonfire instead of just being given one as a freebie. There's plenty of enemy variety between hollows, the butcher, slimes, rats, basilisks, channeler and the giant rat.
I guess it must all be due to curse-related PTSD.

The reason why the depths really gave me Game Cancer was because I forgot that Dark Souls had that curse mechanic that halves your health, so I was incompetent to buy a purging stone, and when I did get cursed, I as ready to fucking shoot myself, because I had backtrack ALL THE FUCKING WAY back to that god damn overconfident shit weed of a character who contributes jack shit to the story.

Not gonna lie I like Tomb of the Giants, if for no other reason than the atmosphere and enemies. Slowly walking through the darkness just to see one of those skeleton dogs peak into the light, just standing there, breathing, was probably one of the the spookiest moments in the entire game and something I'll never forget.

  • @Grimscribe732
    @Grimscribe732 6 років тому +2

Honestly areas like Blighttown, Tomb of the Giants and New Londo Ruins are awesome. They really fit the setting, lore and place they are in the map. If you go deep down in the earth, you'd hardly expect there to be light. If you go into a down below the sewers, well... you'd pretty much expect it to look like Blighttown. New Londo Ruins was just haunting and the atmosphere so eerie, it really felt like a dead place - the lack of bonfires was annoying, sure, but it also fit the whole "dead place" lore so I can't really complain about that either.
The only two areas I really am not so fond of are Lost Izalith, which is just a total mess (how did anyone seriously vote for that as "best area"?), and the Demon Ruins, which are not even that bad and just feel unfinished and have some lacking boss fights. That really speaks to the overall quality of the world in DS1.

For Dark Souls 2 Areas: The best for me was Frozen Elyum Loyce, absolutely beautiful scenary and enemies with amazing atmosphere that takes you inside the game to experience every single bit of stress and emotion. Worst area, although i struggled in shrine of amana, but it wasnt as bad as the gutter. A reskinned blighttown with shittier enemies and easier to get lost. Undead Parish is actually one of my favourite areas, primarily because of the church itself. There's something very affecting about fighting your way through an unassuming, innocent church. I'm pretty sure it's 90% of the reason I find empty churches and castles really atmospheric, and I often find myself thinking "Damn, this place could be a Dark Souls area."

3:20 The first time I ever got to this area I was in way more trouble than you would think because of one simple little problem I couldn’t figure out how to get the lantern to work.
And while you’d think that that doesn’t make any sense and that it’s extremely easy keep in mind that I kept equipping it to my weapon arm and for some reason it only lights up in your shield hand.
So we spent a very long time and they’re slowly inching my way through their straining my eyes on the screen trying to find those blowing eyes so I do have a shot at not getting creamed.

"Without further ado, let's jump in with Blighttown." Hah, nice one!
I don't even remember how I voted by now, but I am pretty sure I rated Lost Izalith as the worst, but not even that area rated a 1/10. To be honest, Lost Izalith DOES have some content that makes it memorable for good reasons, namely the climaxes of Siegmeyer and Solaire's tragic stories and the final battle with Kirk. Likewise, I was surprised the Depths rated as low as it did, because I actually spent quite a lot of time down there (usually farming Large/Green Titanite Shards from the Slimes outside the bonfire room with Chaos Firestorm), but on reflection it IS boring, irritating (you mentioned the rats, dogs, slimes and torch hollows but COMPLETELY forgot the BASILISKS!) and doesn't really serve any purpose- at least Blighttown serves as the greatest test of your resolve to that point and the area where the game just comes clean and tells you "I hate you and I want you to die". Also, aside from rescuing Laurentius and meeting Domnhall there's NOTHING of any story relevance down there, it's just a transitional area. I do love the boss, though.

There are a lot of optional bosses in SoulsBorne series as you know, especially in Bloodborne so I think it'd be pretty cool if you made a list ranking them either based on like their difficulty, coolness, or whether you should skip fighting them or not. You've probably already thought about this idea but if not you could save this theme for down the road, I look forward to more of your videos and can't wait to see what you have in store for us next. Hot take time, I'm a big fan of both the depths and Blighttown, The Depths has a great design, using its tight narrow turns to throw little jump scares that can kill you if you don't gather your barrings, the items are really good, the Basalisks sucks, but you only have to take them on when you fail a jump. And Blighttown has incredible design, a rickety, thrown together, DIY, hodge podge town with her only residents being the disgusting creatures left to rot and fester there, plus some good items, NPC's, Mildred, and a useful skip for speed runs or those who actuallyhate it. Plus both have great bosses.

New Londo is hella underrated. Legitimately great level design, cool shortcuts (both intended and unintended) and the atmosphere is off the charts. It's easily the spookiest and unnerving area of Dark Souls, more so than TOTG or Blighttown even. That second section with the Darkwraiths is fantastic and extremely tense. I get that the ghosts are annoying, but with a little bit of patience, dealing with them doesn't have to be the worst thing in the world.

In defense of the Depths, it is a good place, especially early on, to both grind and farm Humanity Sprites and Eyes of Death for Nito's Gravelord Covenant!
I'm also now going to defend the Demon Ruins: If you missed out on the Taurus' or Capra's Boss Weapons first time around it is a good place to nab them! Also: Sunlight Medals!
Other than that, I agree pretty solidly! I died once to one of those dinosaur things in Lost Izalith and when I went back could not see my drop at all, not even after turning Brightness down! Plus it was a while after I first finally beat the Bed of Chaos that I learned about that hidden Bonfire! Yeah! Fun times!

Blighttown actually looks quite beautiful when you can see the surroundings and New Londo looks absolutely stunning and ominous. Getting cursed had to do with those frog-looking enemies in the lower part of the depths. The curse itself happens when you stand in the mist they spray for too long and your character is instantly petrified.
Personally I was indifferent to the depths when I went through them. I found myself going in circles at certain moments which was frustrating, but for the most part the enemies weren’t too tough and exploring was enjoyable.

Now I can breeze my way through Sen’s Fortress and even make O&S my biotch(sorta.....when they aren’t pounding my face in). Least favorite parts of the game......Tomb of the Giants( 💀🔦 😱). Four Kings(It’s just so boring....I’d rather play chess simulator where I have to checkmate 4kings). I’d have said bed of chaos but I’ve actually gotten pretty used to it at this point and can usually beat it in 1-3 tries(still bs tho). This is just my opinion (I wonder what everyone else’s favorite and least favorite places and bosses are?)

Geez, when I heard about New Londo ruins, I was half expecting a town full of burning buildings, kind of like a combination of oolacile township and old yharnam. Even when I learned that the people of New Londo were drowned, therefore it wouldn't make sense for the town to be on fire, I thought it nonetheless.

I made the mistake of playing Dark Souls 3 first, so none of these areas are really a favorite. All these environments pale in comparison. Anor Londo is definitely cool, and I love that it’s in Dark Souls 3, as well.
New Londo Ruins, The Catacombs, and Zen’s Fortress stand out the most to me, since they felt the most like exploring dungeons, and you had to work toward being able to explore them.
Returning to Firelink Shrine after completing major milestones is the most memorable aspect of the game for me. That hauntingly beautiful music is a nice reprieve from the rest of the game.

I rather like the terrifying areas like the tomb and Blighttown and the Depths.
The only thing I don't like is bland stuff. Forest is pretty boring, same with the hell stuff (and I never really understood why demons figure into the game). Anor Londo and the Archives are pretty dull too.
But I definitely don't know that I would rate the tomb, Blighttown, and Depths over all of the ones I didn't mention, most of which were great.

    Thoughts
Lost Izalith - Not hard, just speedrun through. Bed of Chaos is easy enough to do in 2-3 tries.
Depths - Pretty meh to be honest. Just slimes that can be avoided, and a meh boss. The true pain were the basilisks, but they can be avoided.
Demon Ruins - yeah, pretty bad. A reskin boss and Ceaseless discharge. Centipede was a bit of a hassle. To be honest though, I like fighting Capras without dogs.
Tomb of giants - Pretty easy to get the sunlight maggot, which makes it infinitely easier. I do feel it's a bit too long, but as you said you can speed run. The dogs always are a bit of trouble, but shields work. I always run through the part with the baby skeletons. Not a bad boss though.
Blighttown - Alright, once again, a bit too long, though you can get through the first part pretty easily. Second part is annoying, but there is the rusted iron ring, and the spider shield for poison. Also moss. A lot you can do to counteract the area's main annoyance. Also, the boss is quite easy.
Catacombs - yeah, quite easy. I never did just skip it, but you can run through, two shot the mage and then just kite the skeletons. The boss is also a joke, like you said.
Basin - Yeah, like you said. Hey, some area with some golems and a hydra. It's tiny, and just meh. Hydra did piss me off first time around cause I moved like a snail and got destroyed by projectiles. You do get the grass crest shield though. I also got my first dark knight weapon, the halberd which was sweet.
New Londo - Surprised me too. Eventually, I bought 43 transcient curses and obliterated them, but it annoys me how they can hide in walls, and have such good range. I do love darkwraiths though. I dislike how you are forced to waste a ring slot on the boss fight, which made me fat roll.
Undead Asylum - Lackluster. It was a decent tutorial, and I learnt the basics, but no real challenge to test them on. The boss seems crushingly hard, but when you can drop attack him and whack him a few times, he's more like a teddy bear. When you return, it's just more hollows and a reskin. On thing I did like was you fighting the knight that went insane eventually. Oscar, I think it was.
Duke's Archives - I quite like it. I got lost as well, but I didn't mind fighting off the cool enemies (except the mages, screw those guys). It gave the feeling of how large the archives were. Also, Seath's first impression was pretty cool. I found Sieglinde and I was hurt it wasn't my bro Siegmeyer. I do dislike he invisible paths though, as it's hard to figure out by yourself without going on the internet.
Oolacile Sanctuary - Meh. I never really categorised it as an area. Your pulled into a forest like place, light a bonfire and then fight a boss. Just no real substance. I found the mushroom lady stupid. Boss was cool though, being a mythical creature and all, with lightning attacks.
Garden - I never really got any pvp activity, due to me joining in on the game late. The some I did have was boring as it was full or lag and tryhards. I liked the potential for souls farming, but I always viewed the place as a utility and not an actual area. When I needed the ring, I would speedrun through, kill boss, and homeward bone out.
Undead Burg - The enemies were mostly meh in the most part, and not really interesting. Things I did enjoy was meeting Andre, fighting the metal boar, and fighting the titanite demon near Andre. Bell Gargoyle were also pretty cool for a fight, but easy with Solaire and maybe Lautrec

I actually enjoyed the demon ruins. Yeah the reskins are lazy but since I used a bow to lure the enemies away from their groups I was able to avoid ganks. It basically came down to a combat dungeon for me where I got to refight some bosses. If anything that area taught me that the Capra demon is actually fun to fight when the arena isn't garbage and he doesn't have pet dogs around.

I'm kind of mad New Londo didn't make it to the bottom five.
The ghosts themselves were a terrible design choice. Just think about it:
    * An enemy that's invincible unless you use a certain (temporary) item, or are cursed (but the undead curse doesn't count!)
    * They can fly
    * They can move through walls
    * They can attack through walls
    * They gank you in choke points needed to progress
    * They can change their elevation to reach you wherever you are
    * They have a grab attack that ignores shields
    * They attack with considerable range
Bad, bad enemy, that makes up like 70% of the area, and then its Darkwraith gank time so... yeah.
Without frame rate issues Blighttown isn't that bad.

  • @Vikt0rian

To be honest, my personal least favourite/most hated is Crystal Cave that shit place has so many random drops on their invisible platforms and until you realize that you can "hit" the ground with ranged objects (whether stones, or arrows or some such), it is just a nightmare, and the enemies are big bulky fuckers that you need to kite normally instead of things that will get staggered... I fucking hated it... That said, the Duke's archive wasn't that bad, it was confusing, but not awful like Blighttown or The Great Hollow.

Not surprising areas like Tomb of the Giants and New Londo would be hanging down at the bottom with Blighttown and Izalith. My least favorite areas of Souls games are almost always the "gimmick" areas where the level forces you to play in a certain way in order to cope with some environmental nonsense (goop that slows movement, poison, lava damage, platforming with deathfalls everywhere, darkness killing vision, stuff like that). Unless it's Smouldering Lake in DSIII which somehow manages to mix that (&$#$@&&# triple-ballista! Hall full of flame orbs! Lava pits!) with gank squads of Ghru and simultaneously being completely effing _boring_ on top of it.
Be interesting to see if Frozen Outskirts, Shrine of Amana, or Black Gulch ends up dead worst in DSII.
