"This game respects your time." is something I've been saying since the demo. The tons of quality-of-life improvements completely change how you approach this game. Gotta hand to Gemdrops for truly creating a fantastic remake. I don't think the game is perfect, but it sure can set a new standard for JRPG remakes, or rather, JRPGs in general. This game definitely improves everything the original did right.
I think the biggest issue is that you can level up too fast. Even if you ignore Item Creation altogether, the buckets of EXP stack with each other and you often find yourself overleveled. I actively AVOIDED fights on my second fresh playthrough because I accidentally overleveled myself by just playing the game normally, and that felt terrible because combat is so addicting in this game, more than in the original. I was at level 30 by the time I reached the Forest of Symbols and I didn't even stop to grind, just fighting everything I'd see. I really wish they added a new difficulty above Universe, maybe one to unlock for New Game+.
You're right. I found the original soundtrack superior to the arrangement. I hope Til The End of Time remake is made by Gemdrops like this one is. This game is just awesome.
I know not everyone is gonna feel that way. but i really didn't like most of those songs.
As long as Gem Drops doesn't touch the combat than I'm good lol. Just give SO3 some QoL and better visuals.
BEEN PLAYING THIS GAME SINCE IT CAME OIUT VERY ADDICTING
It's so insanely great!!
I honestly thought this game would, at best get a HD remaster of the PSP version. I would have never guessed Star Ocean 2 would get a remake of this level, yet it did. It genuinely shocks me that they put this much effort and love in to it. The remake is amazing and I love it.
It also makes me wonder what is up with Chrono Trigger. As much as I love SO2, I can admit that CT is a much MUCH more well known JRPG...Yet it has not got a remake or a port for modern consoles, and it's not even on Nintendo Online SNES app? What is up with that? Is there some kind of copyright issue? They still are doing Dragon Quest games so it's not like they have soured their relationship with Toriyama.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's in development.
As someone who is trying more and more to get into this series, and fighting Star Ocean 3's mindboggling game design out of genuine interest, I'm just gonna say it, I hope one day Star Ocean 3 gets a remake with this level of care
someday!
@@SolaceAndDread Hope so !
Can we please get so 3 the so 2 sequel AND MAYBE A 3D remake of 2 like they did trails of mana.
This game is making waves. Its honestly getting more prestige than ff16 (SEs big 2023 focus) and me personally it was meh.
Im 39 i played the og. But i never got past a very pivotal point. This remake blew me away, in every way, i judt csnt see it ending here no way.
there will be more SO! i think we're about to seem some real love infused into this series.
For JRPGs this year, I'm loving it more than Octopath Traveler 2 and FF16. I just love how broken you can make this game go. I remember how broken you could get in the original FF7 so I was sorely disappointed in how FF7R how was so limiting - could never truly feel powerful no matter how hard you grind.
Word! This remake completes the franchise resurrection after SO6. Excited for the other remakes and Star Ocean 7. Gemdrops is awesome!
we get blue sphere and I'm a happy man.
@@SolaceAndDreadyes! Imagine more Star Ocean spinoff games, like a 6-2 made in this style! I'd go out on a limb and say ALL future Star Oceans should consider this, even new mainline titles.
The only thing that meets my hype for this release, is/was the hype for SMRPG coming out tomorrow! (As of the time of this comment) What a great year it has been.
I agree with the soundtrack point, the new arrangements aren't always better. Sometimes the instrumentation doesn't feel the same or don't have the same pucnh.
Regarding the difficulty, well at the very least it makes the game a bit more accessible and more doable for newcomers instead of getting destroyed forever against the final boss ^^.
On that point, I'm glad they put the "Limiter Off" sidequest of the final boss in the post game now. I wasn't aware of what it was about before and told my brother to do Philia's quest in the PS1 version, and boy oh boy did I regret doing so. Without knowing the Bloody Armor trick, it was a game breaking challenge he couldn't undo so he never finished the game until the remake came out ^^.
First time I discovered it I only had Opera and Ernest 😂
I feel like I agree with every single thing in this review. Right down to the lack of difficulty for New Game+, lack of anything beyond Universe in general, and having a slightly hard time mentally pushing through the second time (and third for me, because I forgot to pick up Ashton in my first two playthroughs)
Look at it this way: you're practicing speed runs
the new Japanese dub is great and makes it a little newish for me i always played it in english
i still miss the OG menu sounds like in every SO game. otherwise its perfect... new game + should of let us pick and choice..
I should try the jp voices...
Lmao i like how your voice suddenly turned to a 15 year old's midway through the video. Is it the nostalgia bro? Heh.
😂
It’s good but idk maybe I’m older. Can’t deal with the wonky dialogue.
not all of it holds up well, lol.
I got the platinum trophy yesterday this game is so good!
congrats!
didnt get celine even on my 2nd run. but that thumbnail bruh... also can i pray thay square gives xenogearsR project to GEMDROPS please!
I absolutely agree, I enjoy the original arrangement more. It just works and has more oomph. Also I started new game plus and not really loving it??? I’m glad I get to keep all my items and weapons but it doesn’t make me excited to go through my journey again so I may just start a new game without the plus.
i did 2 separate saves simultaneously because it's just dumb, lol. my party killed unlimited gabe on universe. tf I'mma do fighting Alan?
New game plus sucks in general😂. Just super easy mode
Is this game perfect? no. There's a fair bit of dialogue that feels...wordy. I wish some of the items had their own unique models (rather than a copy/paste of another item). But this game does so many things very well. Huge variety of skills/items/weapons, QoL updates, item crafting, post game dungeon... Already finished my first playthough and will play my second (after Mario RPG) with the other protagonist.
Honestly, I used to love Star Ocean 2, but over the years, I've grown to despise human rehash races in fantasy media, and when your franchise centers primarily around narcissistic human rehash races that had no thought or creativity put into them, and exist just to pander to humanity's vanity, it gets frustrating and downright insufferable. "Oh, Expellians are just humans, but magical. Nedians are just humans, but with pointy ears. Leon's race is just a human with animal ears (which NEVER makes sense). Operah and Earnest are just humans with a third eye. The list goes on.
To make matters worse: this is EVERY FRICKEN CHARACTER IN THE FRANCHISE! The closest thing we ever got to a true non-human is the dude who could shapeshift into John Talbain with swirly glasses from the first game, and even then: it's just a shapeshifter. Plus, just like what seems like EVERY non-human playable in JRPGs, you have to fight him, first.
I know I complain about this a lot, but I would LOVE to see a space-time JRPG with some ACTUAL race designs. ...Too bad there really AREN'T any. Xenoblade 1 has Riki, but that's about it. Xenoblade 2 and 3 pulled the same crap Star Ocean does. Phantasy Star basically got rid of the Motavians in later games and replaced them with more human rehash races. Yes, I get the Motavians were basically just the Jawa and the Ewoks from Star Wars combined into one race, but it was still something DIFFERENT from the human rehashes we would later on in life see plague JRPGs.
Also, don't give me that "it's supposed to be relatable" crap. It's not relatable. It's narcissistic and lazy.
I have to disagree with your view on the difficulty:
The difficulty is greater than before, but it doesn't seem like it, for those of us who already know how to create the best equipment (how to break the game). This is possible to notice since all monsters and bosses were balanced much more according to the part of the game - some bosses with 2~10x more HP, in addition to increased attack, defense, etc.
Regarding the music, it's more a matter of taste. I only played with the new version, from start to finish, and ended up getting used to it. It's as if it were the original.
For me, this is by far the best remake of any existing game ever created - it respects the original by keeping certain things, but also adds an air of newness. And my God, what delicious gameplay during the battle.
I dont know man. I genuinely do not feel it's more difficult having played all 3 very recently. Like every review kinda said the same. I killed unlimited Gabe at 152 on universe and never setting foot inside the maze because bloody armors got buffed. The assists too... It's just so much easier.
@@SolaceAndDread bruh... bloody armor? really? I'm sorry but bloody armor (and helm) is basically a cheat code. You judging the game's difficulty based on that is like saying it's too easy because you can use cheat engine to get god mode.... My one disappointment with this remake is they didn't remove bloody armor ;p
Hopefully they add a harder difficulty in a surprise update, but what are the odds
slim-to-none
this game was so so so so pretty
I'm so happy ppl are enjoying this great game in 2023
I still haven't made it to NG+, but I can definitely see what you're saying. I was expecting enemies and bosses to scale a bit, so it feels like a missed opportunity. Though I'm still very much appreciative of the fact of not having to grind all the way to 255 again and doing a glorious victory lap. Surely this time I'll beat that bastard Dias, right? Right...?
Wholeheartedly agree on the rearrangements. Can't say how much of this is my ears being hostage to nostalgia, but I do prefer the original compositions. As for the game being super exploitable, I politely disagree because even the original was almost as exploitable. The only real difference is that things are more streamlined now and you get some extra rewards from the mission tab and some extra bonus stats from the party formation. The assault actions feel out of place though, it's a completely superfluous system that doesn't add a whole lot to the game. Also, the dodge mechanic is similarly ignorable, the core gameplay isn't built with it in mind.
Other than some rather minor nitpicks, I have to say that this is a splendid remake. I'm having so much fun with it it's kind of unreal, this old JRPG still feels remarkably fresh. As an old veteran of SO2, I can confidently state that this is the definitive version of the game. I was never in love with the S02SE dub, but the original Japanese dub which I wasn't familiar with sounds energetic and fun. They also went above and beyond with the visuals; at first I was kind of dreading the idea of just being a Unity asset store flip, but no, even the sprits were updated with charming idle animations. I've noticed some bugs here and there, but nothing that ruins the experience, especially considering how many times the original PSX version ruined my saves.
Loved your video, brother. Though I have to ask why you used so much footage of my girl Welch being demolished over and over in the CoT? That made me laugh heartedly.
Apologies for the long post, but I'm extremely enthusiastic for this game and I feel that you love this game just as much as I do. Keep doing your best, brother, and may the Lord bless you and your wife.
I loved this, no need to apologize for the long post. I will say I was gathering the B-roll for this while streaming and I wanted to show fighting with a solo fighter and i kept losing and it was a point of pride to take them out with her lol. arguably the hardest fight in the game for me.
I also agree that volume sliders are a great feature. I tend to raise voice volume and lower background music
i like to shut music off completely sometimes. Nintendo loves leaving the volume stuff out of their games, drives me nuts.
Awesome game and cosplay 👍 for you
I'm not gonna pillory you for saying otherwise, but I simply cannot disagree more with your assessment of the music. I think the music is great. It is absolutely my jam. It just isn't yours. And that's fine!
I would say I like about 30% of the music more. But some of it... Yuck. But that's why they gave us both!
The Welchs deaths were even better the second time around. 😂😂😂😂
She's a champion with a heart of gold
This nerd. I DEMAND A RECOUNT THIS IS BIAS
👀👀
Mine just came in today, I'm currently playing another game, but it's calling my name bad haha
The other game can wait 👀
What is it btw
@@SolaceAndDread my time at sandrock.
Great❤game but its too far to be the best jrpg of all time
Best "remake"
@@SolaceAndDread yah maybe is the best of star ocean franchise I really enjoyed it,I hope this will open the door for other remake such as chrono triger and dragon quest
I'd love to hear what you think is a better done remake. (Seriously it's for video purposes) not GAME, specifically the remake of the game. (Not a port or remaster)
Best remake I've played.
I think every other remake will try to emulate this.
@@SolaceAndDread lets hope so!
