Drove it to 130k miles. Can't wait to see you guys take this off-road!
I ALMOST purchased a nice Touareg with air suspension and the rear diff lock a month ago. A guy beat me to it by 10 minutes and said he got it because of TFL. Initially I was a bit bummed. My wife consoled me and said it just wasn’t meant to be. I instead started looking at LR3’S and found a great one close by and purchased it. While mine does not have the rear differential lock, the center diff lock, terrain selector and traction control should be sufficient. My wife's LR3 is far more capable (1.5"' lift and bigger tires) in far more types of terrain than any D2 we've wheeled with except for major rock crawling. And even then, the guys at Lucky8 have shown you can really push an LR3 to the limit.
Tommy started off saying how the Discovery 2 was very reliable.i.e. “It has never failed.” At the end, LR2 is not dependable and LR3 is wonderful and dependable.
Well my wife has a 2016 LR4 HSE and I love it!! Totally paid for too and only $36k used with 9k miles....like new in excellent condition. You will love the LR3. Great V8 too. We have had 2 over the last 15 years and both were great and reliable.
I'm actually looking forward to hearing how this goes! I myself am buying a financial mistake in a disco 2. Wanting something fun for off road/winter. Love the way your disco 2 looks and can't wait to see the new lr3 all done up
I'd take the D2 with the lockers over that LR3 any day....The D2's issues could easily be fixed for less than what they paid for that LR3 that most likely has similar problems lurking under the hood.
I have a 04 d2 and an 08 lr3 I love both with equal passion. The lr3 is awesome, but 2 pieces of advice. 1 don't touch the parking brake. 2 keep the air suspension. They are mountain goats off road with air, and you loose a bit with the coil swaps. Mine has 226k miles and is still on air. Also great job and I look forward to a comparison video.
Preventative maintenance is key with LR3's.. Ours is at 165k and the only thing that's been replaced outside of the regular wear items like pads and rotors are the control arm bushings.
Haha, once the Land Rover bug bites you're hooked. Even if you live in the USA. The Disco 2 chassis dates back to 1970 with the Range Rover Classic. Keep up good work guys from Down Under (Australia) and so far I have had a D1 (1997) D2 (2000) and 7 classic Range Rovers
I've got to believe the solid front axle and lack of an air suspension would make the Disco 2 better off road than the 3. I'm anxiously awaiting a video of the comparison of these two vehicles off road!
Certainly does. The air suspension crap is just that, crap, its expensive when it fails, and its not that great. Solid axles are the way to go, that independent suspension is an alignment nightmare forever especially if driven offroad.
I was going to cry when you said you were selling the D2.... up until I saw the unique front seat hangs of the LR3. I’ve got an ‘08 and even with the V6 is a really nice truck. I’ve had it for 4 years, it has 115,000 miles and I haven’t had any reliability surprises. I know you’ll enjoy it and I can’t wait to see it go up all the Colorado trails.
D2 is unique; has a lot more character and classiness. Also D2 represents a time of old school off-roading. The money would have been better spent doing an engine swap and some tech upgrades. The vehicle is endlessly upgradable. Also going to miss seeing vehicles compared to her since she kinda represents all older SUVs.
I love those discos, and the fact they had the badging to match. Can't wait to see this hit the tfl trails. You guys are working with a Full fleet of fun vechiles to test this winter it looks like!
I went from a Disco II to an LR3 a year ago and thought that I'd be nothing but disappointed... I frigging' love this thing! I spend my life off road and I have not met an obstacle other than a washed out bridge that has stopped this thing.
I have a range rover sport and I love it when you guys talk about land rovers (even if its not always positive). Looking forward to seeing this thing go offroad!
omg Ive been waiting for this! Got my Disco 3 as a first car and bought a LR4 one year later. Sold the 4 and still own two 3s now. Best combination to go on and off-road. No problem with reliability if serviced correctly. Owned mine for 4 years now without any major problems, never broke down.
I bought my land rover the same time you guys bought yours but I wrecked mine three months later so I've been vicariously living through these disco videos
Ive owned several D2's and an LR3 - LR3 definitely a more solid and reliable choice. Original air suspension on mine was still working at 140,000 miles with exception of leaky front air block (same as in video) that needed replaced right before I sold it. Have fun guys!
Same, I've got 195,000 miles on my 06 Lr3 and I've replaced the air struts around 160,000 miles but that's normal with any struts, and air struts are cheaper than normal struts, like delphi. I definitely enjoy my lr3.
@@mubarakabdelsalam1186 I did the work myself. There's only two things I can't do because I lack the machinery: Milling and valve stem seals. But come on what car or truck doesn't. Hopefully few yrs will get D4. Hope you have fun.👍 Jason. BOSTON. UK.
I have the 04 Disco 2 and LR3. Love them both for different reasons. LR3 is much easier to drive but that Disco 2 goes through anything and your body pays for it. The air suspension on the LR3 is SWEET and I can take it to Church on Sunday and look special.
Great choice guys. Perfect blend of luxury and off road capabilities. A set of all terrain 32’s and the traction control will take you just about anywhere you want to go.
I'm looking forward to this series of videos (it'll be a short series, but I like comedies 😁). I used to want one, when I couldn't afford one. They do drive nicely and can do what it says on the tin. But... now I could easily go and buy one or an early D4, I wouldn't. In the last years I've learned what goes wrong. In fact they've never made one that didn't. Or, to put it another way, they have a 100% failure rate. I do have a D1 that I've heavily modified and, a Honda, for reliability. Some of the things you can look forward to... Air bags (regular issues), air compressor, electric parking brake.... Really bad. Regular siezing and subsequent motor failure if you don't attend to it quick enough. New cables/ gears/motor end points etc are a pain to install and set up if you don't know how. Front lower control arm bushes and rear upper control arm bushes last about 18 months if its in daily use. Various electrical woes. Heavy on brakes pads and rotors. Here in the UK, there are hardly any petrol, I mean gas, engines. The timing belt service on the diesels is difficult for the home mechanic and expensive at a dealer. Officially, its a body off job so it's easier to get to the injection pump belt at the back of the engine at the same time as doing the timing belt. Some say they can do it without lifting the body. I've never done one, personally. Egr valves on diesels (2 of) soot up every 18 to 24 months, particularly if it's in daily use but driven conservatively. Diesels need to be thrashed sometimes, sorry, I mean "driven" 😆. The newer crop of Landrovers with the pop up gear shift module are having failures here too. I've seen this personally. (I know you don't have that one, but just a word of warning). It's about a 400 quid fix and usually just swap out the complete module, but when it fails, the transmission goes into park. So learn where the emergency release into neutral is or you can't tow it out of the way, if you're daft enough to ever get one of those. I could go on. But I'll just leave you with this true story. There's an independent mechanic round here who specialises in Landrovers. He has a good reputation. But even he is sick of diagnosing and messing about with D3 - onwards vehicles so has started turning people away in favour of servicing Defenders. Good luck boys.
Always one minute away from a catastrophic failure. Love that phrase! Pretty much applies to every car I've ever owned in 42 years of driving though ironically that has only happened once to me.
You will enjoy it. I moved from a Discovery 2 to a Discovery 4 and love it. Super capable off road but soooo much nicer on the road as well. Rock sliders, long range fuel tank and bigger tyres. Great touring car here in Australia.
So you were worried about LR reliability...so you got one with more electronics, a complicated air suspension and computer controlled everything. Okay?
So funny. I just sold my WJ and Bought an LR3. Funny to watch you guys discover the new ride just like I did. Long story short, it completely doesn't even compare to the lifted WJ in any way, shape or form off road. However, it does drive unbelievably well on road. Enjoy the new ride. I look forward to seeing your perspective on it. Mine is now for sale and I am going to get back into a Jeep. I did the Atlantic British Coil Spring conversion/ 2" OME lift and it drives as well as stock, but without the failure prone air suspension. I also did Poly lower control arm bushings.
@@takiman1 They're fun, throw a lift, bigger tires and some engine components to wake them up and they'll go anywhere. My 07 v8 is a beast and gets complimented everywhere. Quick reliable and go anywhere fun. Guess I'm alone
For the sake of scientific off-road research I’m happy you made this decision. I was in the market for a LR3 but ultimately decided the upkeep and the litany of problems they developed wasn’t for me. Nice rigs but certainly money pits!
I'm glad you guy decided to try out one of these since you picked up the smaller but still good VW.. I run my trucks on average from around age 10 to around age 20 when I decide to move onto the next. My last move, believe it or not, was from a 96 triple locked, full bumpers etc, you name it 80 series Land Cruiser, to an 08 LR3 HSE with the rear diff lock and basically every option except the headrest mounted TV screens for the rear passengers. I've now owned it for 3 years, and besides having to fix the few issues the PO decided to skip on because he was selling it off, it's been absolutely dead reliable now for 40k mi. And I mean a HARD 40k. I service and replace wear items (they love to eat tie rod ends and lower control arm bushings, as well as the center bearing on the drive shaft, not to mention brakes if you use it off road a lot because traction control.. This applies to basically all new 4x4's now) but it's never had any unplanned issues. Everything happens kinda where I figure it'll need replaced, so I'll shop around n' get whatever I need and just keep hold of it until I actually need to fix. I've had this thing camping in 114º heat in the California deserts, I've had it in snow nearly up to the door handles in frigid midwest winters (I run BFG KO-2s on 18" steel wheels I bought from Lucky8.com) The thing is just an animal. It'll go almost anywhere you'd wanna go, and probably only a 2 door Wrangler Rubicon could do better in most terrain as far as mostly standard vehicles go. And it simply eats up the miles and weirdly, gets decent fuel economy for a 3 ton monster, MUCH better than my old 80. You'd be fooled into thinking you were driving a BMW or something on the road if you were blindfolded it's that good. (Don't try this at home!) My 2 biggest selling points of the LR3 over buying a 100 series which I considered, was the versatility of the back, since the seats all fold flat into the floor, and you can't use the 3rd row for actual humans in a Land Cruiser for more than a few blocks.. And 2nd? The price. I could have bought my LR3 and lost it and bought another one, and still been money ahead vs what it'd have cost me to buy 1 LC 100 series in similar condition/miles. Toyota tax is real!!
Weve had a Disco 2 in the family for 11 years and its only left us stranded one time in the last 11 years. Love our disco to death and wouldn't trade it for the world. Had an lr3 in the mix for a while and got rid of the car due to issues it had about a year after we got it.
Not specifically to this video but since I was looking for a hd truck in 2017 been watching your videos, great reviews great staff, love seeing Andre, Nathan, Roman and also quite the fan of Kent! Thanks for great videos Kevin in Alberta

From a Land Rover Owner Welcome to Disney. I want to see that Baby in his Office. My Friend from TFL nice move and please take out those Rhino lift and used those only for off roading not for daily basis because stressed the suspension . My truck run with stock suspension and is enough for the office mean Jungle. I used 265/65 AT ....
So when is the Touareg, land rover(s), samurai, hummer, and wrangler showdown? Take them all on a couple famous Colorado trails and see how many come home! I love these old suv purchases. Going back over suvs always gives you a very different perspective 20 years later!edit : forgot to add land cruiser!
Awesome! The LR3/4 is (was?) my dream car to get. I eventually bought a Land Cruiser 100 series instead, because it was impossible to find a good enough LR3 on the market here where I live. I know it has it's flaws and weak points, but man everytime I see one my heart still skips a beat.
If that air suspension fails you, I'm told there are real suspension replacements that remove the weak points. Then you'll just have to worry about the electronics...
Congratulations! First thing you have to do is buy a GAP IID Tool (Lucky 8 sells them in the US for around 500$). It is essential for the LR3! Google it. There is even a dedicate Facebook group on the IID Tool. Then you can buy a cheap key from ebay and program it with the IID tool. With the IID tool you can also play with the air suspension as you wish, upgrade the software, read fault codes and delete them, etc, etc. A fellow Disco 3 owner :) PS: mine is a 2005 and has 100k miles now. Except for the compressor, all the air suspension is original. Not bad for something that everybody that doesn't own one complains about. PS2: Your low pitch horn is dead. Only your high pitch one is working. Mine failed as well recently. Feel free to write me if you ever have any questions. I did my homework for years before taking the plunge and buying one a bit more than two years ago.
Great buy!!! I've been looking for an LR4 to purchase so seeing you guys test your LR3 will help me decide if I want to buy a Land Rover product. I've always been weary about air suspensions and I heard LR is a nightmare to deal with. We'll see!
love it!!! i spend half my life in New Zealand with my disco 1 that i will never sell. and the other half of my life in Canada, would love a disco 3 or 4 here to replace the old xterra. This will be a great series.
Excited to see reliability with you guys! I had a Disco2 and it was amazing off road but my bank hated it. Looking at the LR3 or LR4 later on down the road.
Awesome! I love it. I sold my v8 2005 with new air suspension for $4200 no reserve on eBay. Guy drove from NY to GA straight and turned around and drove it right back. I sold it cheap because it had a weird transmission warning that we never could trace down. Also at cruising speed it surged. Non stop. Non stop. Rrrr rrrr rrrr rrrr
Right now I think you have the some of the most interesting off road vehicles! This disco, the land cruiser and of course the Touareg! Please do a video comparison with all three! I think another great for off road and yet misunderstood and extremely cheap vehicle is the Liberty KK, you could have a look at one of these if you ever wanna mix up you fleet!
You guys know why the LR3 was unibody & body-on-frame? That platform was called T5, because it was supposed to spawn 5 separate cars. We saw 2, L319 (LR/Disco 3 and 4) and L320 (RRS). But there was supposed to be 3 more that were going to be a 90, 110 and 130. This was originally supposed to replace the Defender! But Ford and Land Rover couldn't agree on what a Defender should be. Land Rover wanted to make a more capable LR3, raisin it, with a modular while retaining the independent suspension. Ford wanted it to be a live axle truck with a singular focus, like the Ranger Raptor is today. It ended up being shelved due to lack of leadership and direction. EDIT: Land Rover got the chassis from Ford, who had designed it to replace the Explorer but decided it to sophisticated and expensive.
Loving every video since I subscribed

Get the Old Man Emu coil conversion and never worry about the air parts ever again! And, it gives you a couple inches of lift or more.
I had an 2008, it was very solid..until about 125-130k. Then every time I turned around a pretty major repair. Tread lightly gents:)
Can we get an on road/off road showdown between the two before you sell the disco 2?
They mentioned that at the end of this video
Replaced one steaming pile with a newer steaming pile, good job TFL 👍🏼
Lol! Some people will never understand and thats fine.
At least the last one was actually good off road with the solid axles. This new one will have #noflex off road
I owned an LR3 for 10 years and had no problems. Miss it.
Joe now this is what I call fake news!
@@wildbill23c Amen! And let's not forget the air suspension failing WHILE YOU'RE ON THE TRAIL. #ifsforthelose
Best decision TFL ever made!! Had one for 4 years while living in Colorado. It will not let you down!!
Just 2 months prior to this video, Tom was singing the high praises for the Disco 2. It was the best ever! What a switch, Tom! LOL
I really like that you guys buy unorthodox off-road vehicles.
The videos with them are very entertaining!
I'll buy the Disco 2 if you sell it. And I'm not joking. Ask for my email if interested!
Bravo guys! I love the LR3! Im a Toyota guy, but these have always peaked my interest! Love the box design
Piqued, i think it’s French for Sting like a bee sting.
Sounds good...
Could you please give the shop name where you bought the original air suspension.
@@mubarakabdelsalam1186 I did the work myself. There's only two things I can't do because I lack the machinery: Milling and valve stem seals. Everything else I can do, i can diagnose, reprogram, or replace. By the way the site I bought mine from was Atlantic British (www.roverparts.com/Parts/RNB501580) now i could've gotten cheaper bilstein ones from rock auto for 288.79 each but I chose to go with Delphi since they're the original manufacturer. www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/land+rover,2006,lr3,4.4l+v8,1432799,suspension,strut,7584
The Disco 2 has way more character and good looks than the LR3. I wouldn't make that swap, both are going to need parts anyhow.
Hi guys. I have had D1.3.9 i. Auto. A D2 td5 manual. Now have D3 2.7 tdv6 auto hse.
Loved them all.been driving land rovers for 15 yrs.would not change to anything else. Yes all have had issues. But come on what car or truck doesn't. Hopefully few yrs will get D4.
Hope you have fun.👍
Jason. BOSTON. UK.
Welcome to my world! LR 3 driver! Upgrading to the LR 4 though soon it seems! Enjoy, 😀
Looks exactly like the 06 I had. They ride so smooth and do really well offroad
Oh man, you replaced it with something worse...
LR3 vs TOUGH TOUREG . . .
BRING IT ! ! !
Nail-biting anticipation !!!!!
Love it! I’ve had 3 LR3’s! Now I have an LR4, Disco 2, and Range Rover L322 .
You will love the LR3. We have had our 2009 for about a year and several road trips later we just love it. It is a perfect all around vehicle.
so awesome as a D4 guy cant wait for you guys to put it through its paces, smart choice!
What do you do when your Landover falls apart?
Tfl: get another one!!!
4 R U N N E R. Reliable and highly customizable.
It's true.
@I know you are right, And I just got owned but: after 3 million miles
True, but so boring and predictable.
The prices are so crazy on used 4Runners now that their unreliable competition now represent a better deal.
I'd like to see you guys go with a land cruiser
Weve had a Disco 2 in the family for 11 years and its only left us stranded one time in the last 11 years. Love our disco to death and wouldn't trade it for the world. Had an lr3 in the mix for a while and got rid of the car due to issues it had about a year after we got it.
Not specifically to this video but since I was looking for a hd truck in 2017 been watching your videos, great reviews great staff, love seeing Andre, Nathan, Roman and also quite the fan of Kent! Thanks for great videos
Kevin in Alberta
Awesome choice, I have the same year with 150k on it and I absolutely love it.
Same, only mine had 195k on it. Its actually the first vehicle I've owned that hasn't rusted out up here in the rust belt on my farm.
Have fun with your new land rover guys. I wont watch any of these videos on your replacement for your land rover discovery 2. If you would have bought lets say a 2nd Gen dodge durango or maybe even a expedition or heck maybe a mitsubishi montero i would watch every video but after you are done with this series for your new land rover lr3 ill be filled with joy.
Great to see you guys back in another Landrover, Discovery 3 is surprisingly good off road
Awesome! Everyone is going to complain how unreliable it is. I’m planning on buying a use Discovery/Range Rover myself. Best of luck
I love how good the interior looks in these land rovers
Not really a LR fan but I've enjoyed the Disco 2 series a lot. I think this LR3 will be just as interesting.
Still no FJ? Maybe one day
Beowulf Grendel ikr I’m still waiting lol
They would rather buy 💩
Nissan y60
why would any1 waste money on a shit box toy ota - nut cases.
Tommy your on-camera presence is top notch! Were you born in a studio? But seriously great job keeping the subject material rolling and effortlessly Vanna-whiting this cool LR3.
From a Land Rover Owner
Welcome to Disney.
I want to see that Baby in his Office.
My Friend from TFL nice move and please take out those Rhino lift and used those only for off roading not for daily basis because stressed the suspension .
My truck run with stock suspension and is enough for the office mean Jungle.
I used 265/65 AT ....
May this purchase bring you all the joy and views you had with the LRD. Best of luck.
I love the LR3!!!! My dad had one, it was such a fun car to drive!!! Went to land rover experience and it was epic off road!
The Range Rover L322 (2002) was really the 'transition' point for Land Rover, with the Discovery 3 really being heavily based on it.
We had a Disc2 for years then got a 3 and love it. Will never replace the 3.best motor ever
Love LR3s as well!! I’m also loving the Land Rover love...its a love fest! LOL!
Bet you love replacing the rear hubs every 30k too. 😂🤣😂. Just wait till the whole rear end goes out and 8k down the drain.
hoodmobbin ok clown, whatever you say clown.
A fellow Disco 3 owner :)
PS: mine is a 2005 and has 100k miles now.
Thats the problem with landrovers in the US. It gets way to expensive to maintain...nevermind offroad!🇬🇧
Your skill on Craigslist is unparalleled.
I would love to see you get 2017-2019Honda Ridgeline lifted traxx lift kit, some Micky Thompson, hondata chip and do what you guys do.
Love this video...but where is the updated video showing more details about the lr3
Can't wait to see it against your Touareg!!!
Wasn't much of a Touareg fan until TFL got theirs and did the offroad videos I was impressed where it would go.
You'll love your LR3! I love mine;)
Pull the headliner and rhino line it. I did. Looks better than factory.
Nice!! Looking forward to the off-road segment.
Cant wait for the next LR3 video! Nice work!!!
Saw the notification of new video about new vehicle.
Started to watch video.
Got to LR3.
Went to watch a different video....
